Serrasalmus scotopterus was described by the Scottish naturalist William Jardine in 1841, one of the earlier names applied within the large and taxonomically difficult genus Serrasalmus. It belongs to the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, alongside true piranhas such as Pygocentrus and dozens of other Serrasalmus species that are notoriously hard to tell apart on external characters alone.
FishBase currently flags S. scotopterus as a species inquirenda, meaning its status as a valid, distinct species is unresolved rather than settled; species-level taxonomy across Serrasalmus has been repeatedly revised as researchers work through look-alike forms collected across the Amazon basin. Because of this uncertainty, no common or trade name is firmly attached to the species, and it should not be assumed identical to superficially similar Serrasalmus offered in the aquarium trade under other names.
