Curimatidae as a whole has been subject to repeated revision as researchers untangle superficially similar small silvery species, and Steindachnerina in particular contains a number of look-alike forms distinguished mainly by meristic counts and subtle morphometrics — a caution worth keeping in mind, since field identification to species level within the genus is not straightforward.
