Taxonomy & naming
Brycon hilarii was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1850. It belongs to the family Bryconidae, one of several lineages split out of the old, broadly defined "Characidae" as characin systematics have been revised; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Bryconidae as the current family home for Brycon and its relatives, distinct from the pacus and silver dollars of Serrasalmidae and from the true tetras of Characidae proper. Older aquarium and fisheries literature sometimes still lists the species under Characidae, a holdover from before the split rather than a live taxonomic dispute.
The genus Brycon is large and Neotropical, encompassing dozens of species often called "characin salmons" or, in Brazil, matrinxã and piraputanga, names that also get applied loosely to several related species and can cause confusion in both the fish trade and fisheries records. Brycon hilarii is most reliably distinguished from its relatives by a combination of body proportions, fin colouration and its restricted range within the Paraguay River basin; positive field identification of Brycon species generally requires comparison against regional keys rather than colouration alone.
Morphology
Brycon hilarii has the classic silhouette of its genus: a moderately deep, laterally compressed, fusiform body built for sustained fast swimming rather than the disc-like shape of a pacu or silver dollar. FishBase records a maximum length of 22 in total length and a maximum recorded weight of 3.4 kg, making this one of the larger characins kept in the hobby at all — a genuinely big fish, not a scaled-up tetra.
Colouration is silvery overall, brightening to a burnished, almost golden sheen along the flanks in good condition, with the caudal fin showing the reddish tinge referenced in the Spanish common name "sábalo cola roja" (red-tailed sábalo). The mouth is terminal and set with a full complement of characin dentition suited to an omnivorous, fruit-and-invertebrate diet rather than the specialised piranha's shearing bite. Fins are unremarkable in shape but the overall build — a heavy-bodied, strong-tailed fish — signals a species adapted to holding position and accelerating hard in current.
Habitat
The species is native to the Paraguay River basin of South America, and it is particularly well documented from the clear, spring-fed rivers of the Serra da Bodoquena National Park in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, where visibility can exceed many metres and shoals of piraputanga are a signature sight for divers and snorkellers. Within the basin it inhabits flowing river channels rather than still backwaters, consistent with its build as an active, current-adapted swimmer.

Temperament is described as peaceful for its size — it is not a fin-nipper or a predator in the piranha sense — but its sheer bulk and vigorous swimming still make it unsuitable for most tankmates, which risk being outcompeted for food, stressed by its activity, or simply outgrown. It is an eager feeder that will take pellets, flake and vegetable matter readily, which makes husbandry straightforward once the space requirement is met; the space requirement, not feeding, is the real barrier to keeping this species. As with any large, long-lived river fish, it should never be acquired without a firm plan for its adult size and never released into local waterways if it outgrows its accommodation.
Conservation
