Taxonomy & naming

Leporinus macrocephalus was described by Garavello & Britski in 1988, with its type locality in the Rio Cuiabá at Barão de Melgaço, Mato Grosso, Brazil. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family named for the anus-like appearance of the mouth in some genera and better known in the hobby for the oblique, head-down grazing posture many of its members adopt.

A major taxonomic revision by Ramirez et al. (2017) split the old, unwieldy genus Leporinus and moved a large clade of species — including this one — into the newly erected genus Megaleporinus, so current authorities such as FishBase, GBIF and iNaturalist list the species as Megaleporinus macrocephalus. This article retains the classical combination Leporinus macrocephalus for consistency with the site's genus grouping, but readers researching the species elsewhere should expect to find it under Megaleporinus. The common name "piauçu" (also spelled piavussu) is Brazilian Portuguese, derived from the Tupi word for a related group of large characins.

Morphology

The piauçu has the classic anostomid build: an elongated, moderately compressed, torpedo-shaped body with a small subterminal mouth well suited to grazing rather than grabbing prey. The flanks are silvery, typically marked with faint dark bars or blotches that can intensify or fade with mood and background, and the fins are usually clear to dusky rather than brightly coloured.
