Steindachnerina fasciata was described by Richard P. Vari and Jacques Géry in 1985 as part of a taxonomic review of Steindachnerina species from the Rio Tapajós drainage. It belongs to the family Curimatidae — small, toothless, deep-river and floodplain detritivores — within the order Characiformes, distinct from the predatory piranhas (Serrasalmidae) and the migratory Prochilodus/Semaprochilodus flannelmouths that share this atlas grouping. The genus Steindachnerina itself, named for the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner, currently holds roughly twenty valid species of small Neotropical detritivores, most poorly known outside their original taxonomic descriptions.
Within the genus, S. fasciata was distinguished from its close congener Steindachnerina seriata primarily by differences in body stripe and pigmentation pattern, a common way of separating otherwise very similar curimatids.
