Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1910 as Leporinus latofasciatus, based on material from the Orinoco River in Venezuela. In 2011 a taxonomic revision (published in Zootaxa) moved it into its own new genus, Synaptolaemus, distinguishing it from Leporinus by, among other characters, distinctive teeth at the symphysis of the lower jaw that are roughly twice as long as they are wide. Synaptolaemus cingulatus Myers & Fernández-Yépez, 1950 is a junior synonym of the same species.
Synaptolaemus latofasciatus belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family whose members are named for their habit of orienting the body obliquely, head toward the substrate, while browsing. The genus is currently recognised as monotypic: this is the only described species placed in Synaptolaemus, which sets it apart from the far larger, multi-species genera Leporinus and Anostomus that dominate the same family.
Morphology
Synaptolaemus latofasciatus is a small, elongate, laterally compressed anostomid reaching a maximum recorded size of about 3.5 in standard length, with some aquarium sources citing total lengths up to around 4–4.5 in. The body carries the family's characteristic pointed snout and small, forward-set mouth adapted for grazing rather than grasping, along with the diagnostic elongated symphyseal teeth on the lower jaw that separate the genus from Leporinus.
The common name "red-banded headstander" describes its pattern: broad, alternating transverse bands of orange-to-yellow and dark brown-to-black run across the flanks, giving the fish a strongly striped, almost flag-like appearance quite distinct from the more uniform silvery colouring of many of its relatives. As in other anostomids, the fish habitually holds itself at a steep, head-down angle in the water column, a posture connected to its grazing feeding style rather than to distress.
Habitat
The species is native to South America, with a type locality in the Orinoco River, Venezuela, and a confirmed range extending through the Orinoco and Casiquiare systems into the Amazon basin, including the Rio Negro, the Rio Tapajós drainage and the upper Rio Xingu, as well as records from the Rio Ventuari and Rio Iriri. It is generally considered an eastern Amazon and Orinoco basin species, with occurrence records from Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil, and it may be more widely distributed than currently documented since it is easily overlooked among similar-looking anostomids.
FishBase gives a tolerated water temperature range of roughly 68–82 °F and a pH range of 5.0–7.5, with hardness in the range of 36–215 ppm — a broad envelope consistent with the varied blackwater, clearwater and whitewater tributaries across its range rather than a single narrow habitat type. It is typically found grazing over submerged wood, rock and sediment in flowing or slow-moving river habitat.
Feeding
Synaptolaemus latofasciatus is a grazing omnivore, feeding on algae, detritus and biofilm (aufwuchs) that it picks from submerged wood, rock and sediment, along with small invertebrates encountered while browsing. Its forward, slightly underslung mouth and head-down feeding posture are well suited to working close to the substrate rather than pursuing prey in open water.
In the aquarium it should be offered a diet weighted toward vegetable matter — algae wafers, blanched vegetables and quality herbivore-leaning flake or pellet foods — supplemented with occasional small live or frozen invertebrate foods rather than a high-protein carnivore diet. A sandy or fine substrate and driftwood or rockwork with natural algal growth let the fish express its normal grazing behaviour.
Mating
Very little is documented about courtship behaviour in Synaptolaemus latofasciatus specifically. Data on this monotypic species is sparse, and no detailed account of pairing, courtship display or spawning behaviour appears in the available literature or aquarium sources. External sexual dimorphism is not documented for the species.
Breeding
As with most headstanders, Synaptolaemus latofasciatus is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, releasing eggs over vegetation or fine substrate with no parental care, in line with the breeding pattern documented for related Leporinus and Anostomus species. However, this has not been directly confirmed for this species, and there are no verifiable captive-breeding records for it.
It should be treated, honestly, as a species that is not currently bred in the hobby. Aquarium stock is understood to derive from wild collection rather than commercial or hobbyist propagation, and anyone acquiring this fish should not expect breeding success.
In the aquarium
Synaptolaemus latofasciatus is a modestly sized fish — under 4 in — that suits a smaller setup than many of its Leporinus and Anostomus relatives, some of which grow much larger and are notorious fin-nippers. FishBase suggests a minimum tank size around 40 US gallons (roughly 70 US gal) with a sandy substrate, driftwood and rockwork that can support natural algal growth for grazing.
Water should be kept in the warm, soft-to-neutral range the species tolerates in the wild — roughly 68–82 °F and pH 5.0–7.5 — with good filtration and reasonably clean water typical of flowing Amazonian and Orinoco habitats. It is a peaceful grazer rather than an aggressive or predatory fish, and should do well with other calm community tankmates of similar water requirements; its main care requirement is ongoing access to algae and biofilm or a suitable vegetable-forward diet rather than any special aggression management.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Synaptolaemus latofasciatus as Least Concern (2022 assessment), reflecting its wide distribution across the Orinoco and Amazon basins and the likelihood that its true range is even broader than currently documented, since the species is easily overlooked or confused with similar anostomids.
No major species-specific threats are documented. As with other fish across its range, the general pressures facing Amazonian and Orinoco freshwater habitats — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation and water-quality change — are long-term watch items rather than an indication of current population decline.
