One of the earliest-described species in a genus that now numbers over 70 valid names, Ancistrus gymnorhynchus has accumulated a string of synonyms reflecting the confusion that plagued early loricariid taxonomy. Found in Venezuelan coastal drainages and the Orinoco basin, it is a modestly sized bristlenose whose males wear the genus's trademark branched snout tentacles.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus gymnorhynchus was described by Rudolf Kner in 1854 from material collected at Puerto Cabello, on Venezuela's Caribbean coast — making it one of the earliest formal descriptions in the genus Ancistrus, itself erected by Kner in the same landmark monograph on South American loricariids. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises A. gymnorhynchus Kner, 1854 as a valid species.

The species has accumulated a substantial synonymy, reflecting the tendency of nineteenth-century ichthyologists to describe the same species repeatedly under different generic placements: Xenocara gymnorhynchus (the combination under an early generic revision), Hypostomus karstenii, Lasiancistrus nationi, and Ancistrus rothschildi are all currently treated as junior synonyms.

The species epithet gymnorhynchus derives from the Greek gymnos (naked, bare) and rhynkhos (snout) — an allusion to the naked, unscaled rostral region that characterises this and related Ancistrus. The genus name Ancistrus refers to the hook-like interopercular spines (from the Greek ankistron, fish-hook), a shared feature of all members of the genus.

Morphology

Ancistrus gymnorhynchus reaches a maximum standard length of 5.5 in (SL). The body follows standard loricariid form: dorsoventrally flattened, encased in bony scutes, with a ventral sucking mouth, large pectoral spines, and an erectile first dorsal spine. Overall colouration is typically dark brown to grey-brown with a faint pale spotting pattern, though exact colour descriptions vary with collection locality and condition.

The defining visual feature of the genus is the fleshy, branched tentacles (sometimes called bushy growths or bristles) on the snout of adult males. In A. gymnorhynchus, as in other Ancistrus, these tentacles are soft dermal outgrowths that proliferate and branch with age; fully mature males can bear an impressive fan of tentacles extending across the rostral region and along the interopercular margins. These structures are absent or barely represented in females, which may develop only small, unbranched marginal growths at the snout edge.

The rostral area itself — the 'naked snout' implied by gymnorhynchus — is unarmoured, lacking the scutes that plate the rest of the head, a characteristic shared across the genus.

Habitat

Ancistrus gymnorhynchus is distributed across two distinct Venezuelan drainages: the Orinoco basin and the coastal rivers draining directly to the Caribbean. The type locality at Puerto Cabello places the original material in the Caribbean coastal system, while records from the Orinoco basin indicate a broader range spanning the country's major river network.

Ancistrus species in Venezuela typically inhabit clear to lightly turbid streams and rivers with rocky or woody substrates, where the ventral mouth and pectoral-fin grip allow them to hold station against current and graze surface biofilm. Water temperatures in Venezuelan lowland rivers generally fall between 24 and 81 °F; the species is recorded at these temperatures in hobbyist documentation.

Detailed ecological survey data specifically for A. gymnorhynchus at confirmed localities are not available in current sources, and the full extent of its range within the Orinoco system has not been precisely delimited.

Feeding

Like all Ancistrus, A. gymnorhynchus is primarily a periphyton grazer — it scrapes biofilm, algae, diatoms, and associated fine detritus from hard surfaces using its bicuspid, moveable teeth. This is a fundamentally different feeding mode from the wood-boring of Panaque or the mud-sifting of some Hypostominae; Ancistrus teeth are optimised for scraping surface films from rocks and wood rather than excavating the substrate.

In aquaria the species accepts the standard loricariid vegetable diet: algae wafers, spirulina pellets, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, spinach, and sweet potato. Regular availability of surfaces colonised by algae (well-lit rocks or driftwood) is beneficial. Supplementary protein in the form of small live or frozen invertebrates can be given occasionally but should not dominate the diet.

Mating

Courtship in Ancistrus gymnorhynchus follows the pattern established across the genus: males compete for and defend suitable spawning cavities, and the elaborate branched snout tentacles of mature males are believed to function in mate assessment. Studies on related Ancistrus species suggest that females preferentially spawn with males bearing more developed tentacles, which may signal condition and reproductive experience.

A territorial male will occupy and defend a cave or hollow — in nature a rock crevice, hollow log, or undercut bank; in the aquarium a ceramic tube, clay pot, or length of PVC — and display from its entrance. When a female in spawning condition approaches, the male coaxes her inside to deposit the clutch. Competition between males for premium cave sites can be intense, and dominant males will actively displace rivals.

Breeding

Ancistrus gymnorhynchus is a cave-spawning species with paternal brood care, as is typical across the genus. After the female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the cave walls or ceiling, she leaves; the male remains to fan the clutch with his pectoral fins, maintaining oxygenation and removing any eggs that fail. This fanning behaviour continues through the incubation period and into the early fry stage.

Incubation typically lasts five to seven days in Ancistrus species at tropical temperatures; fry remain attached to the yolk sac for a few additional days before becoming free-swimming. The male continues guarding until the fry begin to disperse and graze independently. In aquaria, conditioning adults on a varied diet of vegetables and live foods, maintaining good water quality, and providing suitable cave structures will encourage spawning attempts.

A small number of keepers of this species are registered in hobbyist databases, though specific breeding reports for A. gymnorhynchus are not extensively documented in available sources.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus gymnorhynchus reaches 5.5 in SL — larger than the most commonly kept bristlenoses (many of which are trade variants of A. cirrhosus kept at 4–4.5 in), but still manageable in a medium-sized aquarium. An aquarium of 25–30 US gal with good filtration, a moderate current, and ample flat surfaces for grazing would suit a single male or a pair.

Water conditions should reflect the Venezuelan tropical origin: temperature 75–81 °F, near-neutral to slightly acid or alkaline pH, and moderate hardness. The species is recorded at these parameters in available hobbyist notes. Strong filtration and regular partial water changes are advisable, as all Ancistrus produce considerable waste.

Essential furnishings include flat rocks or driftwood pieces for grazing surfaces and at least one tight cave or tube (slightly wider than the fish's body) per male for territory and potential spawning. Males can be territorial with one another in confined spaces; multiple males in a small tank risk persistent conflict. Tankmates should be peaceful; small tetras, rasboras, and Corydoras are all compatible.

The diet should be primarily plant-based: algae wafers and blanched vegetables form the staple, supplemented by grazing on any algae that develop on tank décor. The species is not commonly available in the trade and may require sourcing from specialist catfish hobbyist networks.

Conservation

Ancistrus gymnorhynchus has not been formally confirmed as assessed by the IUCN Red List; no direct IUCN listing was located for this species during the preparation of this account.
