Acestridium scutatum was formally described by Roberto E. Reis and Pablo Lehmann A. in 2009, in the paper 'Two new species of Acestridium Haseman, 1911 (Loricariidae: Hypoptopomatinae) from the Rio Madeira Basin, Brazil', published in Copeia 2009(3): 446–452. The type material was collected in the Rio Madeira basin of Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Acestridium scutatum Reis & Lehmann A., 2009 as the valid name.
The genus Acestridium was erected by Haseman in 1911 to hold a group of exceptionally slender, elongate loricariids placed in the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae — the same broad grouping that contains the familiar Otocinclus. Within the genus, A. scutatum is one of several narrowly distributed Amazonian species. The species epithet, scutatum, is Latin for 'shielded' or 'bearing a shield', referring to the bony scute armour of the body.
Morphology
Like other members of Acestridium, A. scutatum is a long, narrow, twig-like fish — the genus comprises the slenderest of the 'oto'-grade loricariids, with bodies adapted to lie pressed along thin stems, roots, and fallen leaves. The body is encased in the overlapping bony plates (scutes) typical of the family, and the epithet scutatum ('shielded') points directly to this armour. The mouth is the ventral suckermouth shared across Loricariidae, used to graze films from submerged surfaces.

Habitat
