One of the quieter members of a genus better known for its invasive representatives, the maze king pleco is a large-bodied sailfin from the Madeira river system — an animal that rewards patient keepers with a genuinely striking reticulated pattern and the industrious grazing behaviour of a true algae specialist, as long as the tank is honest about the space it demands.

Taxonomy & naming

Pterygoplichthys lituratus was originally described by Rudolf Kner in 1854 in the Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien (volume 7, pages 285/35, Plate 5 figure 3) under the combination Ancistrus lituratus, from a type locality of Rio Guaporé near Mato Grosso, within the Amazon system of Brazil. The lectotype (NMW 16416) was selected by Weber in 1992, who also placed the species in the genus Glyptoperichthys as G. lituratus — a combination used through the 1990s and early 2000s. Armbruster & Page (2006) and Ferraris (2007) confirmed the current combination Pterygoplichthys lituratus, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists as the valid name.

Within the genus, P. lituratus belongs to the 'sailfin pleco' lineage — large Hypostominae with a greatly elevated, sail-like dorsal fin bearing 10 or more rays. This elevated dorsal fin count (typically ≥ 10) is the most reliable field character separating Pterygoplichthys from the superficially similar Hypostomus, which typically has only 7–8 dorsal rays. The species circulates under the L-number L196 in the European aquarium import coding system (DATZ). The specific epithet lituratus is Latin for 'marked' or 'smeared', alluding to the reticulated pigmentation.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 14.5 in standard length (SL), making P. lituratus one of the larger members of the genus and a genuinely substantial aquarium fish. The body is fully armoured in overlapping bony scutes arranged in two lateral rows along the flanks. Ground colour is brownish to olivaceous, overlaid with an intricate maze-like or reticulated pattern of dark markings on the dorsal surface — pale worm-tracks on dark interspaces — which is responsible for the 'maze' common names. The ventral surface is lighter and typically unpatterned.

The dorsal fin is highly elevated into the characteristic sailfin profile of the genus, with 10–14 rays; in prime adults the extended leading rays give the fish a dramatic silhouette. Pectoral and pelvic fins are broad and muscular, functioning as holdfast organs against the substrate. The mouth is ventral and broadly suctorial, well adapted for grazing biofilm and soft algae from flat surfaces.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Mature males develop small odontode patches on the inner surface of the pectoral spines and along the leading edge of the pectoral fin; the genital papilla is a small but noticeably protruding stump in males, flat or recessed in females. Gravid females are visibly broader across the abdomen when viewed from above.

Habitat

The natural distribution of P. lituratus centres on the Madeira River basin, including the Guaporé (Iténez) and Mamoré river systems of Bolivia and Brazil, and extends into the Middle Amazon (Solimões). The type locality, Rio Guaporé near Mato Grosso, is a large, turbid whitewater river draining seasonally flooded lowland forest and cerrado-edge habitats. These rivers are nutrient-rich, with elevated conductivity and neutral to slightly alkaline pH compared with the blackwater tributaries of the central Amazon.

Like other large Pterygoplichthys, this species occupies warm, demersal habitats — shallow to moderately deep riverbeds, flooded margins, and large submerged logs and root masses. It is facultatively air-breathing, a feature of the entire genus, which allows it to survive in oxygen-poor, turbid conditions during the dry season when isolated pools can become hypoxic. Seasonal flooding dramatically expands available habitat and is likely a cue for breeding migrations. Water temperatures across the Guaporé–Madeira system range approximately 75–86 °F seasonally.

Feeding

Pterygoplichthys lituratus is an omnivorous grazer with a strong bias toward algae and periphyton — the biofilm communities (algae, bacteria, organic detritus, diatoms) that colonise submerged rocks, wood, and the substrate of slow- to moderate-current reaches. The broad, suctorial mouth is well suited to scraping these films from hard surfaces, and juveniles are especially effective algae consumers, making them attractive to aquarists managing nuisance algae.

As the fish matures, the diet broadens to include decaying organic matter, plant material, detritus, and small invertebrates. In the wild, gut-content analyses of related Pterygoplichthys species consistently show predominantly algal and detrital material with occasional invertebrate fragments. In the aquarium, adults should be fed a varied diet that includes high-quality algae wafers, spirulina-enriched sinking pellets, blanched vegetables (courgette/zucchini, cucumber, pumpkin, sweet potato), and occasional protein-rich foods such as bloodworm or prawns. Wood is beneficial as a substrate enrichment even if this species is not a true xylophage on the scale of Panaqolus.

Mating

Mating behaviour in Pterygoplichthys has been documented in the field for the closely related P. multiradiatus and P. pardalis, providing a plausible framework for P. lituratus. Males become highly territorial around burrow sites during the breeding season, which in the wild is cued by falling water levels at the onset of the dry season — a period when receding banks expose soft clay and earth suitable for tunnel excavation. Males use their robust pectoral spine odontodes to displace competing males and to guard the burrow entrance.

Males are believed to attract and court females at the burrow. Courtship is little-described in detail for this species specifically; females appear to select males based partly on burrow quality and partly on male condition. Given the large clutch sizes documented in congeners, pre-spawning conditioning on a high-quality, varied diet is important in captivity.

Breeding

In the wild, Pterygoplichthys lituratus is a burrow-nester with exclusively paternal brood care — a reproductive mode shared across the genus. The male excavates a horizontal tunnel (typically 12–23.5 in deep) in a soft earthen or clay bank along the river margin. The female deposits a mass of adhesive, bright orange-yellow eggs on the tunnel walls or ceiling; egg masses of congeners number in the hundreds to over a thousand eggs. After spawning, the female departs and the male seals himself inside with the clutch, fanning the eggs and protecting them from predation and oxygen depletion.

Captive breeding of P. lituratus has not been reliably documented on PlanetCatfish. The tunnel-nesting strategy is extremely difficult to replicate in a standard aquarium, requiring a specially constructed setup with a substrate deep enough for tunnel excavation and triggered by simulated dry-season water level reductions. Some keepers have used oversized PVC pipes or ceramic tubes as proxies, but success remains unreported for this species specifically. Related species (P. multiradiatus, P. pardalis) have been bred commercially in outdoor ponds in warm climates, particularly in Southeast Asia and Florida.

In the aquarium

At up to 14.5 in SL — roughly 17.5–19 in total length — P. lituratus is a large pleco that demands a correspondingly large aquarium. A minimum of 80 US gal is a reasonable starting point for a single adult, with 450+ litres preferable; this is not a fish suited to the typical community tank sold alongside it. Despite its size, the species is generally peaceful toward fish of dissimilar body shape; intraspecific aggression between adults of similar size is more of a concern.

Water parameters should reflect the warm, moderately hard whitewater Madeira origin: temperature 75–84 °F, pH 6.8–7.6, moderate hardness (dH 5–15). The species tolerates a wide range of conditions and is not particularly sensitive, but consistent water quality — low ammonia and nitrite, regular water changes — is essential given the substantial bioload large plecos produce.

Decor should include large flat rocks, sturdy bogwood, and broad caves or PVC shelters. Plants are generally ignored as long as the fish is well fed. Bright LED lighting in combination with a nutrient-rich water column will encourage algae growth on tank walls, which the fish will graze appreciatively. Supplementary feeding with high-quality sinking wafers and blanched vegetables is important; algae alone will not sustain a large adult. Suitable tankmates are medium to large robust fish — larger cichlids, large characins, other peaceful catfishes.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pterygoplichthys lituratus as Least Concern in 2020, based on a wide and apparently stable distribution across the Madeira basin and no evidence of major population decline. The species is exported in moderate numbers for the ornamental trade, primarily wild-caught from Bolivia and Brazil.

The broader conservation picture for Pterygoplichthys is complicated by the genus's well-documented invasive potential: several congeners (especially P. multiradiatus, P. pardalis, and P. disjunctivus) have established large feral populations outside their native range after aquarium releases, causing significant ecological damage to freshwater systems in southern Texas, Florida, Mexico, Hawaii, Taiwan, the Philippines, and elsewhere. P. lituratus itself does not have a documented invasive population at this time, but responsible disposal of aquarium fish is imperative — never release aquarium fish into natural waterways. The Madeira basin faces ongoing habitat pressures from the Madeira hydroelectric complex and associated sedimentation and hydrological alteration, which may affect long-term population dynamics.
