Named in honour of a naturalist who helped map the Amazon's most remote telegraph routes, the Madeira pleco is a medium-sized Hypostomus from one of South America's most biodiverse river systems. Reaching around 10 in, it typifies the hardy, armoured grazers that make the Madeira basin a hotspot for loricariid diversity.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus pyrineusi was described by Alipio de Miranda Ribeiro in 1920, making it one of the earlier members of a genus that would eventually grow to encompass well over 100 valid species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid name Hypostomus pyrineusi (Miranda Ribeiro, 1920). FishBase assigns this species ID 49898 and places it in family Loricariidae, subfamily Hypostominae.

The genus Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803 is the largest genus within Loricariidae and one of the largest genera of freshwater fishes globally, distributed across tropical and subtropical South America. Members of Hypostomus are characterised by the inferior suctorial mouth, bony scute armour, and the triangular, depressed body profile that defines the broader suckermouth catfish clade.
