Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus abilhoai was formally described by Alessandra Gubiani Bifi, Carla Simone Pavanelli, and Cláudio Henrique Zawadzki in 2009 in Zootaxa (number 2275, page 42, figure 1). The type locality is the Río Iguaçu near the municipality of Lapa, in the middle portion of the upper Río Iguaçu basin, at coordinates 25°47'35"S, 50°11'59"W, Paraná State, southern Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Ancistrus abilhoai Bifi, Pavanelli & Zawadzki, 2009 as a valid species, with no synonyms currently listed.
The species was named in honour of Vinícius Abilhoa, a Brazilian ichthyologist associated with the Museu de História Natural Capão da Imbuia in Curitiba and recognised for his contributions to the study of Paraná State's freshwater fish fauna. The name is a patronym honouring a person rather than a descriptor of the fish's morphology or distribution.
A. abilhoai belongs to the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae within Loricariidae. The Río Iguaçu basin, a major tributary of the Upper Paraná system flowing across the highlands of Paraná State, harbours a high degree of fish endemism, and several Ancistrus taxa have been described from this drainage in recent decades.
Morphology
Ancistrus abilhoai reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4 in (SL). The body follows the loricariid pattern: dorsoventrally flattened, armoured with rows of bony scutes, and equipped with a ventrally positioned, disc-like scraping mouth. The pectoral spines and the first dorsal spine are robust and bear odontodes, as is typical across the family.
The most diagnostic genus-level feature is the soft, branched fleshy tentacles that develop on the snout of mature males. In adult male A. abilhoai, these tentacles cover the rostral region and interopercular margins in the branching, bushy pattern characteristic of Ancistrus; they continue to elongate and branch with age. Females may develop small, unbranched tentacular growths around the snout margin but lack the full branched display of males — a sexual dimorphism so visually consistent across the genus that the presence or absence of elaborate snout tentacles is the most immediately useful field character for sexing adults.
Full colour description for A. abilhoai is not detailed in available sources beyond what is implied by the original description figure. Ancistrus from the Iguaçu basin generally display a dark brownish ground colour with fine pale spotting.
Habitat
Ancistrus abilhoai is known exclusively from the upper Río Iguaçu basin in Paraná State, southern Brazil, within the broader La Plata–Paraná river system. The upper Iguaçu flows across the Paraná Plateau, a broad tablelands region of southern Brazil that has been extensively converted to agriculture. The river is characterised by a basalt substrate in its upper reaches, with clear to slightly turbid water, and a distinct cool-temperate seasonal regime owing to the elevated latitude and altitude of the Paraná highlands.
Water temperatures in this basin are significantly cooler than in the lowland tropical rivers of Amazonia or the Orinoco; hobbyist records indicate a preferred range of 75–82 °F for A. abilhoai in the aquarium, though wild populations in the upper Iguaçu may experience cooler temperatures in southern winter (June–August). The benthic, hard-substrate grazing ecology typical of Ancistrus fits the rocky and woody habitat of fast-running highland tributaries in this drainage.
The upper Iguaçu basin is highly fragmented by dams and affected by agricultural runoff, making habitat connectivity an issue for endemic stream fishes.
Feeding
Ancistrus abilhoai is a periphyton and biofilm grazer, as are all Ancistrus. The ventral mouth, furnished with bicuspid moveable teeth, is designed for scraping thin layers of algae, diatoms, bacterial biofilm, and fine organic detritus from the surfaces of rocks, submerged wood, and other hard substrates. Unlike true wood-eating loricariids, Ancistrus does not digest structural cellulose but rather harvests the productive surface film that colonises submerged objects in flowing water.
In the aquarium, A. abilhoai is described as primarily vegetarian, accepting algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking foods, blanched courgette (zucchini), and cucumber. Hobbyist notes suggest the species will also graze actively on tank surfaces that have accumulated algae. The diet should be predominantly plant-based; protein-rich foods can be offered in small quantities but should not become the dietary staple.
Mating
Courtship in A. abilhoai follows the pattern established across the genus. Males are territorial and compete for access to suitable spawning cavities — in the wild, crevices in the basalt substrate or cavities in submerged wood; in the aquarium, ceramic tubes, clay pots, or lengths of PVC pipe. The male maintains and defends his chosen site, displaying to rival males and potential mates from the cave entrance.
The elaborate branched snout tentacles of adult males are thought to play a role in mate choice; females of Ancistrus species appear to assess males partly on the basis of tentacle development, which correlates with age and condition. When a ripe female approaches, the male coaxes her into the cave to spawn. Inter-male competition for cave sites can lead to territorial disputes, particularly in smaller tanks where hiding places are limited; males may engage in mouth-locking or lateral displays but serious injury is uncommon if sufficient territory and cover are available.
Breeding
Like all Ancistrus, A. abilhoai is a cave-spawner with paternal brood care. After the female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the interior walls or ceiling of the chosen cavity, the male takes sole charge of the clutch, fanning it continuously with his pectoral and ventral fins to maintain oxygen supply and removing any infertile or fungused eggs. The female takes no further part in brooding.
Incubation in Ancistrus typically lasts five to seven days at tropical temperatures, after which fry hatch already showing the characteristic body pattern in miniature. Fry remain in or near the nest attached to their yolk sacs for several more days, then become free-swimming and begin grazing independently. The male continues to guard until the brood disperses.
No breeding accounts for A. abilhoai are documented in available hobbyist databases; six keepers are registered on PlanetCatfish, indicating some cultivation has occurred. Standard Ancistrus breeding protocols — caves sized to the male, varied conditioning diet, clean water, and gradual temperature or water-change stimulus — should be applied.
In the aquarium
At 4 in SL, Ancistrus abilhoai is a compact bristlenose suited to medium-sized community aquaria. A tank of 20–25 US gal with good filtration, some current across hard surfaces, and ample décor is adequate for a pair or small group. Key furnishings are flat rocks and driftwood for grazing, and at least one cave or tube per male — the male's claim to a suitable cave is the cornerstone of its territory and reproductive activity.
Water conditions should reflect the species' highland Paraná State origin: temperature 75–82 °F, neutral to slightly acid pH. The upper Iguaçu is a soft-to-moderately-hard water system, and excessively hard, alkaline conditions should be avoided. Efficient filtration and weekly partial water changes of 20–30% are advisable.
Feeding is straightforward: algae wafers and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato) form the staple. Active grazing on surfaces colonised by algae is natural and desirable. The species is described as peaceful toward other species; males may be aggressive toward rival males, especially in small tanks without adequate cave territory. Compatible tankmates include small tetras, rasboras, and other non-competitive bottom-dwellers.
A. abilhoai does not carry an L or LDA number and is not widely available commercially; it is more likely to be encountered through specialist catfish breeders or South American fish importers than in general aquarium retail.
Conservation
Ancistrus abilhoai is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded in 2018. The species is known from the upper Río Iguaçu basin, a geographically constrained drainage that has experienced substantial habitat alteration — the Paraná highlands have been heavily converted to soy, maize, and wheat agriculture, and the Iguaçu itself is impounded at multiple points for hydroelectric generation.
The Least Concern designation reflects that no evidence of severe population decline has been documented at the time of assessment, but the restricted endemic range in a heavily modified watershed means that ongoing habitat degradation, sedimentation from agricultural runoff, and loss of riparian vegetation remain meaningful risk factors for this and other endemic Iguaçu fish.
Captive breeding in the hobby, while not extensively documented, reduces dependence on wild harvest. Continued monitoring of upper Iguaçu fish communities and formal reassessment as land-use changes accumulate would be appropriate for a range-restricted endemic such as A. abilhoai.
