One of the southernmost Ancistrus, Ancistrus brevipinnis ranges through the Laguna dos Patos drainage of Rio Grande do Sul — Brazil's coolest lowland river system. Originally described by Regan in 1904 as Xenocara brevipinnis, it has since been recombined into Ancistrus and is distinguished by its notably short fins.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus brevipinnis was first described by Regan in 1904 as Xenocara brevipinnis, in the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London (volume 17, part 3, number 1, page 257), based on specimens from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with the type locality in the Rio Camaquã basin. Eigenmann transferred the species to the genus Ancistrus in 1910 (page 411), creating the combination Ancistrus brevipinnis that the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises as valid today.

The genus Ancistrus takes its name from the Greek agkistron (hook), referencing the hooked interopercular odontodes that characterise the group. The specific epithet brevipinnis is a straightforward Latin compound: brevis (short) combined with pinna (fin), alluding to the abbreviated fin proportions that distinguish this species from relatives with more elongated fins.

Ancistrus brevipinnis belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae. The broader taxonomic framework for Loricariidae was treated by Armbruster (2004) and by Fisch-Muller (2003) in the Checklist of Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America, the latter being a principal reference for this species.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 4 in SL, derived from a 2017 revision (Ref. 116915); the original PlanetCatfish figure of approximately 3 in SL likely reflects the size reported in earlier literature rather than the full adult potential documented by revision.

The body form conforms to the Ancistrus ground plan: depressed, heavily armoured with bony scutes, with a ventrally placed suctorial mouth equipped with fine multi-cusped teeth suited to rasping algae and biofilm from hard substrates. The short fins implied by the name are a relative character distinguishing the species within its regional species complex.

As with all Ancistrus, sexual dimorphism is most evident in the development of snout tentacles. Males develop the fleshy, branched tentacles on the rostral pad that are the genus's most recognisable feature; females may produce short, simple tentacles along the snout margin but never approach the elaborate, bushy development of fully adult males. The species possesses the facultative or obligate air-breathing capacity characteristic of the genus.

Habitat

Ancistrus brevipinnis is distributed within the Laguna dos Patos basin in Rio Grande do Sul State, southernmost Brazil, with records from the Camaquã river system. The Laguna dos Patos drainage occupies the southernmost part of Brazil and connects to the broader La Plata system, flowing through a subtropical climate zone with notably cooler annual temperatures than tropical Brazil.

This thermal regime is ecologically significant: Rio Grande do Sul experiences winter temperatures substantially below those of Amazonian or central-Brazilian rivers, making A. brevipinnis one of the more cold-tolerant members of the genus. In the wild, the species occupies demersal freshwater habitats — riverbed substrates, submerged wood, and rocky faces in moderate current — as a benthic rasper. FishBase describes the thermal preference as temperate, distinguishing it from the tropical categorisation applied to most Ancistrus.

Feeding

Ancistrus brevipinnis feeds primarily as a vegetarian surface rasper, grazing biofilm, periphyton, and algae from rocks, wood, and firm substrate. This feeding mode is universal within Ancistrus and reflects the fine multi-cusped dentition and suctorial mouth designed for adhesion and rasping rather than predation.

In captivity the diet is easily replicated. Spirulina-enriched sinking wafers and algae discs provide the primary nutritional base; blanched vegetables — courgette (zucchini), cucumber, peas, and spinach — are widely accepted and should feature regularly. Occasional supplementation with small amounts of meaty foods such as frozen bloodworm is acceptable, but the diet should remain predominantly plant-based. Driftwood in the tank provides additional rasping material and shelter. Over-reliance on protein-rich foods is not advisable for long-term health.

Mating

Mating behaviour in A. brevipinnis follows the pattern well documented across the genus. Males establish and defend territories centred on a preferred cave or crevice, and competition between males for prime sites is the primary source of intraspecific aggression. The branched snout tentacles of males appear to function as both a signal of condition and a display structure in male–male interactions, while the hooked interopercular odontodes can be deployed in contact fights between rivals.

Gravid females are visibly broader behind the pectoral fins and carry an enlarged, rounded papilla. The male coaxes or herds a receptive female into the spawning cavity. In small aquaria housing more than one male, territorial conflict can escalate to fin damage; providing multiple caves and visual barriers substantially reduces stress.

Breeding

Ancistrus brevipinnis is a cave-spawner with paternal brood care, following the reproductive strategy universal within the genus. The male occupies a chosen cavity and defends it continuously through spawning and incubation. Eggs are adhesive, deposited on the inner walls of the cave, and the male fans the clutch with his fins to maintain oxygen flow while removing any eggs that fail.

Incubation at aquarium temperatures appropriate for the species — cooler than for tropical Ancistrus — typically takes five to eight days. Fry emerge carrying a yolk sac; the male continues guarding until the fry become mobile and begin exploring and feeding independently. No specific captive breeding records for A. brevipinnis are on file at PlanetCatfish, but the reproductive biology does not differ in principle from that of well-documented congeners. Conditioning the pair on varied plant-based foods and performing regular water changes helps prompt spawning readiness.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus brevipinnis is not widely available in the hobby and carries no common name or L-number; it is primarily of interest to catfish specialists focused on southern South American species. Its adult size of up to approximately 4 in SL is manageable, and its temperament matches the peaceful Ancistrus norm outside territorial disputes over caves.

The most important husbandry consideration is temperature. As a species from the temperate Laguna dos Patos drainage, A. brevipinnis is adapted to cooler water than most aquarium catfish. A range of approximately 61–75 °F is appropriate; sustained temperatures above 79–81 °F would place this species outside its comfort zone. This makes it better suited to cool-water community setups than to standard tropical tanks kept at 79–82 °F.

A tank of 20–25 US gal with adequate cave structure and wood furnishings suits a single individual or a pair. Males will compete for cave sites; in a group, multiple well-spaced caves and visual dividers reduce intraspecific conflict. The species is compatible with other peaceful fish that share the cooler temperature preference. Standard Ancistrus husbandry applies in all other respects: good filtration, weekly partial water changes, and a predominantly vegetarian diet are key.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus brevipinnis as Least Concern, assessment completed 7 November 2018. The species is restricted to the Laguna dos Patos drainage in Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil — a geographically confined range, but one where no significant population decline was identified at the time of assessment.

Rio Grande do Sul's river systems face pressure from agricultural intensification, sedimentation, and altered hydrological regimes associated with land use change. The restricted distribution of A. brevipinnis means that any significant degradation of the Camaquã or associated tributaries could have a proportionally larger impact on the species than on more widespread Ancistrus. The Least Concern status reflects a population assessed as stable, but the constrained range warrants ongoing monitoring.
