Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus brevifilis was formally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1920, in Indiana University Studies (volume 7, number 44, pages 7 and figures 2 and plate 1). The holotype (CAS 64609, ex IU 15080) was collected at Río Tiquirito at El Concejo, Venezuela, a tributary of the Río Tuy basin draining to the Caribbean coast. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, updated June 2026) treats the combination Ancistrus brevifilis Eigenmann 1920 as valid, placed in Loricariidae: Hypostominae. No synonyms are currently listed.
The genus Ancistrus Kner 1854 is one of the most species-rich loricariid genera, encompassing the bristlenose plecos. The name derives from the Greek agkistron (hook), referring to the hooked interopercular odontodes. The species epithet brevifilis comes from the Latin brevis (short) and filum (thread or filament), most likely in reference to the tentacles or odontodes. The species has no L-number assignment, as it was described before the L-number system and is not prominently traded under a code. It appears on PlanetCatfish with no common English name; local Venezuelan names include Corroncho, Cucha, and Guacuco — colloquial terms applied broadly to suckermouth catfishes in that region.
In Armbruster's (2004) phylogenetic framework for Loricariidae, Ancistrus sits within the tribe Ancistrini of Hypostominae, a well-supported clade of plecos defined by the presence of evertible cheek plates bearing odontodes.
Morphology
Adults of Ancistrus brevifilis reach a maximum standard length of 4.5 in (Fisch-Muller in Reis et al. 2003), with PlanetCatfish citing 4.5 in SL, placing it in the mid-range for the genus — larger than the widespread aquarium Ancistrus dolichopterus complex but not among the largest species. The body follows the typical Ancistrus plan: depressed, broadly oval in cross-section anteriorly, tapering to a more laterally compressed caudal peduncle, entirely encased in bony scutes except for the soft ventral surfaces.
The defining character of the genus — and the source of the common name 'bristlenose' — is the presence of fleshy tentacles (odontodes) on the snout and around the rostrum. In mature males these are elaborate and bushy, projecting outward from the interopercular region and the rostrum itself; females occasionally develop much shorter tentacles restricted to the snout margin. Ground colour is dark grey to blackish-brown, overlaid with small, pale whitish or yellowish spots distributed relatively evenly over the dorsal surface and flanks — a pattern that varies somewhat with collecting locality and age.
Dimorphism is pronounced: males develop the full complement of interopercular and rostral odontodes (the 'bristles'); mature females develop at most short marginal snout tentacles. Males also develop elongated odontodes on the pectoral spines during the breeding season. Females in breeding condition are noticeably broader in the abdominal region when viewed from above.
Habitat
Ancistrus brevifilis is endemic to the Río Tuy basin — the primary coastal river drainage of the Venezuelan cordillera Central, emptying into the Caribbean Sea near La Guaira — and is restricted to Venezuela. The IUCN (Perez 2023, assessed 2021) recognised five locations within the basin, primarily in clear, higher-elevation tributaries where water quality remains relatively good. The estimated extent of occurrence is 5,534 mi² and is inferred to be declining.
In the wild, the species favours the kind of streams and small rivers with clear to moderately turbid water, moderate current, and abundant submerged wood and root structure that characterises Andean foothills and coastal cordillera drainages in northern Venezuela. PlanetCatfish notes that the water should be clear, neutral, and soft to medium hard with a fairly strong current — consistent with the highland tributary character of its range. Temperature ranges from 70–77 °F per PlanetCatfish field and aquarium data, reflecting the cooler conditions of elevation compared to Venezuelan lowland rivers.
The species feeds and shelters among submerged wood accumulations and root tangles along the banks, in the manner typical of Venezuelan Ancistrus. Its microhabitat requirement for woody debris makes it sensitive to deforestation and channel alteration.
Feeding
Ancistrus brevifilis is primarily a herbivore and biofilm grazer. The genus is characterised by ventrally placed mouths with bicuspid teeth arranged in multiple rows, adapted for rasping the epilithic and epixylous biofilm — the assemblage of microalgae, diatoms, bacteria, and fine detritus — from hard substrates including rock, wood, and submerged roots. Sanchez-Garces (2006, cited in IUCN assessment) documents the general Ancistrus dietary mode as feeding on microalgae attached to submerged wood debris or aquatic macrophytes.
In the aquarium, all Ancistrus species are routinely maintained on vegetarian diets supplemented with occasional protein. Algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking pellets form the dietary backbone, supplemented by blanched vegetables (courgette/zucchini, cucumber, sweet potato, peas) and occasional protein in the form of thawed bloodworm or small quantities of carnivore wafer. The presence of driftwood is strongly recommended not merely as décor but as a natural food source: wood biofilm is an important dietary component, and many keepers observe their bristlenoses actively rasping driftwood surfaces. Overfeeding protein-heavy foods should be avoided.
Mating
Courtship in Ancistrus species follows a well-documented pattern across the genus and can be inferred for A. brevifilis. Males establish and defend crevice territories — typically hollow logs, caves, or tight rock spaces — and signal their condition through the elaborate interopercular and rostral tentacle display. A female in breeding condition is courted by a male who may perform short lateral circling displays and brief physical contacts to assess her readiness.
Male–male territorial interactions are common and can escalate to prolonged locked-gill confrontations in confined spaces. In the aquarium, providing multiple caves and sufficient tank volume prevents chronic territorial stress among males. PlanetCatfish notes that males may fight over territory if kept in too small a tank. The distinctive odontode development of males — which intensifies seasonally or in response to conditioning — is a reliable indicator of sexual readiness, as is the broader body profile of a gravid female.
Breeding
Ancistrus brevifilis is a cave-spawner following the pattern universal in the genus: the male selects and defends a cavity, attracts a female, she deposits adhesive eggs on the interior walls, and the male provides exclusive paternal care through hatching and into early free-swimming. Despite the species' Vulnerable IUCN status and restricted range, PlanetCatfish records no captive breeding reports for A. brevifilis specifically, which distinguishes it from the commonly bred aquarium Ancistrus (primarily A. cirrhosus and allied forms).
Based on the genus-level biology, clutch sizes typically run in the range of several dozen eggs, pale amber in colour, laid in a single dense mass on the ceiling or walls of the chosen cave. The male fans the clutch continuously during an incubation period of roughly 5–7 days at tropical temperatures, and guards the free-swimming fry for an additional week or two before they disperse. Fry consume algae and biofilm almost immediately, reducing the need for special feeding. Conditioning adults with a varied diet including regular vegetable matter, moderate protein, and clean well-oxygenated water with temperature fluctuation has proven effective in triggering spawning in other species of the genus.
In the aquarium
Ancistrus brevifilis is rarely, if ever, encountered in the ornamental fish trade under its own name. Its restricted Venezuelan range — now heavily impacted by urbanisation — means wild collection is unlikely to yield commercially significant numbers, and no captive-breeding programme appears established outside its native country. Collectors in the Tuy basin do occasionally encounter Ancistrus specimens along with other local suckermouth catfishes sold under regional names (Corroncho, Cucha), but species identification in the trade is rarely precise for Venezuelan Ancistrus.
If obtained, the care requirements align well with the broader genus. A tank of 25–40 US gal provides adequate space for a pair or small group, with multiple cave structures (ceramic tubes, coconut halves, pre-bored driftwood sections) to satisfy both shelter needs and the male's territorial requirements. Water parameters should reflect the Tuy highland origin: temperature 70–77 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderate hardness. Strong filtration providing clear, well-oxygenated water with a defined current direction is important; this is not a species adapted to warm, stagnant, or polluted conditions.
Driftwood is beneficial and should be included. Diet follows the genus standard: vegetable-heavy, with occasional protein. Compatibility with peaceful community fish is good; intraspecific male aggression can be managed by providing adequate territories.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus brevifilis as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion B1ab(i,iii), assessed on 15 January 2021 (Perez 2023). The assessment justification emphasises that the species is restricted to the Río Tuy basin and possibly the adjacent Lake Valencia and Paria River basins in Venezuela, with the most reliable evidence confining it to the Tuy. Five locations are recognised; the extent of occurrence is estimated at 5,534 mi² and is inferred to be declining.
The primary threats are all urban and agricultural in origin: expansion of Caracas and other cities across the Tuy catchment, industrial and domestic sewage discharged into river channels, road construction, and deforestation accelerating runoff and sedimentation. The population trend is inferred as decreasing. The Tuy basin is effectively one of Venezuela's most degraded major river systems due to its proximity to the national capital.
Conservation recommendations include designation of protected riparian corridors within the basin, reduction of point-source pollution, and further population monitoring. No ex-situ conservation programme or range occurrence within formally protected water bodies is currently documented. Taxonomic and phylogeographic research — particularly the range-delimitation review by de Souza et al. (2019, Zootaxa 4552) — is essential for understanding the true distribution and population structure of this and allied Ancistrus species in the region.
