Described only in 2019 from the Apure drainage of Venezuela, Ancistrus amaris is an unusual member of its genus — the males bear the short, stubby snout tentacles that are a defining feature of Ancistrus, but in amaris they are conspicuously underdeveloped, a diagnostic trait so distinctive the authors named the species for it. Its Near Threatened status reflects a distribution confined to a small pocket of the Orinoco basin under agricultural pressure.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus amaris was described by de Souza, Taphorn, and Armbruster in 2019 in their major revision of the genus Ancistrus across the northwestern Guiana Shield, the Orinoco Andes, and adjacent basins: 'Review of Ancistrus (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the northwestern Guiana Shield, Orinoco Andes, and adjacent basins with description of six new species', published in Zootaxa 4552(1). The holotype (MCNG 56679, 4 in SL) was collected from Venezuela, Estado Portuguesa, Orinoco/Apure drainage, río Las Marías. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Ancistrus amaris de Souza, Taphorn & Armbruster, 2019 as a valid species.

The species belongs to a grouping of 'wide-jawed' Ancistrus characterised by a relatively large dentary length relative to cleithral width (23.8–28.4% in specimens above 2.5 in SL). Jonathan Armbruster's earlier phylogenetic work (2004) provided the broader loricariid framework within which Ancistrus and its relatives in the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae are placed. Ancistrus is the most speciose genus in the tribe and one of the most diverse in all of Loricariidae, with species distributed throughout South America and into Central America.

Morphology

Ancistrus amaris reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4 in SL, placing it in the mid-range of Ancistrus body sizes. The body follows the general loricariid plan — dorsoventrally compressed, plated in bony scutes, with a ventral sucking disc formed by the lips and surrounding soft tissue. The dorsal fin originates above the posterior portion of the pectoral fins and, in H. amaris, the dorsal fin spine reaches the preadipose plate — a feature noted in the original description's diagnosis.

The genus Ancistrus is universally recognised by the hooked interopercular odontodes (tentacles or bristles) that adult males develop on and around the snout. In Ancistrus amaris these tentacles are present but notably short — a reduced development compared to most congeners, where elaborate, branched tentacles often extend well beyond the snout margins. This shortness is the defining diagnostic character of the species and the basis for its name. FishBase confirms males develop short tentacles (odontodes). Females typically lack tentacles or develop them only minimally.

The species is assigned to the 'wide-jawed' morphological group based on a relatively long dentary, distinguishable from other sympatric or near-sympatric Ancistrus in the northwestern Venezuela region.

Habitat

Ancistrus amaris is known from the Orinoco/Apure drainage of Estado Portuguesa in western Venezuela — the Andean piedmont and foothills region where streams descend from the Venezuelan Andes onto the Llanos plains. The type locality, río Las Marías, is a tributary within this drainage. Estado Portuguesa is an agricultural region in the Venezuelan lowlands, and the rivers of the Apure system in this area flow through a landscape that includes both gallery forest and open savanna, with water chemistry influenced by the Andean catchment above.

Specific water parameter measurements for the type locality are not available in accessible sources. The northwestern Venezuelan Orinoco tributaries generally carry moderately soft to medium-hardness water with temperatures in the range typical of tropical lowland systems. Ancistrus as a genus are associated with hard substrates — rocks, submerged wood, and root tangles — in streams and rivers, and A. amaris would be expected to occupy similar microhabitats along the rocky or woody margins of its native rivers.

Feeding

No dietary study specific to Ancistrus amaris has been published. The genus Ancistrus, broadly characterised as algivores and biofilm scrapers, uses its ventral rasping mouth to harvest algae, periphyton, and associated organic matter from hard substrates. The wide jaws and dental structure of A. amaris are consistent with this feeding mode.

In the aquarium, Ancistrus species generally feed readily on algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach, sweet potato), and naturally occurring tank algae. Occasional invertebrate or protein-based foods are accepted by most species in the genus. Consistent with the genus, A. amaris would be expected to supplement algae and biofilm with small invertebrates and fine detritus in the wild.

Mating

Mating behaviour has not been specifically documented for Ancistrus amaris. The genus is well studied in captivity, and reproductive behaviour across Ancistrus is highly consistent: males select and defend cavities — hollow wood sections, crevices between rocks, or purpose-built ceramic caves — into which they attract females for spawning. The male's tentacles play a role in mate assessment; the reduced tentacle development of A. amaris males is unusual in this context, and whether this affects mate-choice dynamics has not been investigated.

Territorial competition between males for preferred spawning sites is typical of the genus, and males can be aggressive toward one another, particularly in confined spaces. Females are broadly similar in body form to males but lack the diagnostic short tentacles.

Breeding

Breeding data specific to Ancistrus amaris are not available. The genus Ancistrus is one of the most consistently bred loricariid genera in captivity across its many species, and the reproductive biology is well characterised: the female deposits adhesive, pale amber eggs in dense clusters inside the chosen cavity; the male then remains at the entrance to guard and aerate the clutch, fanning it with his fins and removing any unfertilised or fungused eggs.

Incubation typically spans five to seven days at tropical temperatures in other Ancistrus species, after which fry emerge and begin feeding on algae and soft foods within days. The male continues to guard the fry for a period after hatching. Whether A. amaris, as a recently described species not established in the trade, has been bred in captivity is not known.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus amaris does not appear to be established in the ornamental fish trade, having been described in 2019. No captive husbandry records are available. In principle, the husbandry requirements of A. amaris would be expected to align with the well-documented needs of other Ancistrus species from the Orinoco basin.

For analogous Orinoco-drainage Ancistrus, a tank of 20–30 US gal with a moderate current, smooth rocks or driftwood for grazing and hiding, and cave structures for potential breeding would be appropriate. Water should be soft to moderately hard, pH around 6.5–7.5, and temperature 75–82 °F, reflecting the range typical of Apure drainage tributaries. Algae wafers and blanched vegetables form the dietary core, supplemented by naturally developing algae on tank surfaces. Males should not be housed together in small tanks due to territorial aggression around cave sites. These are inferences from generic Ancistrus husbandry; no species-specific captive data exist.

Conservation

Ancistrus amaris is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated December 2022 — relatively recently after the species' description in 2019. The NT status reflects the species' restricted known distribution in the Apure drainage of Estado Portuguesa, Venezuela, a region subject to intensive agricultural development that affects riparian habitats and water quality in the streams the species inhabits.

Venezuela's western Llanos region has experienced widespread conversion of gallery forest and riparian corridors to cattle pasture and arable land, leading to sedimentation, increased nutrient loading, and loss of the hard-substrate and woody microhabitats that Ancistrus rely on. The political and economic instability that has affected Venezuela in the period since the species' description further complicates monitoring and conservation management. The relatively small geographic extent of known occurrence and the ongoing habitat pressure in the type-locality region are the likely bases for the NT assessment. Population trends are not formally documented.
