One of the largest members of the Hypostominae and the type species of the emarginatus group within Aphanotorulus, this substantial armoured catfish from the upper Amazon and its tributaries is a fish of strong current and coarse rocky substrate — an understated but formidable presence that rewards patient keepers with a rare look at life on the riverbed of one of the world's most biodiverse drainage systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphanotorulus horridus was first described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1854 in his monograph Die Hypostomiden (Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, vol. 7, p. 259), from type specimens collected at Forte do Príncipe on the Rio Guaporé, a major tributary of the Madeira in what is now western Brazil. The species has moved between genera across its taxonomic history: originally placed in Hypostomus by Kner, it was later treated under Squaliforma as Squaliforma horrida before Ray and Armbruster (2016) formally erected the genus Aphanotorulus in Zootaxa 4072(5) to receive it and its close relatives.

Aphanotorulus horridus is the type species of the emarginatus group within the genus, which Ray and Armbruster diagnose by a light tan background colour with small dark spots no larger than half the diameter of a lateral plate, combined with hypertrophied odontodes on the head and lateral plates of nuptial males — features that distinguish Aphanotorulus members from the many superficially similar Hypostomus species with which they are sympatric.

An L-number sometimes applied to this species — L108, collected from the Rio Napo in Ecuador — remains disputed. Some sources assign L108 to Aphanotorulus emarginatus rather than A. horridus, and the assignment has not been confirmed from PlanetCatfish primary records. Until the code is formally resolved against voucher specimens, lNumber is treated as null for this species.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 14 in standard length (SL), placing Aphanotorulus horridus among the larger members of its subfamily. The body is fully armoured with the overlapping bony scutes characteristic of loricariids; the lateral scutes are described by Kner's epithet: each scute bears a slight keel that terminates in several small hook-like projections, giving the flanks a bristly or rough texture — the source of the species name horridus.

Background colouration is a light tan to pale brown, overlaid with small dark spots that do not exceed half the diameter of a single lateral plate. This pattern is a key character separating Aphanotorulus from Hypostomus species of similar size that bear larger or differently arranged markings.

Sexual dimorphism becomes pronounced in breeding males, which develop hypertrophied interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) and substantially enlarged odontodes along the dorsal surfaces and lateral scutes. The genital papilla provides an additional indicator: the male's papilla is longer and more pointed, while the female's is shorter and recessed. Gravid females appear noticeably broader when viewed from above.

Habitat

Aphanotorulus horridus occupies an extensive range across the upper Amazon basin: records span the mainstem Amazon above its confluence with the Rio Negro, plus the Rio Napo, Rio Marañón, Rio Ucayali, Rio Juruá, Rio Purus, and the Rio Madeira drainage (which includes the type locality on the Rio Guaporé). The species is documented from Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia.

As a demersal, facultative air-breathing loricariid, A. horridus is associated with the riverbed and submerged structure — rocks, root tangles, and coarse substrate in well-oxygenated water. Its broad distribution across multiple large whitewater and clearwater tributaries suggests tolerance of a range of water chemistries, but specific field measurements for temperature, pH, and hardness from its natural microhabitats were not available in the sources reviewed. The facultative air-breathing ability is an adaptation shared with many large Hypostominae that inhabit lowland reaches subject to seasonal oxygen depletion.

Feeding

Like the majority of Hypostominae, Aphanotorulus horridus feeds primarily by scraping periphyton, algae, and fine detritus from submerged surfaces using its ventrally placed, multi-cusped teeth. The diet is essentially omnivorous with a strong herbivorous bias — biofilm, algae, and detritus form the bulk of natural intake, supplemented opportunistically by whatever invertebrate matter is encountered on the substrate.

In aquarium care, this translates to a regimen of algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach, peas). Protein-rich supplementation with foods such as sinking shrimp pellets or occasional frozen bloodworm is acceptable in moderation; the gut of large Hypostominae is adapted for a high-fibre plant-based diet and should not be pushed toward excessive protein. Driftwood and smooth rocks provide both feeding surfaces and shelter.

Mating

Specific courtship observations for Aphanotorulus horridus in the aquarium are sparse in the published literature. The general pattern for large cave-spawning Hypostominae is that males establish and vigorously defend territories around suitable crevice or hollow sites, displaying enlarged odontodes to rivals and prospective mates. Nuptial males of Aphanotorulus develop markedly hypertrophied odontodes on the head and flanks — more pronounced than in many Hypostomus — and territorial interactions between males in a confined space can result in significant fin and scale damage.

Given the species' adult size of roughly 14 in SL, any attempt at captive breeding would require a very large system with multiple substantial cave structures widely separated to reduce inter-male conflict. At present, captive breeding of A. horridus has not been reported in accessible hobby sources.

Breeding

Aphanotorulus horridus is a cave spawner, following the pattern established for its subfamily: eggs are deposited inside a sheltered cavity and guarded by the male until hatching. Beyond this general inference from loricariid biology and the brief hobbyist report that males in cave-spawning species guard the brood, no detailed clutch-size estimates, incubation times, or documented aquarium spawnings for this particular species were found in the sources reviewed. Its large adult size means that suitable spawning caves in captivity would need to be substantial — comparable in scale to those used for Pterygoplichthys or large Hypostomus — and rarely reproduced under hobby conditions.

In the aquarium

At up to 14 in SL, Aphanotorulus horridus is a large pleco that demands a correspondingly large aquarium: a minimum footprint of 78.5 in length with a volume of at least 1,0.5 US gal is the figure cited by experienced keepers. Anything smaller will compromise both the fish's wellbeing and water quality, as large loricariids produce substantial waste.

The tank should be furnished with multiple substantial hiding places — large root tangles, slate or smooth stone caves, and thick driftwood accumulations — since A. horridus is nocturnal and spends much of the day wedged in cover. Lighting can be subdued or provided with a day/night cycle that gives the fish undisturbed dark hours for foraging activity. Filtration must be robust: high turnover, efficient mechanical and biological stages, and regular maintenance are non-negotiable.

Water parameters drawn from the upper Amazon context suggest temperature around 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and moderate softness (5–10 dGH), though the species' wide natural range implies it tolerates some variation. The fish is generally peaceful toward unrelated species but territorial toward conspecifics; keeping more than one in a tank that cannot provide separated cave territories is inadvisable. Tankmates should be robust enough to hold their own — large peaceful cichlids, large characids, or other bottom dwellers that occupy different microhabitats are appropriate.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Aphanotorulus horridus as Least Concern following an evaluation published 18 May 2022, reflecting the species' wide distribution across five countries and multiple major Amazon tributaries. No significant range contraction or population decline has been documented.

The upper Amazon basin faces ongoing anthropogenic pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, hydroelectric development, and gold-mining activity — the last of which is particularly damaging in the Madeira and Guaporé drainages near the species' type locality. These pressures affect turbidity, substrate quality, and dissolved oxygen in ways that could locally disadvantage large demersal species like A. horridus over time, though current evidence does not elevate its conservation status above Least Concern.
