Taxonomy & naming
Chaetostoma loborhynchos was described by Johann Jakob von Tschudi in 1846 in Untersuchungen über die Fauna Peruana (page 26, Plate 4), from specimens collected at the Río Tullunayo in the Vitoc Mountain region of the eastern Andes, Peru. The description established both the species and placed it within a genus already becoming known for the distinctive Andean rheophilic rubber-nose plecos. Tschudi's 1846 work on Peruvian fauna remains one of the foundational texts for Andean vertebrate systematics.
The genus Chaetostoma Tschudi, 1846 — erected in the same publication — is itself one of the most diverse loricariid genera in the Andes, with dozens of valid species distributed across the western and eastern slopes and foothills from Venezuela to Bolivia. Chaetostoma species share several diagnostic characters within subfamily Hypostominae: the presence of interopercular odontodes (stiff spines behind the gill cover that can be erected), the absence of abdominal plates, and — unlike Chaetostoma platyrhynchus — the absence of odontode-bearing plates on the snout edge. The genus is distinguished from the superficially similar Ancistrus by the complete absence of fleshy tentacles on the snout.
Morphology
Chaetostoma loborhynchos reaches approximately 5.5 in standard length (SL) based on PlanetCatfish records, with FishBase giving 5.5 in SL as the reported maximum — placing it among the mid-sized members of the genus. The body is fully plated in the loricariid manner, with keeled lateral scutes and the ventrally depressed, broad-headed profile typical of Chaetostoma.
The species name refers directly to the most distinctive external feature: the distinctively lobed or fleshy snout (from Greek lobos, lobe, and rhynchos, snout), which gives Chaetostoma species their common collective name of rubber-nose or rubbernose plecos. The snout tissue is highly innervated and flexible, an adaptation for navigating rocky substrates in fast current and for gripping surfaces while feeding.
Sexual dimorphism follows the Chaetostoma genus pattern. Males have a proportionally larger and broader head, a slimmer ventral profile, and — conspicuously — disproportionately large pelvic fins. This pelvic-fin hypertrophy is functionally linked to reproduction: the enlarged fins are thought to fold over the egg clutch during fertilisation in fast current, shielding sperm from being swept away before contact with eggs. Interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) are also more developed in mature males.
Habitat
The type locality is the Río Tullunayo in the Vitoc Mountain zone of the eastern Andes, Peru — a high-gradient, fast-flowing Andean stream draining toward the upper Amazon. The broader distribution encompasses the Tambo River sub-basin within the Ucayali drainage, plus the Marañón basin, placing the species in the Amazonian foothills and montane zone of Peru.
Like all Chaetostoma, C. loborhynchos is a strict rheophile — a fast-water specialist. Its natural habitat consists of rocky, highly oxygenated Andean streams and rivers with strong current, clear water, and cobble or boulder substrates colonised by periphyton and epilithic algae. These conditions are characteristic of the middle-elevation Andean foothill zone where gradient is still steep but the streams are less torrential than high-altitude headwaters. No quantified field water parameters have been published for this species specifically.
The IUCN EN assessment flags both the restricted extent of occurrence (estimated below 5,0 mi²) and the continuing decline in riverine habitat quality in the Tambo River basin due to deforestation and agricultural runoff — pressures that are intensifying across the Peruvian Amazon foothills.
Feeding
Chaetostoma loborhynchos is a grazer and epilithic algae scraper, using its flexible, fleshy snout and ventral sucker-mouth to rasp periphyton and biofilm from rock surfaces in swift current. This is the defining foraging ecology of the genus: the rubber snout allows tight contact with irregular rock surfaces, and the interopercular odontodes provide a secondary grip anchor. The fish is a facultative air-breather, an adaptation that allows brief excursions into hypoxic microhabitats or exposed rock surfaces.
No captive feeding data exist for C. loborhynchos. By genus analogy, appropriate aquarium foods would include algae wafers, spirulina pellets, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and other vegetable matter presented in areas of moderate current to simulate natural foraging posture.
Mating
Courtship behaviour has not been directly observed in Chaetostoma loborhynchos, but the sexually dimorphic characters of the genus illuminate what is likely. Males develop the prominent pelvic fins and broader heads characteristic of breeding condition, and these structures appear functionally linked to the reproductive strategy. The oversized pelvic fins are hypothesised to act as a sperm-retention shield during fertilisation in fast-flowing water: by inverting over the egg clutch immediately after spawning, the male's pelvic girdle creates a localised low-flow zone that allows sperm to contact eggs before being diluted and swept downstream.
Males are expected to be territorial around preferred spawning sites — flat rock undersurfaces or crevices in fast-flow zones — and to exclude rival males during the breeding season.
Breeding
The reproductive biology of Chaetostoma loborhynchos follows the fast-water spawning pattern documented for other Chaetostoma species. Spawning occurs in shallow, high-velocity water on the underside of flat rocks, cobbles, or other horizontal surfaces. The female deposits adhesive eggs on the substrate ceiling of this microhabitat, and the male subsequently broods upside-down, his body covering and protecting the egg mass. This ventral-brooding posture is unusual in fishes and appears to be an adaptation for maintaining contact with the clutch against current forces.
Clutch sizes have not been published for C. loborhynchos specifically. PlanetCatfish records no registered keepers or captive breeding events for the species. The combination of demanding rheophilic husbandry requirements and the species' rarity in trade means captive breeding has not been achieved in documented settings.
In the aquarium
Chaetostoma loborhynchos is essentially absent from the aquarium trade. PlanetCatfish records no registered keepers and only a single photograph (a dorsal view). The species does not carry an L-number designation, reflecting its marginal presence in commercial catfish circles.
For husbandry, the Chaetostoma template applies: a strong, directional current is mandatory, along with high dissolved oxygen (powerhead or surface agitation), a rocky aquascape with flat stones stacked to create crevices, and a diet based on algae and vegetable foods. Water parameters consistent with Andean foothill streams — cool to moderate temperatures, soft to moderately hard, well-oxygenated — are appropriate, though species-specific field data are not published. Tank size should comfortably accommodate a mid-sized pleco with active rheophilic behaviour.
Given the species' Endangered status and restricted wild range, acquisition outside of any potential captive-bred programme would raise serious ethical and legal questions. The species is not recommended for general hobbyist pursuit.
Conservation
Chaetostoma loborhynchos is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated 23 April 2014 under criterion B1ab(iii,v). This criterion is triggered by a restricted extent of occurrence (estimated below 5,0 mi²) combined with a fragmented population and continuing decline in both the extent and quality of riverine habitat and in estimated population size.
The primary threats are deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon foothills driving sedimentation into Andean streams, combined with agricultural expansion and associated runoff into the Tambo and Ucayali sub-basins. These pressures degrade the clear, rocky, fast-flowing stream habitat on which C. loborhynchos depends, smothering the periphyton and biofilm communities that support its diet and replacing clean cobble substrates with fine sediment unsuitable for spawning or foraging.
No population estimates have been published, and no captive population exists as a conservation backstop. C. loborhynchos is an Andean endemic with no known buffer range beyond its restricted distribution — a profile that warrants continued monitoring and habitat protection in the Tambo and Vitoc river systems.
