A high-altitude armoured catfish from the Peruvian Andes, Ancistrus occloi inhabits fast-flowing Urubamba headwaters at nearly 2,750 metres above sea level — a cold, turbulent environment that sets it apart from the lowland bristlenoses that dominate the aquarium trade. Its epithet honours an Inca goddess, and its population faces the steady pressure of deforestation, artisanal gold mining, and local subsistence fishing across the Urubamba, Huánuco, and Ucayali drainages.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus occloi was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1928 in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 10, volume 2, number 7, page 86), based on material collected from the Río Urubamba at Ollantaytambo, Peru. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Ancistrus occloi Eigenmann, 1928 as a valid species. A complementary description with plate illustrations was subsequently provided by Eigenmann and Allen (1942, page 197, plate 10, figures 1–2).

The species belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae — the suckermouth armoured catfishes, the most species-rich family of freshwater fish in the Neotropics. Fisch-Muller (2003) treated the species in the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America. Within the large and taxonomically challenging genus Ancistrus, A. occloi stands out for its high-altitude distribution in the upper Amazon drainage of Peru, with additional records from the Pachitea River basin (MUSM and MHN-UNMSM collections).

The specific epithet occloi honours Mama Occlo (also spelled Ocllo), the Inca goddess and, in Andean mythology, mother of Manco Cápac — the legendary founder of the Inca civilisation. The name reflects the species' origin in the Andean heartland of the Urubamba valley, a region of deep cultural significance to Quechua-speaking peoples. The common name in Spanish, carachama, is used locally throughout the Peruvian highlands for various armoured loricariids that are consumed as food.

Morphology

Ancistrus occloi reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in (SL), placing it among the larger members of a genus that typically spans 2–6 in SL. Like all Ancistrus, the body is encased in overlapping bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows, providing armour that complements life in high-velocity Andean streams where abrasion from cobbles and gravel is constant.

The most diagnostically useful feature of the genus is the snout tentacle array. Adult males develop highly branched, fleshy tentacles on the snout and around the rim of the head — the 'bristlenose' character — which are absent or vestigial in juveniles of both sexes and in most adult females. Females may develop short tentacles along the snout margin but never approach the elaborate branching of mature males. Eigenmann's original plate (reproduced in Eigenmann and Allen 1942) illustrates the lateral profile and dorsal view of A. occloi, showing the broad depressed head, the relatively large eyes set high on the head, and the robust caudal peduncle typical of a current-adapted loricariid.

No detailed meristic or colour description from the original type series is reproduced in the secondary literature covered by this cache. The IUCN assessment notes the species as benthopelagic — spending time both near the substrate and in mid-water along the stream bed.

Habitat

Ancistrus occloi is unusual among its genus for the altitude at which it lives. The type locality at the Río Urubamba, Ollantaytambo sits at approximately 2,743 metres above sea level (9,000 feet), within the upper Amazon system in the Cusco region of Peru. This places the species in one of the coldest freshwater environments occupied by any Ancistrus — a fast-flowing, rocky, oxygen-rich montane river regime far removed from the warm lowland streams where most bristlenoses are collected.

The IUCN Red List assessment (Velasquez et al., assessed 23 April 2014) describes A. occloi habitat as permanent rivers and streams with fast current and rocky substrates. The fish use their modified sucker-mouth and ventral surface to anchor against current-swept cobbles, and the assessment notes they possess a modified stomach capable of aerial respiration, an adaptation that may assist in the thin-air, rapidly draining waters of the Andean foothills.

Distribution encompasses the upper Urubamba River basin and the Pachitea River basin, both within the Ucayali drainage of the upper Amazon system in Peru. Populations have been recorded at sites in the Urubamba, Huánuco, Ucayali, and Cusco departments. The species is listed as Peru-endemic in the IUCN assessment. Associated vegetation along these streams is riparian montane forest, now subject to deforestation-driven sedimentation.

Feeding

Ancistrus occloi is an herbivore and algae grazer in the wild. The IUCN assessment records diet simply as algae, consistent with the broadly vegetarian feeding strategy shared across the genus Ancistrus. In the high-altitude streams it inhabits, benthic algae, periphyton (the complex of microalgae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and organic detritus coating submerged rock surfaces), and aufwuchs attached to cobbles form the primary food resource. The robust sucker-mouth and fine, multi-cusped teeth are well suited to rasping these epilithic biofilms from hard substrates.

In aquarium conditions, the established genus-level husbandry applies: algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking foods form the dietary backbone, supplemented with fresh or blanched vegetables such as courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and spinach. PlanetCatfish notes a primarily vegetarian diet. Occasional offerings of small invertebrate foods are unlikely to cause harm but are not required for this algae-specialist. Ensuring adequate hard surfaces for biofilm growth — smooth stones, slate, or driftwood with algae — supports natural grazing behaviour.

Mating

Courtship in Ancistrus follows a cave-centred territorial system documented across the genus, and A. occloi is expected to conform to this pattern. Mature males occupy and defend cave or crevice sites — natural refuges within the rocky Andean stream habitat, equivalent to rock overhangs, undercut boulders, and cobble cavities. Males advertise their fitness and defend territory against rival males, with the elaborate branched snout tentacles potentially serving a role in mate attraction; the IUCN assessment notes the possibility that male tentacles function as larval mimicry to attract egg-laying females, a hypothesis proposed for the genus by Burgess (1994).

Females are attracted to males already in possession of clutches — a female preference for proven brooding males documented in Ancistrus — meaning that a male successfully guarding eggs is more likely to attract further spawning attempts. In A. occloi's high-altitude natural environment, seasonal temperature shifts associated with highland rainfall cycles likely serve as spawning cues, driving reproductive activity into periods of warming water or increased flow.

Breeding

Ancistrus occloi is a cave-spawner with exclusive paternal brood care — the reproductive mode universal to the genus Ancistrus. The IUCN Red List assessment provides genus-level breeding data derived from the literature: females deposit 20–200 adhesive eggs onto the interior walls of a cave or cavity nest; eggs hatch in approximately 4–10 days; the male guards and fans the clutch continuously during incubation; fry absorb their yolk sac within 2–4 days of hatching and then begin swimming freely. The male continues to brood for approximately 7–10 days post-hatching, after which juveniles disperse.

Male territoriality extends to egg protection: males have been observed to cannibalise eggs of a displaced male, and males guard clutches aggressively against intruders. No captive breeding report specifically for A. occloi is on record at PlanetCatfish. The species' cold-water origin suggests that successful aquarium breeding would likely require water temperatures cooler than those typical for lowland Ancistrus, though specific conditioning parameters have not been documented in the literature available to this cache. Clutch size within the genus ranges widely (20–200 eggs), and individual variation based on female body size is expected.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus occloi is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade, and its cold, fast-flowing Andean headwater origin makes it a specialist subject rather than a standard bristlenose substitute. Any keeper working with this species should be aware that its natural environment at nearly 2,2461 ft asl is markedly cooler than the tropical lowlands: water temperatures in Andean montane rivers at this altitude can fall well below 68 °F in the dry season, and the species is not adapted to the 79–82 °F warmth routinely maintained for lowland Ancistrus species.

PlanetCatfish lists it as a peaceful community fish compatible with non-aggressive tankmates, with males exhibiting some territorial behaviour toward each other — the standard pattern for the genus. The cave-dwelling lifestyle requires provision of suitable spawning caves (ceramic breeding tubes, PVC pipe sections, tight rock crevices) even in a display context, as these provide essential refuge from stress. Strong water flow and high oxygen saturation are appropriate given the fast-current rocky stream habitat.

Diet in captivity follows standard Ancistrus protocol: algae wafers and spirulina foods form the core, with vegetable supplements. Driftwood is beneficial as a foraging substrate for biofilm even if A. occloi is not a dedicated wood-eater in the manner of Panaqolus. Water quality must be maintained carefully; high-altitude populations may be sensitive to the organic loads and elevated temperatures more tolerated by lowland relatives. No established aquarium husbandry protocol specific to this species has been published.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus occloi as Least Concern (LC) on 23 April 2014, with the assessment published in 2016 (assessors: Velasquez M., Hidalgo del Aguila M., and Chocano L.; reviewer: Cox N.A.). The justification notes a wide range and probably stable population, while flagging the need for monitoring.

Threats identified in the IUCN assessment are multiple and ongoing. Deforestation across the Urubamba and adjoining valleys causes erosion and downstream sedimentation, degrading the rocky substrate that A. occloi depends on for feeding and reproduction. Artisanal gold mining introduces suspended sediment and potentially chemical contamination into Andean streams. Industrial effluents from agricultural and mining operations pose additional risks. Subsistence fishing — including direct harvest of Ancistrus consumed locally as food in the Urubamba, Huánuco, Ucayali, and Cusco departments — adds direct extraction pressure.

The species occurs within the Reserva Comunal Machiguenga and possibly within Parque Nacional Otishi, providing some degree of habitat protection. The IUCN assessment notes the species needs updating, acknowledging that conservation status data may not reflect current population trends. Given the accumulating human pressures on Andean headwaters throughout Peru, ongoing monitoring of this high-altitude endemic is warranted.
