Taxonomy & naming
Baryancistrus hadrostomus was described by de Oliveira, Rapp Py-Daniel and Oyakawa in 2019 in Copeia 107(3): 481–492, alongside a second new species, B. micropunctatus, in a paper titled "Two new species of the armored catfish genus Baryancistrus ... from Jari River, Amazon Basin, Brazil." The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats it as a valid species in the genus Baryancistrus Rapp Py-Daniel, 1989.
The genus name Baryancistrus derives from the Greek barys (heavy) and agkistron (hook), referring to the robust interopercular odontodes shared across the genus. The species epithet hadrostomus combines Greek hadros (stout, well-developed, large) and stoma (mouth), describing the extremely large oral disk that distinguishes this species.
The original description explicitly synonymizes three long-circulating aquarium-trade L-numbers under this name: L219, L323, and L324 — all captures from the same Jari/Iratapuru drainage that hobbyists had, before 2019, treated as visually similar but formally undescribed color forms. The authors diagnose B. hadrostomus from its congeners chiefly by its unique color pattern (a gray-to-black body with small, widely spaced white points) combined with its unusually large oral disk and dentition.
Morphology
Baryancistrus hadrostomus is a large-bodied, high-backed loricariid with the heavy bony armor typical of Hypostominae. Aquarium and hobby sources report a maximum size around 12 in total length, consistent with the larger end of the genus (some congeners, such as B. xanthellus, approach a similar scale). No standard-length maximum from the original type series has been located in the sources consulted here; where a precise SL figure is not published, this article reports the trade/hobby total-length estimate rather than inventing an SL conversion.
The most distinctive feature, per the original description, is the oral disk: exceptionally large and bearing a high number of slender, long-stemmed teeth, an adaptation reflected directly in the species name. Coloration is unique for the genus — a gray-to-black ground color overlaid with small, widely and evenly spaced white spots, distinguishing it at a glance from the more densely spotted or blotched patterns of relatives like B. niveatus or B. demantoides.
Sexual dimorphism has been noted by hobbyists rather than formally quantified: mature males reportedly develop a broader, longer head and longer pectoral-fin spines than females, a pattern typical of many rheophilic Hypostominae where males use head and fin armament in territorial contests.
Habitat
Baryancistrus hadrostomus is known from the Jari River (rio Jari) basin, on the Pará/Amapá state border in the Amazon basin of Brazil — a Guiana Shield drainage characterized by clear water flowing over ancient crystalline rock. The type locality is the first waterfall (cachoeira) of the Iratapuru River, a tributary of the Jari, near Laranjal do Jari.
Within this system the species occupies shallow, fast-flowing stretches over stony and rocky substrate — the classic rheophilic, high-oxygen microhabitat exploited by many Baryancistrus and related Hypostominae genera. Hobby sources citing collection conditions report warm water in the range of roughly 79–86 °F and a mildly acidic to neutral pH of about 6.0–7.2, consistent with clear-water Guiana Shield rapids. No peer-reviewed depth, conductivity, or seasonal-flow data specific to this species have been located; these hobby-sourced parameters should be read as indicative field/trade conditions rather than a formal habitat study.
Feeding
In the wild, Baryancistrus hadrostomus almost certainly grazes periphyton — the algae, diatom, and biofilm mat coating exposed rock in fast Amazonian rapids — using its unusually large, tooth-rich oral disk, by direct analogy with the feeding mode documented across the genus and with its own exceptional mouth morphology as described in the original paper. No stomach-content or isotope study specific to this species has been published.
In the aquarium, hobby sources describe it as predominantly herbivorous, readily taking vegetable-based foods, blanched vegetables, and algae wafers, alongside biofilm grown on driftwood and rockwork — husbandry practice that mirrors the presumed wild diet rather than a documented one.
Mating
No formal study of courtship or pre-spawning behavior in Baryancistrus hadrostomus has been published. Hobby reports note pronounced territoriality in mature individuals, particularly toward conspecifics and other Baryancistrus species, which — by analogy with better-studied cave-spawning Hypostominae — likely reflects competition for the crevice or cave sites used as spawning refuges. Males' broader heads and longer pectoral spines, noted by aquarists, are consistent with this territorial, cave-guarding pattern seen elsewhere in the genus, but no direct field or aquarium observation of pairing behavior for this species has been documented here.
Breeding
No confirmed captive-breeding account or field reproductive data for Baryancistrus hadrostomus have been located. By analogy with related Baryancistrus and other rheophilic Hypostominae, reproduction is expected to follow the typical loricariid cave-spawning mode: eggs laid in a cavity or under a rock, guarded by the male until the fry disperse. Clutch size, incubation period, and fry-rearing details remain undocumented for this species. Data sparse.

Baryancistrus hadrostomus has circulated in the ornamental trade for longer than it has held a valid scientific name, under the L-number designations L219, L323, and L324 — all now recognized as this single species. Hobby sources describe it as an attractive but demanding fish for larger, well-established aquaria: strong water movement, high oxygenation, warm water (around 79–86 °F), and a rocky or driftwood-furnished substrate that mimics its rapids habitat are recommended, along with excellent water quality typical of Guiana Shield black- and clearwater species.
Its size (reported up to around 12 in) and marked territoriality toward conspecifics and other Baryancistrus mean it is generally regarded as unsuitable for inexperienced keepers or smaller community setups; single specimens or well-spaced groups in large tanks are the usual recommendation. As an algae/biofilm grazer it benefits from driftwood to graze on and a diet supplemented with vegetable matter and algae-based foods alongside protein.
Conservation
Baryancistrus hadrostomus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. As a range-restricted rheophile tied to specific rapids and waterfalls of the Jari/Iratapuru drainage, it shares the general vulnerability of Guiana Shield rock-dwelling loricariids to hydropower development and habitat alteration, though no species-specific threat assessment or population survey has been published. Its continued presence in the aquarium trade under L219/L323/L324 indicates an ongoing wild collection pressure of undetermined scale. No CITES listing applies to this species.
