Taxonomy & naming
Baryancistrus micropunctatus was described by Renildo Ribeiro de Oliveira, Lúcia Rapp Py-Daniel, and Osvaldo Takeshi Oyakawa in 2019, in Copeia (now Ichthyology & Herpetology), volume 107, issue 3, pages 481–492, alongside a second new species, Baryancistrus hadrostomus. Both were described from the Jari River (rio Jari), a major right-bank tributary of the lower Amazon that forms part of the Pará–Amapá state border in Brazil — the paper notes these were the first Baryancistrus species described from a river draining the Guiana Shield rather than the more commonly sampled Xingu or Tapajós systems. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognizes B. micropunctatus as a valid species.
The holotype, INPA 6042, is a specimen of 6 in standard length collected in the rio Jari, municipality of Almeirim, Pará state, Brazil. The genus name Baryancistrus combines the Greek barys (heavy) and agkistron (hook), a reference to the genus's robust interopercular odontodes. The specific epithet micropunctatus combines the Latin micro (small) and punctatus (dotted, spotted), describing the fine small dots that cover the entire body of the species — the character the original description uses to separate it from its closest congener.
The original description notes that B. micropunctatus has a color pattern similar to that of B. longipinnis, a species from the Tocantins River basin, but the two are separated geographically (Jari vs. Tocantins drainages) and by details of spotting and fin coloration. In the aquarium trade the species circulates under the L-number L319, assigned before its formal scientific description, and is sometimes sold as the "Small Spotted Snowball Pleco."
Morphology
The holotype measures 6 in SL (about 6 in), and paratypes range from roughly 5 in to 6 in SL, putting the known maximum size for the species at approximately 6 in SL. Like other Baryancistrus, B. micropunctatus has the heavily armored body typical of Hypostominae plecos: overlapping bony lateral plates, a flattened head, and a ventral, sucker-like oral disc adapted for gripping rock in fast current.
The defining external character is coloration: the body is covered in numerous small, fine dots — markedly smaller and more numerous than the bolder spotting seen in some other Baryancistrus — giving rise to both the scientific epithet and the "Small Spotted" trade name. Fin colour and the extent of dark pigment on the fin membranes are among the characters the original description uses, together with body spotting pattern, to separate B. micropunctatus from the superficially similar B. longipinnis.
No published data address sexual dimorphism in this species specifically; by analogy with other Baryancistrus, mature males likely develop somewhat more odontode growth on the pectoral fins and cheeks than females, but this has not been documented for B. micropunctatus.
Habitat
Baryancistrus micropunctatus is known only from the Jari River (rio Jari) basin, along the Pará–Amapá border in the Amazon basin of northern Brazil. The Jari drains ancient Guiana Shield geology and is characterized by long stretches of rapids and cataracts over exposed bedrock and boulder substrate, punctuated by clearer, faster-flowing reaches — the high-oxygen, high-current habitat typical of rheophilic Hypostominae plecos.
As is common for recently described rheophilic loricariids from remote Amazonian tributaries, the original description does not report detailed water chemistry (temperature, pH, hardness) for the type locality. By analogy with other Guiana Shield and Amazon rapids-dwelling Baryancistrus, the species almost certainly experiences warm (upper-20s °C), soft, slightly acidic to neutral, well-oxygenated water over rock and boulder substrate. Specific limnological data for the Jari rapids where this species was collected have not been published.
Feeding
No dietary studies have been published for Baryancistrus micropunctatus specifically. By analogy with other Baryancistrus and with rheophilic Hypostominae generally, the species is presumed to be primarily a periphyton grazer — using its ventral sucker-mouth to rasp the biofilm of algae, diatoms, and associated microorganisms that coats exposed rock in fast-flowing, well-lit river channels. Some Baryancistrus species also take invertebrate material incidentally while grazing, but this has not been confirmed for B. micropunctatus. Gut-content analysis for this species has not been published.
Mating
No courtship or reproductive behaviour has been documented for Baryancistrus micropunctatus in the wild or in captivity. By analogy with other cave-spawning Hypostominae, males of Baryancistrus species are thought to claim and defend rock crevices or cavities in rapids as spawning sites, with females visiting to deposit eggs — but this has not been observed or recorded for B. micropunctatus itself. Data sparse.
Breeding
No breeding records — wild or captive — have been published for Baryancistrus micropunctatus. The species has not been reported as commercially bred; specimens reaching the aquarium trade under the L319 designation are understood to be wild-collected from the Jari River. Clutch size, incubation period, and parental care are undocumented for this species. Data sparse.
In the aquarium
Baryancistrus micropunctatus is available in the aquarium trade in limited numbers under the L-number L319, sold under trade names including "Small Spotted Snowball Pleco," and is collected from the Jari River rather than captive-bred. At a modest maximum size of roughly 6 in SL, it is more manageable in a home aquarium than some larger Baryancistrus species that exceed 8 in.
No peer-reviewed husbandry data exist for this species, but by analogy with other rheophilic Baryancistrus kept in the hobby, it is expected to need strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, warm temperatures, and a well-oxygenated, algae-productive setup with driftwood and smooth rock to graze on and hide among. As a wild-collected rapids specialist, it likely does poorly in stagnant or poorly filtered tanks. Prospective keepers should treat any specific temperature, pH, or feeding regimen as unverified until tested husbandry reports are published.
Conservation
Baryancistrus micropunctatus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. Its known range is restricted to the Jari River basin on the Pará–Amapá border, an area where large-scale hydroelectric development (including the Santo Antônio do Jari dam) has already altered stretches of the river's flow regime. Rheophilic loricariids adapted to a rapids and cataract microhabitat, like B. micropunctatus, are inherently vulnerable to impoundment, which converts fast, oxygenated rock habitat into still, siltier reservoir conditions.
Ongoing collection for the aquarium trade under the L319 designation adds a secondary, currently unquantified pressure. No population trend data, protected-area coverage, or formal threat assessment have been published for this species. Given its narrow known distribution and the documented hydroelectric activity in the Jari basin, a formal IUCN assessment would be valuable for tracking its conservation status.
