An ancient loricariid of the Tocantins rapids, Baryancistrus longipinnis has the misfortune of inhabiting one of the most heavily dammed river basins in Brazil. The construction of the Tucuruí dam alone erased more than a third of its known area of occupancy, and a planned waterway development may eliminate the remainder — which is why the IUCN lists it as Endangered. It is rarely seen in the hobby, seldom studied, and running out of river.

Taxonomy & naming

Baryancistrus longipinnis was originally described by Kindle in 1895 in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences (volume 8, article 9 [for 1894], page 255), from type material collected at Troceira (now Trocará) on the Rio Tocantins, Pará State, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Baryancistrus longipinnis, with the species having previously been placed in Hemiancistrus (as Hemiancistrus longipinnis Kindle, 1895) and later in Parancistrus (as Parancistrus longipinnis), before the combination with Baryancistrus was established by Isbrücker in 1980 and not since revised.

Baryancistrus was erected by Rapp Py-Daniel in 1989 to accommodate a group of large, rheophilic Hypostominae with notably heavy ancistrine spines and a distinctive dorsal-fin membrane. The genus is placed in subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Ancistrini (Armbruster, 2004). Baryancistrus is most familiar to hobbyists through the ornamentally spectacular members such as B. xanthellus (L018/Gold Nugget Pleco) and B. demantoides (L200/Green Phantom Pleco), but B. longipinnis has no widely recognised hobbyist code and is rarely encountered in trade.

No L-number has been assigned to B. longipinnis. The common Portuguese names Acari and Cascudo are generic regional terms applied to many armoured catfishes in Brazil and carry no taxonomic precision.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 8 in standard length (the IUCN assessment records individuals up to 8 in SL per personal observation by R.R. Oliveira). FishBase records a maximum total length of 8 in, placing this species in the mid-sized range for the genus. The body is armoured with overlapping bony scutes and a typically robust Baryancistrus profile — relatively broad and depressed anteriorly, tapering toward the caudal peduncle.

Coloration is incompletely documented in the literature; available photographs show a dark brown to near-black base with variable pale spotting. The genus name alludes to the heavy, thickened interopercular spines ('barys' = heavy in Greek), and B. longipinnis shares the prominent pectoral-fin spines and robust odontodes characteristic of Baryancistrus. The epithet 'longipinnis' (long-finned) suggests the dorsal fin is proportionally extended relative to other members of the genus or its former placement.

Sexual dimorphism is not formally described in published literature for this species. Based on related Baryancistrus, breeding males likely develop elongated odontodes on the pectoral spines and interopercular region, and females become noticeably wider when gravid.

Habitat

Baryancistrus longipinnis is endemic to the Rio Tocantins basin and Rio Parauapebas (a tributary draining into the Itacaiúnas system, itself a Tocantins tributary), in Pará State, Brazil. The species inhabits pedrais — extensive rocky outcrops with rapids and fast-flowing channels — and is strictly associated with lotic environments characterised by clean, oxygenated water rushing over bedrock and boulders. The IUCN assessment notes that the species exclusively inhabits stretches of rapids and rock outcrops.

The Tocantins is a large river system within the Cerrado-Amazon transition zone. Prior to damming, extensive rapids and falls characterised the lower Tocantins; many of these were the natural habitat of B. longipinnis. The Pedral do Lourenço — a specific bedrock rapids complex in the lower Tocantins — was identified in a 2021 survey (Biota Neotropica) as the only site where B. longipinnis was recorded, suggesting the species' range has already contracted significantly from its historical distribution. A reference survey of 27 points across the Tocantins-Araguaia basin found B. longipinnis only at this single locality.

Feeding

Like other Baryancistrus, B. longipinnis is presumed to be an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. The genus is generally characterised by broad oral discs equipped for scraping diatoms, algae, cyanobacteria, and the associated organic detritus from hard rock surfaces in strong current. Field studies of related Baryancistrus indicate a diet dominated by algae and plant-derived organic matter, with a smaller invertebrate component.

In the aquarium, related species accept algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and blanched vegetables such as courgette and cucumber. Live and frozen invertebrates (bloodworm, brine shrimp) supplement the diet without dominating it. Like all Baryancistrus, strong flow over flat stones is the preferred feeding environment — the sucker-mouth is designed for high-energy, rock-face grazing rather than bottom-feeding in still water. Access to smooth stones or slate provides appropriate feeding substrate.

No specific feeding observations exist for B. longipinnis in captivity, as the species is virtually absent from the hobby.

Mating

Reproductive biology in B. longipinnis has not been studied or documented in captivity or in the field. The IUCN assessment notes that, based on knowledge of the family, females are estimated to reach sexual maturity at approximately three years of age, with a generation time of 11.5 years — a figure central to the Endangered classification calculation.

Based on related Baryancistrus, including the better-studied B. xanthellus and the genus's broader Ancistrini affinity, the mating system is likely to involve male territorial competition around rock crevices or overhangs, with males developing more pronounced odontodes during the reproductive season. Females in spawning condition show pronounced abdominal swelling. The combination of a relatively long generation time and strictly rheophilic habitat makes any population disruption — from sedimentation, altered flow, or habitat fragmentation — disproportionately damaging to recruitment.

Breeding

No captive breeding has been documented for Baryancistrus longipinnis, and field data on reproduction are absent from published literature. The IUCN assessment simply states that reproductive studies are needed and lists this as a research priority. For the genus, it is known that B. xanthellus and closely related Gold Nugget plecos are cave-spawners with paternal brood care, and B. longipinnis is assumed to follow the same pattern: adhesive eggs deposited in a tight rock crevice, guarded and fanned by the male until fry emerge and disperse.

Given the species' rarity in both the wild and captivity, and the extreme rheophilic specialisation of its natural habitat, captive breeding is an unrealistic prospect under normal hobby conditions. Recreating the fast, clean, warm water and rocky substrate of the Tocantins pedrais demands significant infrastructure. Its long generation time and the ongoing loss of wild habitat make ex-situ conservation breeding a matter of genuine urgency, though no such programme is known to exist.

In the aquarium

Baryancistrus longipinnis is not a fish routinely available through the ornamental trade, and potential keepers should not expect to find it in mainstream shops. The species carries no widely recognised L-number, is not sourced commercially at scale, and is subject to Brazilian export restrictions for wild-caught freshwater fish from threatened habitats. Any specimen offered for sale should be scrutinised for legal provenance.

For those who do encounter or maintain this species, husbandry should closely follow the demands of other large Baryancistrus: a large aquarium (105 US gal or more) with powerful flow, smooth rocks and flat slate for rasping, excellent filtration, and regular water changes. Temperature 75–86 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and moderate to low conductivity are appropriate parameters for a Tocantins-origin pleco. The species is unlikely to tolerate the warm, soft, blackwater conditions of a Xingu biotope; the Tocantins is a whitewater system with higher conductivity and less acidic water than the Xingu.

Given the Endangered status and the extreme range contraction already documented, acquiring wild specimens of B. longipinnis raises serious ethical considerations. There is an argument that any individuals that can be secured and maintained in captivity have conservation value as potential founders for ex-situ programmes, but this requires co-ordination with Brazilian conservation authorities.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Baryancistrus longipinnis as Endangered (EN, criterion A4ac) in an assessment dated 18 May 2022 and published by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) in 2024. The assessment was driven by a calculated reduction in area of occupancy (AOO) of at least 50% over three generation lengths — approximately 35 years — incorporating past and projected future losses.

The Tucuruí Hydroelectric Dam, completed in the 1980s and one of the largest dams in the world, directly inundated approximately 170 mi² of the species' AOO — equivalent to 37% of the total calculated AOO of 460 mi². This extirpated the populations that occupied those rapids permanently. The remaining range has been further fragmented by the altered flow and sedimentation regime downstream of the reservoir.

A second, prospective threat is the proposed Tocantins-Araguaia waterway project, which includes the dynamiting and removal of a 27 mi section of rapids in the Tocantins immediately upstream of the Tucuruí reservoir — the last known section of Tocantins rapids supporting B. longipinnis. If this hydrological modification proceeds, the species' occurrence in the Rio Tocantins proper could be eliminated entirely, leaving only the Rio Parauapebas population. The IUCN assessment recommends that intact rapids stretches in the Tocantins basin be formally protected as priority conservation units, and that ecological requirements and reproductive biology of the species be urgently studied. As of the most recent surveys, B. longipinnis is also used for subsistence food by riparian communities — an additional localised pressure.
