Taxonomy & naming
Baryancistrus demantoides was formally described by Werneke, Sabaj Pérez, Lujan and Armbruster in 2005 in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 3, number 4, pages 533–542). The type locality is the Río Ventuari near an ornamental fish market, at 4.07565°N, 66.89285°W, Amazonas state, Venezuela. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Baryancistrus demantoides Werneke, Sabaj Pérez, Lujan & Armbruster, 2005 as the valid combination.
The L200 code requires clarification: the DATZ L-number L200 was originally applied to a green, spot-bodied pleco from Venezuela widely identified as this species, and PlanetCatfish explicitly assigns L200 to B. demantoides (the 'Hi Fin Green Phantom'). There is sometimes confusion in the hobby literature because L200 has also been used informally for an unidentified Hemiancistrus sp. from similar Orinoco drainages; however, PlanetCatfish and the primary literature place B. demantoides as the accepted identity for L200. The 'Hi Fin' variant name refers to the elongated dorsal fin that is the most striking morphological feature of the species.
B. demantoides was described alongside Hemiancistrus subviridis (the 'blue phantom', L128) in the same paper — two uniquely coloured Venezuelan loricariids from the same drainage, now separated into different genera. The genus Baryancistrus — meaning 'heavy Ancistrus' (Greek barys, heavy + agkistron, hook) — groups several large Hypostominae from the Amazon and Orinoco with robust bodies and specific rock-dwelling habits.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 6 in SL, making B. demantoides a medium-sized pleco — larger than most Hypancistrus but considerably smaller than the large Panaque royals. Body form is stout and robust for the genus, with a broad, flat ventral surface and the typical loricariid scute armour covering dorsal and lateral surfaces.
The diagnostic character distinguishing B. demantoides from all other Ancistrini is the connection between the dorsal fin and the adipose fin by an expanded posterior section of the dorsal-fin membrane — this sail-like structure is unique in the tribe and immediately recognisable in the field or aquarium. Body coloration is a dark greenish-black to olive-green ground overlaid with dense golden-yellow spots; spots are larger and more numerous on the anterior body and head, diminishing toward the tail. The dorsal and pectoral fins share the spotted pattern. Juveniles are conspicuously spotted; adults may show a slight reduction in spot contrast. Occasional 'blue' colour variants are reported in the hobby, possibly reflecting locality-based variation or captive lighting artefacts.
The species also has more than 30 teeth per jaw ramus (FishBase, ref. 56038) — an unusually high count for Baryancistrus — and golden-yellow spots are confined to the anterior portion of the body. These features, combined with the dorsal–adipose membrane connection, form the complete diagnostic suite. Sexual dimorphism is subtle: males may develop odontodes along the pectoral spine and cheeks; females in breeding condition are broader-bodied.
Habitat
Baryancistrus demantoides occurs in the upper Orinoco drainage of Venezuela, with confirmed records from the Río Ventuari and Río Guapuchi — both right-bank tributaries of the upper Orinoco in Amazonas state. FishBase records the distribution as 'upper Rio Orinoco drainage in Venezuela'; PlanetCatfish adds the Orinoco mainsteam, upper Orinoco, Ventuari, and Guapuchi systems to the range.
Critically, the species occurs 'exclusively among granite rocks in flowing water' (FishBase, ref. 56038). This is a highly specific microhabitat — the exposed granite outcrops and boulder fields (known locally as 'raudales' or rapids) that characterise the Guiana Shield portions of the upper Orinoco. These habitats have fast-flowing, highly oxygenated, warm, and very soft acidic water: pH typically 5.5–7.0, conductivity often below 20 µS/cm, temperature 75–81 °F. The blackwater conditions of the upper Ventuari produce tannin-stained, clear, low-nutrient water with extremely limited suspended sediment.
This specialised rock-dwelling habit is ecologically significant: B. demantoides is not a generalist that can occupy silty or sandy substrates or slow-moving waters. It is a rheophilic, lithodependent species whose entire ecology is structured around the physical characteristics of Guiana Shield granite rapids.
Feeding
Baryancistrus demantoides is a grazer and omnivore rather than a strict xylophage. On the granite rapids it inhabits, food resources are primarily periphyton — the dense algal and biofilm communities (diatoms, cyanobacteria, green algae, associated bacteria, and organic detritus) that grow on submerged rock surfaces in well-lit, fast-flowing water. The robust teeth and powerful suction disc are adapted for scraping these tightly adherent mats from smooth and rough granite surfaces.
In the aquarium, the dietary regime should reflect this algal emphasis. A regular supply of blanched vegetables — courgette (zucchini), cucumber, spinach, sweet potato — along with high-quality sinking algae wafers and spirulina-based foods forms the dietary core. The species also accepts sinking pellets and frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp; these can supplement the diet but should not replace the vegetable-based base. Unlike the Panaque/Panaqolus clade, this species does not require — or particularly benefit from — large quantities of driftwood for dietary purposes, though wood can be present for cover.
The spotted body pattern and granite-rock specialist ecology are consistent with a high-light, fast-water habitat where periphyton production is substantial. Aquarium lighting should be moderate to high; LED fixtures that promote algae growth on rocks and décor will be actively grazed and represent a natural food subsidy.
Mating
Courtship behaviour in B. demantoides has been observed in captivity, though successful reproduction is rare and PlanetCatfish lists no confirmed breeding reports. In rock-specialist Loricariidae, males typically establish and defend crevices between boulders or within rocky overhangs as spawning sites, displaying to rivals and prospective mates with erected fins and lateral posturing.
Males of this species develop more prominent odontodes on the pectoral spine and interopercular region during the breeding season. Gravid females are noticeably broader in the mid-body region when viewed from above. Conditioning the pair on high-quality varied foods, providing stable and appropriate water chemistry (soft, acidic, warm, high-flow), and offering rocky crevice structures appear to be the key prerequisites for stimulating reproductive behaviour. The species' restricted wild habitat — fast, oxygenated granite-rock rapids — makes replicating the environmental cues challenging in standard aquarium setups.
Breeding
Baryancistrus demantoides has not been confirmed captive-bred in any documented report on PlanetCatfish as of mid-2026, despite being one of the more popular medium-sized Orinoco plecos in the trade. The combination of strict water quality demands (very soft, acidic, highly oxygenated), specific microhabitat requirements (rocky crevices with flow), and sensitivity to suboptimal conditions makes successful breeding difficult without dedicated effort.
The expected reproductive mode, based on related Baryancistrus species and the general Hypostominae pattern, is cave spawning — eggs deposited in a rocky crevice or tight cavity, guarded and fanned by the male. Incubation would likely be 5–8 days at 77–79 °F. Fry are expected to be miniature adults, initially consuming remaining yolk before transitioning to fine algae and soft foods.
Aquarists aiming to breed this species should focus on replicating the Ventuari water conditions: pH 6.0–6.8, near-zero hardness (conductivity below 100 µS/cm), temperature 75–79 °F, and strong, varied flow — ideally with powerheads or a spray bar system that generates turbulent surface agitation. A cycled, biologically mature tank is essential; this species is intolerant of ammonia and nitrite and sensitive to elevated nitrate over time.
In the aquarium
The green phantom pleco is one of the most visually striking medium-sized plecos available to hobbyists, and demand in the ornamental trade is high relative to supply — nearly all specimens are wild-caught imports from Venezuela. The species commands a premium price that reflects both its appearance and its collection difficulty from remote Ventuari rapids.
A single adult requires a minimum of 55–65 US gal; a pair or small group needs 400+ litres. The tank must be furnished with smooth and rough rocks piled to create crevices, overhangs, and enclosed spaces — granite or similar inert rocks are ideal. Current is important: powerheads or a high-flow filter outlet should create vigorous circulation across at least part of the tank. Water must be very soft and acidic (pH 6.0–7.0, hardness below 8 dGH, conductivity below 200 µS/cm), and temperature maintained at 75–81 °F. Weekly partial water changes of 30–40% are advisable to maintain quality.
Driftwood can be present as décor and may be lightly rasped but is not a dietary necessity for this species. Plants in fast-flow setups are challenging; hardier species (Anubias, Bolbitis, java fern attached to rock) are compatible. Tankmates should be robust and from the same blackwater, fast-water Orinoco drainage: Pterophyllum, medium-sized characins, Mesonauta cichlids, and other Loricariidae from similar habitats. Avoid mixing with the more aggressive larger plecos or with species requiring hard, alkaline water.
Acclimation of newly imported wild specimens requires patience: the transition from pristine Venezuelan blackwater to tap-water-based aquaria is significant. Gradual drip acclimation, immediate quarantine, and careful monitoring for disease (particularly ich and internal parasites common in wild Ventuari fish) are essential protocols.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Baryancistrus demantoides as Near Threatened in August 2019, under criteria B1b(iii)+2b(iii) — a range-restricted species with continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. This is the only one of the three species covered in this batch to receive a non-LC designation, and the elevation to NT reflects genuine concern.
The assessment specifically flags the species' narrow geographic range (upper Orinoco and Ventuari in Venezuelan Amazonas state) and dependence on intact, fast-flowing granite rapids — a habitat type that is directly threatened by hydroelectric development. The Ventuari and upper Orinoco region has been the subject of proposed and constructed hydropower projects; any impoundment upstream of the granite rapids would dramatically alter the flow regime, sediment dynamics, and water chemistry of the microhabitat on which B. demantoides depends.
A second major pressure is the ornamental fish trade. The species is highly sought after in global markets; collection for export from the Ventuari is ongoing, and the remote location makes regulation difficult. Venezuela's ornamental fisheries regulatory framework has historically had limited enforcement capacity in this region. Trade pressures on a site-faithful, range-restricted species with no confirmed captive breeding represent a structural sustainability problem. Hobbyists purchasing this species should verify supplier provenance where possible and support efforts to establish captive breeding lines.
