Described in 2025 from the cataract reaches of the Rio Trombetas in northern Brazil, Baryancistrus quilombola is named in honour of the Quilombola communities — Afro-Brazilian descendants of escaped enslaved people who have lived along this river for centuries. A specialist of high-energy, clear-water rapids with rocky substrates, it has never entered the ornamental fish trade and faces potential habitat disruption from planned hydroelectric infrastructure in its basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Baryancistrus quilombola was described by de Oliveira and Rapp Py-Daniel in 2025 in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 23, issue 3, DOI: 10.1590/1982-0224-2025-0066), as one of two new Baryancistrus species from the Rio Trombetas basin. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises this as a valid species. With this description, the genus Baryancistrus comprises approximately ten valid species.

The genus name Baryancistrus derives from the Greek barys (heavy) and agkistron (hook), alluding to robust interopercular odontodes. The specific epithet quilombola is a noun in apposition — it does not modify the genus name but stands independently, honouring the Quilombola communities of the Rio Trombetas: Afro-Brazilian people descended from formerly enslaved individuals who established free agrarian settlements (quilombos) along this river. The first quilombo formally recognised by the Brazilian federal government was located within this very basin. No L-number has been assigned; the species is unknown in the ornamental trade.

The original description distinguishes B. quilombola from its congeners through a combination of characters — coloration, extent of dorsal-fin membrane, abdominal plate covering, mandibular tooth count, and relative fin sizes — rather than a single diagnostic character unique to the species.

Morphology

Adults reach a maximum recorded standard length of 9 in SL. Paratypes are deposited at INPA (INPA-ICT 52435, 4.5 in SL), collected from the Rio Trombetas at Oriximiná, Pará. The body follows the typical Baryancistrus plan: heavy loricariid armour, a broad, flattened head, and a ventrally positioned oral disc suited to life on hard substrates in fast current.

The fin formula includes 2 dorsal spines and 7 dorsal soft rays, with 4 anal soft rays. Beyond the diagnostic combination detailed in the original description, published morphological data for this recently described species are limited.

No sexual dimorphism data have been published for B. quilombola.

Habitat

Baryancistrus quilombola is known from the Rio Trombetas basin, Pará state, in the northeastern Amazon drainage of Brazil. The Rio Trombetas is a clear-water river draining ancient shield geology, flowing roughly northward to meet the Amazon mainstream near Oriximiná.

The original description places this species specifically in strong-energy cataracts with rocky substrates — the hard-substrate, high-velocity microhabitat typical of rheophilic Hypostominae. It is sometimes found syntopically with the already-described Baryancistrus isaaci at these rapids sites. No detailed data on water temperature, pH, conductivity, or depth have been published for the collection localities.

Feeding

No species-specific feeding data have been published for Baryancistrus quilombola. By analogy with other Baryancistrus and with Hypostominae from similar clear-water cataract habitats, the species most likely grazes on periphyton — the biofilm of algae, diatoms, and microbial mat that colonises exposed rock surfaces in fast-flowing Amazonian rivers. The oral disc morphology characteristic of the genus is well adapted to this scraping foraging mode.

Diet composition in the wild has not been investigated for this taxon.

Mating

No observations of mating behaviour have been made for Baryancistrus quilombola. The species is not kept in captivity, and no field observations of courtship or territorial behaviour have been published. Data sparse.

No breeding data are available for Baryancistrus quilombola. The species has not been bred in captivity, and no nest sites, clutch parameters, or parental behaviour have been documented. Data sparse.

In the aquarium

Baryancistrus quilombola is not kept in the ornamental aquarium hobby and has not been assigned an L-number. No husbandry records exist. The species inhabits high-energy clear-water cataracts and attains around 8.5 in SL — parameters that suggest, by analogy with other Baryancistrus, a need for strong water movement, well-oxygenated conditions, and smooth stone or slate substrate if it were ever maintained in captivity. No tested aquarium parameters are available and none should be assumed.

Conservation

Baryancistrus quilombola has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. Despite this, the species faces a documented conservation concern: the Cachoeira Porteira Hydropower Plant project on the Rio Trombetas has been re-examined by Brazilian authorities, raising serious concerns for the unique Amazonian biodiversity of the basin. The rapids habitats where B. quilombola occurs would be among the most directly affected by dam impoundment, which converts high-energy cataract habitat to still water, eliminating the rocky substrate microhabitat on which rheophilic Hypostominae depend.

The species does occur within a protected area, which provides some legal safeguard. However, the lack of any IUCN assessment means its population status and the spatial extent of its range remain formally undocumented. Given its recent description, restricted known range, and the active infrastructure threat to its habitat, monitoring of the Cachoeira Porteira project is relevant to the species' long-term persistence.
