Described in 2006 from the Río Huallaga at Tingo María, in Huánuco Department, Peru, Chaetostoma daidalmatos carries one of the higher threat ratings of any loricariid on the IUCN Red List: Endangered. Its entire confirmed distribution is pinned to a small section of river in one of the most heavily pressured valleys of the Peruvian Amazon foothills — a region where deforestation, agricultural colonisation, and decades of coca-cultivation disruption have transformed the landscape around its only known locality.

Taxonomy & naming

Chaetostoma daidalmatos was described by Salcedo in 2006 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 17, number 3, pages 208, Figures 1–2, 3a). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Chaetostoma daidalmatos Salcedo, 2006. No synonyms are recorded. The type locality with coordinates is Tingo María, Río Huallaga, 9°18'S, 76°00'W, Province Leoncio Prado, Departamento Huánuco, Peru.

The genus Chaetostoma belongs to the tribe Ancistrini of the subfamily Hypostominae within Loricariidae. The genus name derives from the Greek chaite (bristle-like hair, alluding to the interopercular odontodes) and stoma (mouth). The species epithet daidalmatos comes from the Greek daidalma, meaning intricate or skillfully crafted work, and likely refers to the detailed or ornate coloration of the type specimens.

A closely related species, Chaetostoma lexa (Salcedo, 2013), was described seven years later from the same Tingo María area, indicating that this locality harbours at least two congeners in very close proximity.

Morphology

Maximum recorded size is 6 in SL per PlanetCatfish. Body plan follows the Chaetostoma formula: strongly flattened, broad-headed, with the characteristic spatulate rubber-nose profile and a wide ventral oral disc. Flanks are covered with overlapping bony scutes; the abdomen is unplated. The specific epithet daidalmatos ("intricate work") suggests a patterned coloration in the type specimens, though detailed published colour descriptions from the original description are not reproduced in the sources reviewed here.

Moveable interopercular odontodes and strong pectoral fin spines are present, as in all Chaetostoma. These provide both defence and a handling hazard. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: males typically show broader heads, slimmer ventral profiles, and disproportionately large pelvic fins — the latter possibly functioning to direct or shield the sperm mass during fertilisation in fast-flowing water. Species-specific dimorphism data for C. daidalmatos are not published.

Habitat

The type locality, Tingo María on the Río Huallaga, lies in the upper Amazon basin at an altitude of approximately 2165 ft above sea level, in the zone where Andean rivers transition from steep highland streams to wider foothill channels. The Huallaga at this point is a moderately fast, sediment-bearing whitewater river draining the eastern Andes of Huánuco Department.

As a Chaetostoma, C. daidalmatos is presumed to occupy rocky or cobbly sections of the river where current is sufficient to maintain elevated dissolved oxygen and where hard surfaces support biofilm and algal growth. Andean foothill rivers in this altitudinal range typically run at temperatures of approximately 68–77 °F with near-neutral pH and moderate hardness from Andean mineral inputs — though specific physicochemical data from the type locality are not available in the sources reviewed.

The Tingo María area represents an extremely restricted locality. PlanetCatfish records the distribution as the Amazon, upper Amazon, Marañón, and Huallaga basins, but this broad basin-level listing likely refers to the Huallaga as a tributary within the larger system rather than implying the species is widespread across all those drainages.

Feeding

Chaetostoma daidalmatos is presumed to feed as other Chaetostoma do: grazing biofilm, diatoms, and encrusting algae from hard rocky substrates in fast-flowing sections of the Río Huallaga. The broad ventral disc and fine multi-cusped rasping teeth are well suited to this mode, allowing the fish to press firmly against smooth boulders and scrape off the periphyton layer.

No feeding observations specific to this species in the wild or in captivity are documented. In any hypothetical aquarium setting, a diet of algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables would be appropriate, mirroring the photoautotrophic base of the natural diet.

Mating

No mating observations for C. daidalmatos are recorded in captivity or the field. Extrapolating from Chaetostoma biology generally: males would be expected to establish and defend territories around crevices or cavities beneath flat stones in current-exposed areas, using odontode displays and lateral pressure to deter rival males. The enlarged pelvic fins of males in this genus are hypothesised to play a role in guiding sperm toward eggs during spawning in turbulent water.

Given the Endangered status and near-complete absence of this species from human collections, no information beyond genus-level inference is available.

Breeding

No captive breeding records exist for Chaetostoma daidalmatos. The species has no registered keepers and no spotter records on PlanetCatfish. It has not entered the ornamental trade in any documented capacity.

By analogy with genus-wide observations: spawning likely takes place in shallow crevices or under flat stones in sections of strong current; eggs are adhesive and attached to the roof or walls of the cavity; the male guards and fans the clutch through incubation. Fry, once mobile, would begin grazing biofilm immediately. All specifics — clutch size, incubation duration, fry development — remain unknown for this species.

In the aquarium

Chaetostoma daidalmatos is absent from the aquarium hobby. No trade records, keeper logs, or import records are known. Its Endangered status in Peru and the restricted, politically complex nature of its range — the Huallaga Valley has historically been a centre of coca production and law enforcement operations — make both legal collection and export highly improbable.

Hypothetically, husbandry would follow the requirements common to highland-foothill Chaetostoma: high dissolved oxygen maintained by vigorous flow, a rocky aquascape with cobbles and flat stones for grazing and shelter, temperature approximately 68–77 °F, and an algae-dominated diet. These fish are unforgiving of low oxygen and stagnant conditions. The moderate adult size of 6 in SL (approximately 6 in) would fit a 40–55 US gal tank if the flow requirement were met.

Given the conservation status, any future availability should come exclusively from captive-bred stock. Wild collection would be inappropriate and inconsistent with the IUCN Endangered assessment.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Chaetostoma daidalmatos as Endangered (EN) in April 2014. The Endangered listing reflects the species' highly restricted confirmed range — limited to the Tingo María area of the Río Huallaga in Huánuco Department, Peru — combined with severe and ongoing habitat degradation.

The Huallaga Valley has been one of the most heavily affected regions of the Peruvian Amazon. Decades of deforestation for subsistence and commercial agriculture, coca cultivation and eradication campaigns, and associated infrastructure development have transformed riparian zones and contributed to increased stream sedimentation and runoff. Sedimentation smothers the rocky substrates and biofilm communities on which Chaetostoma depend; elevated turbidity reduces photosynthetic algae growth; and chemical runoff from agricultural activities degrades water quality further.

The co-occurrence of Chaetostoma lexa in the same small area underlines how unusual and biologically significant the Tingo María river reach is for the genus — and how concentrated the extinction risk is at a single locality. The absence of any population size estimates and the complete lack of captive insurance populations make the species entirely dependent on the persistence of suitable habitat at its type locality. Targeted field reassessment is urgently needed.
