A slender whiptail catfish from the Huallaga drainage of Amazonian Peru, Loricariichthys stuebelii carries its eggs in one of the most distinctive ways in the family — the male incubates the entire clutch pressed against his greatly expanded lower lip, brooding in open water rather than retreating to a cave.

Taxonomy & naming

Loricariichthys stuebelii was formally described by Franz Steindachner in 1882, originally as Loricaria stuebelii, based on specimens collected from the Huallaga River in what is now the San Martín region of northern Peru. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current combination Loricariichthys stuebelii, with the original Loricaria stuebelii treated as a basionym.

The genus Loricariichthys belongs to subfamily Loricariinae, the whiptail catfishes — a group characterised by a greatly elongated, flattened body, a reduced number of scute rows compared to other loricariids, and a subterminal mouth suited to grazing soft substrates. Within Loricariinae, Loricariichthys is distinguished by the males' remarkable lip-brooding reproductive strategy, which sets the genus apart from most other loricariid genera that spawn in caves or crevices.

Ferraris (2003) included Loricariichthys stuebelii in his checklist of South American freshwater fishes, confirming its valid status within the genus.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 7.5 in standard length (SL), placing L. stuebelii among the mid-sized members of its genus. The body is highly depressed and elongated in the typical whiptail fashion, tapering to a slender caudal peduncle with a long filamentous extension on the upper lobe of the caudal fin. Bony scutes cover the flanks in the reduced arrangement characteristic of Loricariinae.

The most immediately striking feature of breeding males is the lower lip, which is greatly hypertrophied and capable of expanding into a broad, spongy pad when carrying eggs. Outside of the breeding season the lower lip returns to a more normal proportion, though even in non-breeding fish the lip tissue tends to be noticeably thicker than in related genera that lack lip-brooding behaviour.

Ground coloration is typically brown to tan, often with darker mottling or reticulation across the dorsum that helps break up the fish's outline against sandy or silty riverbeds. The ventral surface is paler. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.6, consistent with herbivorous and detritivorous feeding habits typical of the genus.

Habitat

Loricariichthys stuebelii is recorded from the upper Amazon drainage, specifically the Huallaga River basin in the San Martín region of northern Peru. The Huallaga is a major left-bank tributary of the Marañón, flowing through the Andean foothills and upper Amazonian lowlands before joining the main Amazonian system.

Like most Loricariinae, L. stuebelii is a benthic, demersal fish associated with the riverbed. Whiptails of this genus typically inhabit sandy or muddy-bottomed reaches with slower to moderate current, where they rest pressed against the substrate and feed on fine organic material and periphyton. FishBase categorises the species as freshwater and demersal, with no available field measurements of pH, temperature, or conductivity specific to this species at this time.

The genus Loricariichthys as a whole shows facultative air-breathing ability, an adaptation to warm, seasonally hypoxic water bodies such as floodplain lakes and slow channels — habitat types common in the Huallaga lowland system.

Feeding

The trophic level recorded for L. stuebelii (2.6 on FishBase) is consistent with a diet dominated by fine detritus, algae, diatoms, and associated microorganisms scraped from soft substrates. The subterminal, ventral mouth is well adapted to grazing the surface of sandy and muddy riverbeds rather than rasping hard wood or rock surfaces.

In the aquarium, whiptails of this subfamily accept sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and finely processed vegetable matter such as blanched courgette, cucumber, and peas. A settled layer of fine substrate that accumulates mulm and biofilm gives the fish a natural foraging surface and should be included in the setup. Live or frozen small invertebrates (bloodworm, tubifex) are accepted and can serve as conditioning food.

Mating

Loricariichthys stuebelii belongs to a genus renowned for an unusual reproductive strategy: lip-brooding by the male. Courtship follows patterns documented in related Loricariichthys species, with males establishing loose territories on open sandy or silty substrate. The male's lower lip plays a central role in attracting and accommodating a spawning partner.

Females are typically broader-bodied when gravid, and conditioning on varied foods with stable, clean water is important for bringing both sexes into reproductive readiness. Unlike cave-spawning loricariids, mating in this genus takes place in relatively open areas of the riverbed, with the female depositing eggs directly onto the male's prepared lip surface.

Breeding

The defining feature of Loricariichthys reproduction is paternal lip-brooding: after spawning, the male presses the egg mass against his hypertrophied lower lip and carries it there throughout incubation. The lip expands to accommodate the clutch, enveloping the eggs in a moist, well-oxygenated pouch of skin tissue. The male continues to swim and feed during incubation, brooding in the open rather than retreating to shelter — a striking contrast to the cave-guarding behaviour of most other loricariid genera.

This strategy has been documented in several Loricariichthys species and is considered the diagnostic reproductive synapomorphy of the genus. Incubation duration, clutch size, and fry-release timing specific to L. stuebelii are not available in the current literature, but related lip-brooding loricariids typically carry eggs for one to two weeks before the fry become free-swimming. Fry are miniature replicas of the adults and take benthic, detritivorous diets from the outset.

In the aquarium

Loricariichthys stuebelii is an uncommon species in the hobby, appearing only occasionally in specialist imports of Peruvian catfishes. Its slender adult size (to 7.5 in SL) makes it manageable in a well-planned aquarium of 30 US gal or more, with a footprint that accommodates the fish's benthic, open-water foraging behaviour.

A soft, fine-grained substrate — fine sand is ideal — is important, as the fish forages by pressing its ventral mouth against the riverbed. The tank should be lightly planted or furnished with driftwood and leaf litter to provide shelter and a natural biofilm source, but large areas of open sand should be left for the fish to patrol. Filtration should provide good water movement and oxygenation without creating turbulent surface currents incompatible with the fish's calm Amazonian river habitat.

Because no specific pH or temperature data are recorded for this species' collecting sites in the available literature, husbandry parameters are best guided by the general conditions of the upper Amazon system: soft to moderately hard water, slightly acidic to neutral pH, and tropical temperatures typical of lowland Peruvian rivers. Water quality should be maintained with regular partial water changes; accumulation of nitrate and fine organic waste is detrimental to all whiptail catfishes.

L. stuebelii is peaceful and can be kept with most non-aggressive community fish. Males of the genus can show mild territorial behaviour during the breeding season, but serious aggression is uncommon. The lip-brooding behaviour, if observed in captivity, is one of the most remarkable spectacles available in loricariid keeping.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Loricariichthys stuebelii as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting no evidence of significant population decline across its Huallaga basin range. The upper Amazon region of Peru faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and associated sedimentation of river systems, which can degrade the sandy and muddy benthic habitats that whiptail catfishes depend on. At present, however, these pressures have not been linked to declines in this species specifically.

L. stuebelii is rarely collected for the ornamental trade and is not a species with known captive-breeding populations in the hobby. Its conservation status will depend on the continued health of the Huallaga River drainage and the management of land-use pressures in the San Martín region.
