Discovered in the cool, fast-flowing mountain tributaries of Venezuela's Tuy River, Cordylancistrus nephelion is a rheophilic suckermouth catfish whose cloud-patterned flanks match the mist-fed streams of the Cordillera de La Costa. Known from fewer than a dozen specimens at description, it inhabits a river basin so altered by urban and agricultural development that the authors who named it considered it endangered from the outset.

Taxonomy & naming

Cordylancistrus nephelion was described by Francisco Provenzano and Nelson Milani in 2006, published in Zootaxa 1116: 29–41. The holotype (MBUCV-V-21800, 5 in SL) was collected from the Mesia River, a tributary of the Guare River within the Tuy River system, Miranda State, Venezuela (approximately 10°10′–10°12′N, 67°05′W). The original description was based on seven specimens.

The species is the third member of the genus Cordylancistrus described from Venezuela, after C. torbesensis from the Orinoco basin. Cordylancistrus is placed within subfamily Hypostominae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and GBIF both accept Cordylancistrus nephelion Provenzano & Milani, 2006 as valid. No L-number or official trade designation has been assigned, reflecting the species' rarity in the ornamental fish trade and its severely restricted, degraded native range.

Morphology

Adults reach a maximum recorded size of 5 in standard length (SL). Like other loricariids, the body is encased in overlapping bony scutes. The ground colour of the head and body is blackish to greenish-brown, overlaid with irregular white spots that the describers characterised as cloud-shaped — the basis for the species epithet. The abdomen is uniformly white, unpigmented. All fins carry whitish spots arranged in a pattern that simulates banding.

This coloration distinguishes C. nephelion from related Cordylancistrus species and from syntopic loricariids of the Tuy basin. The irregular, cloud-like pale spots on a dark background are the most immediately recognisable feature and the character directly referenced by the species name.

Dimorphism has not been formally documented for this species. In other loricariids of tribe Ancistrini, sexually active males typically develop elongated interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles); similar expression is expected in Cordylancistrus but has not been confirmed in the literature for C. nephelion.

Habitat

Cordylancistrus nephelion is known solely from the Tuy River basin of north-central Venezuela, a drainage of the Caribbean Sea. The Tuy system descends from the Cordillera de La Costa — the coastal mountain range running parallel to Venezuela's northern shore — and flows eastward through heavily populated Miranda State before reaching the Caribbean.

The collection sites are cool, fast-flowing foothill and mountain streams with transparent water, moderate to strong current, and substrates of stone, gravel, and sand — the archetypal rheophilic loricariid microhabitat. The recorded water temperature of 59–68 °F is strikingly cool for a South American loricariid, reflecting the species' montane elevation and the cool upwelling of the Cordillera de La Costa streams. Most Amazonian and Orinoco-basin loricariids inhabit waters 75–86 °F; this species is adapted to a fundamentally different thermal regime.

The Tuy basin is one of the most urbanised and industrially impacted river catchments in Venezuela, draining the greater Caracas metropolitan area and surrounding agricultural zones. The streams where C. nephelion was collected have been subjected to severe alteration — channelisation, extraction, agricultural runoff, and wastewater discharge — since the original 2006 survey.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study exists for Cordylancistrus nephelion. Based on the genus and the rheophilic, rocky-substrate habitat it occupies, C. nephelion is presumed to feed primarily by scraping algae and biofilm (periphyton) from rock and gravel surfaces, supplemented with fine detritus. This grazing strategy is typical of suckermouth catfishes that inhabit fast-flowing, well-lit rocky streams where epilithic algal growth is sustained by high light penetration and constant current-driven nutrient flux.

In captivity — to the very limited extent that this species has been maintained — a diet of algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables would constitute a reasonable approximation. The cool-water thermal requirements (59–68 °F) would need to be respected, ruling out most standard tropical aquarium setups without active chilling.

Mating

No mating behaviour has been documented for Cordylancistrus nephelion. The species is essentially unknown in captivity, and the original collection comprised only seven specimens — too few to characterise population structure or sex ratios in the wild.

In other loricariids of similar ecology — small-bodied, rheophilic, algae-scraping Ancistrini — males typically develop pronounced interopercular odontodes and establish territory around rock crevices during the reproductive season. Whether C. nephelion follows this pattern is unknown. The severely restricted range and rarity of this species make any behavioural observation in either field or captive context extraordinary.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Cordylancistrus nephelion has been reported in the reviewed sources. The combination of extreme rarity, a restricted and degraded range, and cool-water requirements that demand active chilling has apparently prevented any meaningful captive husbandry programme from being established.

By analogy with the broader Ancistrini clade, the species is presumed to be a cave or crevice spawner with some degree of paternal brood care — the predominant reproductive guild within this tribe. Without observations, however, even clutch size, incubation period, and larval behaviour remain uncharacterised.

In the aquarium

Cordylancistrus nephelion is not currently available in the ornamental fish trade and has rarely if ever been exported. Its combination of a geographically tiny, heavily degraded wild range and biological requirements that differ markedly from typical tropical loricariids — particularly the 59–68 °F temperature requirement — would make it a challenging species to maintain even if specimens were obtainable.

Any keeper who did acquire this fish would need to provide: a chilled tank maintaining 59–68 °F consistently (a dedicated aquarium chiller is effectively mandatory in temperate-climate fishrooms without natural cooling); strong, well-oxygenated current over a smooth rock and gravel substrate; and an algae-and-biofilm-based diet supplemented with vegetables. Standard tropical aquarium temperatures would likely cause chronic stress, immune suppression, and shortened lifespan.

Given the species' conservation status, the ethical pathway for any future captive presence would be a coordinated, institution-level breeding programme rather than commercial trade collection.

Conservation

Cordylancistrus nephelion has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. However, this administrative gap does not reflect the biological reality. The original describing authors — Provenzano and Milani (2006) — explicitly characterised the species as endangered in their publication, citing the extreme alteration of the Tuy River basin by human activity as an immediate threat to this and other endemic species in the catchment.

The Tuy basin drains the Caracas metropolitan region and is among the most degraded river systems in Venezuela: widespread sewage discharge, agricultural runoff, channel modification, and water extraction have severely reduced the quality and extent of the transparent, fast-flowing streams that C. nephelion requires. With a known range confined to a handful of Tuy tributaries in Miranda State — and a total known wild sample of seven specimens at the time of description — this species may constitute one of the most restricted loricariids on record.

No subsequent population surveys, range expansions, or positive update on its status have been located in the reviewed sources. The absence of a formal IUCN listing should be read as a gap in assessment infrastructure, not as an indication that the species is secure.
