Cordylancistrus pijao was described by Provenzano and Villa-Navarro in 2017 in Zootaxa (volume 4294, number 5, pages 522–530), from specimens collected at Quebrada Aguas Blancas and the mouth of the Cuide Blanco River, both tributaries of the upper Magdalena River drainage in Tolima department, Colombia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Cordylancistrus pijao Provenzano & Villa-Navarro, 2017.
The description was notable for two reasons beyond the species itself: it represented the first record of the genus Cordylancistrus from the Magdalena River basin, and it raised the number of Cordylancistrus species known from Colombia to three. The genus had previously been recorded from Pacific-slope and Lake Maracaibo drainages in Colombia and Venezuela, and this Magdalena discovery extended its biogeographic reach to the Atlantic-slope drainage system.
Cordylancistrus pijao is most similar to Cordylancistrus perijae and Cordylancistrus nephelion, but is distinguished from all congeners by a unique character: a fleshy keel — dark or black in colouration — overlying the posterior tip of the supraoccipital bone. This character is unambiguous in fresh or well-preserved specimens and serves as the primary diagnostic feature. The genus belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within the subfamily Hypostominae of Loricariidae.
The specific epithet pijao honours the Pijao people of Tolima department, a pre-Columbian indigenous nation renowned for their sustained and fierce resistance to Spanish colonisation during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The naming serves as a recognition of the cultural landscape of the region where the species was found.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 6 in standard length (SL), making C. pijao the largest of the three closely related Cordylancistrus species — somewhat larger than the congeners C. perijae (5 in SL) and consistent with the general size range of the genus. The body is strongly flattened and fully armoured with overlapping bony scutes, as expected for a rheophilic Ancistrini catfish adapted to current-swept rocky streams.
The diagnostic morphological character is the fleshy keel on the posterior supraoccipital: a soft tissue protrusion overlying the dorsal midline behind the skull roof, distinctly darker (dark to black) than the surrounding tissue. This is unique within Cordylancistrus and immediately separates C. pijao from its congeners.
The ventral surface is flattened for contact-grazing on hard substrate. The suctorial mouth is equipped with teeth appropriate for biofilm scraping. Pectoral spines are robust, as in other fast-water loricariids. Sexual dimorphism in the Ancistrini mode is expected — elongated interopercular and pectoral-spine odontodes more developed in breeding males — though specific data for C. pijao are not detailed in the available description summary.
Habitat
The type locality places Cordylancistrus pijao in Quebrada Aguas Blancas and the Cuide Blanco River, small to medium highland tributaries of the upper Magdalena River drainage in Tolima department, Colombia. Collection data document water temperatures of approximately 64 °F, pH around 8.1, and conductivity of approximately 192.8 µS — cool, slightly basic, and moderately mineralised water, consistent with the mineral weathering of the Andean foothill geology.
The substrate at the type locality included gravel and sand with moderate-sized rocks, with moderate current and riparian vegetation consisting of a mix of grazing areas and secondary forest. This represents a stream that has been influenced by land use — the surrounding landscape is agricultural and grazed — rather than pristine primary forest stream. The presence of C. pijao in such a modified environment may indicate some tolerance for low-level habitat degradation, though highly localised range limits the inferences that can be drawn.
Temperature of 64 °F is notably cool for a lowland tropical catfish, reflecting the altitude of the Andean foothills in the upper Magdalena drainage. The Magdalena River itself is one of the major rivers of Colombia, but the tributaries where C. pijao occurs are high-gradient mountain streams far from the warm, lowland main channel.
Feeding
Cordylancistrus pijao is assumed to be a biofilm and algae grazer, consistent with the Ancistrini feeding mode and the rocky, current-swept habitat it occupies. The suctorial mouth and associated tooth morphology are adapted for scraping periphyton — diatoms, cyanobacteria, filamentous algae, and the microbial mat — from hard substrate surfaces.
No published gut-content analysis exists for this species specifically. The gravel-and-rock-bottomed streams of the upper Magdalena foothills support a productive algal community on exposed rock surfaces, particularly in reaches with moderate or strong current and good light penetration. The slightly basic pH (8.1) and moderate conductivity at the type locality are consistent with productive diatom assemblages, suggesting a reliable food base for scraping loricariids.
Mating
No mating observations have been published for Cordylancistrus pijao. Sexual dimorphism consistent with the Ancistrini pattern — more pronounced interopercular and pectoral-spine odontodes in breeding males — is expected from the genus, though C. pijao-specific dimorphism data are not reported in available sources.
In fast-water Ancistrini generally, males patrol and defend rock crevice or cavity territories during the breeding season. Seasonal cues — shifts in temperature and flow tied to the Andean dry and wet season cycle — likely regulate reproductive activity in C. pijao, as they do in other highland Colombian loricariids.
Breeding
No captive breeding records have been published for Cordylancistrus pijao. The species has not been documented in the ornamental trade, carries no L-number, and was described only in 2017, leaving no time for established aquarium experience to accumulate.
By analogy with the broader Ancistrini, C. pijao is expected to be a cave or crevice spawner with paternal brood care: adhesive eggs deposited on the interior surface of a defended rocky cavity, with the male remaining on guard through incubation, fanning the clutch and removing dead eggs. Fry are miniature armoured versions of the adults and begin scraping substrate shortly after emerging.
Any future captive attempt would need to replicate the cool water conditions documented at the type locality — approximately 64 °F — and provide appropriate rocky cave structures in a well-oxygenated, fast-flow setup.
In the aquarium
Cordylancistrus pijao has not been documented in hobbyist collections and is not available in the ornamental trade. It is a scientific specimen known from a restricted range in the Colombian Andes, and any future interest from specialist catfish keepers would need to navigate both practical and ethical considerations around collection from a wild population whose conservation status remains unassessed.
From its documented ecology, the species would be a cool-water specialist requiring temperatures around 64 °F — outside the range of a standard tropical aquarium and requiring either a cold-water setup or active chilling. High flow, well-oxygenated water, and a rocky hardscape with sheltered crevices would be essential. Diet would centre on biofilm-rich surfaces supplemented with algae wafers, spirulina, and blanched vegetables.
At 6 in SL, C. pijao is medium-sized for a loricariid and would require a tank of at least 40–55 US gal for a single adult, with robust filtration appropriate for an armoured catfish's waste output. The species' affinity for slightly basic water (pH 8.1) distinguishes it from many soft-water Amazonian loricariids and may make it more tractable in harder water.
Conservation
Cordylancistrus pijao has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. The species was described in 2017 and remains absent from the Red List database as of 2026.
The available information raises quiet concern. The known range is extremely restricted — two streams in Tolima department, Colombia — and the surrounding landscape is modified by grazing and secondary forest, indicating ongoing land-use pressure. The broader Magdalena River basin is one of the most heavily impacted river systems in Colombia, subject to deforestation, agricultural runoff, dam construction, and urbanisation. Although the high-altitude foothill tributaries where C. pijao occurs are somewhat insulated from lowland pressures, riparian degradation, sedimentation, and seasonal flow alteration all pose risks to specialised rheophilic loricariids with highly localised distributions.
The authors of the original description noted that the highly localised range of C. pijao raises conservation concerns, even in the absence of a formal IUCN assessment. Documenting population size and range extent, and protecting riparian zones around the Quebrada Aguas Blancas and Cuide Blanco River, would be the most immediate conservation priorities.
