Small, clear-water, and carrying an LDA number earned in the German aquarium trade before its formal scientific description was complete, Hypostomus mutucae is one of the more compact members of its genus — topping out under 4.5 in standard length in a group where 12–17.5 in is routine. Native to the Rio Mutuca and its immediate neighbours in the upper Paraguay basin of Mato Grosso, this Least Concern species occupies the headwater streams draining the Brazilian cerrado, and its modest proportions and tractable water requirements have won it a small but appreciative following among suckermouth enthusiasts.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus mutucae was described by Jürgen Knaack in 1999, in the hobbyist journal Tropical Fish Hobbyist, volume 47 (number 11), page 102 — a relatively unusual venue for a formal species description, though ichthyologists have from time to time published valid taxa in widely read aquarium periodicals. The species entered the hobby trade prior to its formal description and was assigned the provisional code LDA010 by the German aquarium press, indicating it was documented in 'Das Aquarium' before a valid scientific name was available.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypostomus mutucae (Knaack, 1999) as the valid name. The original type locality is the Rio Mutuca, a tributary of the Rio Coxipó, itself a tributary of the Rio Cuiabá, in Mato Grosso State, Brazil — all within the upper Paraguay drainage. The species name is a toponym derived directly from the type-locality river.

Hypostomus is the largest genus in Loricariidae by species count, and H. mutucae represents one of the smaller-bodied members of that otherwise large-bodied assemblage. Its systematic placement within Hypostomus has not been revised since description, and no close phylogenetic relationships to other species have been formally tested.

Morphology

Hypostomus mutucae is a notably small Hypostomus, reaching a maximum of approximately 4.5 in standard length (SL) per FishBase records and 4 in SL per PlanetCatfish — one of the smallest confirmed adults in the genus. The body follows the standard Hypostomus plan: a robust, dorsoventrally flattened profile, the dorsal surface entirely armoured by keeled bony scutes in longitudinal series, and a soft, unplated ventral surface. The mouth is ventral and sucker-like, furnished with bicuspid teeth suited to rasping biofilm and fine organic material from rock and woody substrates.

The species was photographed and documented in the hobby press prior to formal description. Published images show a pattern consistent with a tan to brownish base coloration marked with darker spots or reticulations — a common Hypostomus colour scheme — but detailed fin-formula and meristic data are not available in the sources consulted for this article.

As with other small to medium Hypostomus, mature males likely develop more pronounced interopercular odontodes during the reproductive period, and conditioned females become noticeably broader-bodied when viewed from above. Genital papilla shape provides reliable sex differentiation in conditioned adults.

Habitat

Hypostomus mutucae is endemic to a small cluster of clear headwater streams in the upper Paraguay basin of Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The type locality, the Rio Mutuca, is a tributary of the Rio Coxipó, which flows into the Rio Cuiabá near the state capital Cuiabá. The broader distribution encompasses the Cuiabá River and its tributaries in the immediate vicinity.

These streams drain the southern Brazilian cerrado — a seasonally dry tropical savanna and one of the world's most biodiverse biomes. Cerrado streams are typically clear, low in suspended sediment, and slightly to moderately acidic, with sandy to rocky bottoms and gallery forest providing riparian shade. Water parameters at PlanetCatfish collection records indicate pH 6.2–7.6 and temperatures of 73–82 °F, with very low conductivity (approximately 2.36 µS) consistent with the chemically dilute character of cerrado headwaters. The upper Paraguay is a well-defined hydrological unit, and the restricted range of H. mutucae within it qualifies the species as a localised endemic rather than a widespread basin generalist.

Microhabitat preferences have not been formally studied, but the general Hypostomus association with hard substrates — rock, wood, and consolidated stream beds in moderate current — is the most probable niche.

Feeding

Hypostomus mutucae is a benthic grazer, using its ventral sucker-mouth to rasp periphyton, diatoms, green algae, and associated fine detritus from rock and woody substrates. The bicuspid dentition is well-suited to biofilm exploitation on hard surfaces in clear, fast-running streams, where algal production is driven by high light penetration.

In captivity, the species responds well to a diet centred on algae-based sinking wafers, spirulina supplements, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and sweet potato. Pieces of driftwood should be provided both as shelter and as a surface for biofilm colonisation. Occasional sinking protein-based pellets or frozen invertebrate foods can be offered as supplementary items. The species' small adult size means its waste production is relatively modest compared with the large Hypostomus typically encountered in the trade, making dietary management more straightforward in a well-filtered aquarium.

Mating

No detailed field or aquarium observations of courtship behaviour have been published for Hypostomus mutucae in the sources consulted. The small body size and tractable water parameters of this species have made it of interest to specialist catfish hobbyists, and its LDA designation reflects a degree of presence in the European aquarium trade, but breeding accounts in the hobby literature are sparse.

By analogy with other Hypostomus of similar size, males are expected to develop more pronounced odontodes during the reproductive period and to establish territorial claims around suitable spawning cavities. Females in breeding condition should show a broader dorsal profile and more swollen genital papilla. The clear, soft, warm cerrado stream conditions of the type locality offer a template for water-change and temperature-variation triggers that may help stimulate spawning in a species from a seasonally variable environment.

Breeding

Specific breeding records for Hypostomus mutucae are not available in the sources consulted. The general reproductive mode for Hypostomus involves cavity or burrow spawning: males select or excavate a sheltered site — a rocky crevice, a hollow in submerged wood, or a bank burrow — and provide paternal care by fanning eggs and guarding fry through early development.

For a species of this size (under 4.5 in SL), suitable spawning caves can be realistically provided in a moderately sized aquarium — clay pots on their sides, sections of PVC pipe, or purpose-built ceramic breeding tubes are standard approaches for small cavity-spawning loricariids. No clutch-size or incubation data specific to H. mutucae are available.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus mutucae occupies an unusual niche among Hypostomus kept by hobbyists: its small adult size (under 4.5 in SL) makes it manageable in a medium aquarium of 25–40 US gal or more, in contrast to the very large tanks demanded by most of its congeners. This has contributed to its appeal among specialist catfish keepers.

Water parameters derived from collection records suggest soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions: pH 6.2–7.6, temperature 73–82 °F, and very low conductivity consistent with cerrado headwaters. Clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong current and efficient mechanical filtration reflects the clear-stream conditions of its range. Driftwood and smooth rocks provide both shelter and grazing surface. Substrate can be sand or fine gravel.

The species is reported as peaceful and suitable for a community context with small to medium fish that do not require very different water chemistry. Intraspecific tolerance likely follows the standard Hypostomus pattern, with some territorial behaviour between males especially around caves and sheltered sites. Given the species' restricted wild range, wild-caught specimens should be acclimated carefully to avoid stress; tank-raised individuals, if available, are preferable.

No hobbyist-specific tankmate lists, breeding tank recipes, or long-term maintenance records were found in the sources consulted beyond the basic water-parameter and size data noted above.

Conservation

Hypostomus mutucae was assessed by the IUCN Red List on 7 November 2018 and assigned a status of Least Concern. The assessment notes a restricted but apparently stable distribution in the upper Paraguay basin — specifically the Cuiabá River and its tributaries in Mato Grosso — with no major threats identified at the time of evaluation. Clear headwater streams of the cerrado are the principal habitat.

While the Least Concern assessment reflects the best available information as of 2018, the cerrado biome is one of the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspots, subject to continuing rapid conversion for agriculture (principally soy, cotton, and cattle ranching) and associated hydrological changes including altered flood regimes, increased turbidity, and riparian deforestation. Any significant degradation of the Rio Mutuca and Rio Coxipó headwater network could adversely affect a species with as restricted a range as H. mutucae. Future reassessment incorporating updated land-use data would be valuable.
