Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia surinamensis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1965 in a paper reporting on characoid fishes collected in Suriname by H. P. Pijpers, published in Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde (volume 35, pages 101–126). The holotype is catalogued as ZMA 104221 at the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam. The type locality is Brownscreek, situated between the Saramacca and Suriname river systems in Suriname.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Moenkhausia surinamensis Géry, 1965, placed in the family Characidae, subfamily Stethaprioninae. The genus Moenkhausia Eigenmann, 1903 is a large, species-rich Neotropical characid group distributed broadly across South America. FishBase notes that M. surinamensis can be difficult to distinguish from Astyanax abramoides, reflecting the broader taxonomic complexity and phenotypic convergence within this lineage. No subspecies are currently recognised.
Morphology
Moenkhausia surinamensis is a moderately sized characid, recorded to a maximum of 4 in standard length (SL) in FishBase. Like most members of its genus, the body plan is the classic tetra template: laterally compressed, somewhat deep-bodied, with a forked tail, a small adipose fin, and the characteristic Characidae condition of lacking fin spines.
Colouration is predominantly silver, consistent with a fish of open, flowing water where reflective flanks offer camouflage. The species shares enough external similarity with Astyanax abramoides that even specialists have noted the difficulty in distinguishing them without close meristic examination — a situation common in the species-dense Neotropical characid fauna. Sexual dimorphism is not well documented in the published literature available for this species; females of related Moenkhausia are typically plumper when gravid.
Habitat
In the wild, Moenkhausia surinamensis occupies rapidly flowing freshwater in the river basins of the Guiana Shield. Its documented range spans the Saramacca, Suriname, Oyapock, Approuague, Comté, and Sinnamary drainages — a region of tropical lowland forest rivers in Suriname and French Guiana. These are generally well-oxygenated, often clear to tea-coloured (blackwater or clearwater) systems typical of the Guiana Shield, with soft to moderately mineralised water.
The preference for swift-flowing reaches distinguishes M. surinamensis somewhat from the more lentic or slow-water Moenkhausia that predominate in the Amazon basin. Substrate and microhabitat detail for this species are not well recorded in the primary literature, but Guiana Shield fast-water habitats typically feature sandy or rocky bottoms, submerged woody debris, and strong seasonal flood-pulse dynamics.
Feeding
Moenkhausia surinamensis is classified as an omnivore, with a trophic level of 2.5 recorded in FishBase — a value consistent with a generalist that consumes both plant material and small invertebrates. In the fast-flowing Guiana rivers it inhabits, the diet likely includes drifting invertebrates, insect larvae, surface-fallen insects, and available organic material, as is typical for riverine characids of this size.
In captivity, Moenkhausia species in general are undemanding feeders that accept quality flake and pellet foods readily alongside frozen or live supplements such as brine shrimp, Daphnia, or bloodworm. A varied diet supports condition and, where colour is present, helps maintain it.
Mating
Detailed behavioural accounts of courtship in Moenkhausia surinamensis are absent from the primary literature accessible for this species. Based on the general biology of the genus and the broader egg-scattering characid pattern, spawning is expected to involve open-water or plant-associated egg scattering, with males pursuing ripe females and fertilising eggs as they are released. No pair bond formation or territorial guarding is known for any Moenkhausia.
In related Moenkhausia kept by aquarists, spontaneous spawning occurs when fish are well conditioned and water quality is good, often triggered by a modest temperature drop simulating the onset of rains. Specific courtship signals for M. surinamensis have not been described.
Breeding
Moenkhausia surinamensis breeds in the egg-scattering mode typical of Characidae: eggs are released freely into the water column or deposited among fine-leaved vegetation, and both parents abandon them immediately after spawning. No parental care is provided at any stage. The eggs are small, and the adults will consume them and any hatched fry if not separated.
Breeder accounts specific to M. surinamensis are sparse. Aquarists working with closely related Moenkhausia typically set up a shallow breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and a mesh bottom to protect eggs from predation by the parents. Fry require very small initial foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods — before transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp. The species is not commonly bred in captivity and data on typical clutch sizes and incubation times under aquarium conditions are limited.
In the aquarium
Moenkhausia surinamensis is an infrequent visitor to the aquarium trade; more familiar congeners such as M. sanctaefilomenae (the red-eye tetra) and M. pittieri dominate the hobby market. When kept, it should be treated as a schooling species and maintained in groups of at least six, in a tank sized appropriately for an active fish approaching 4 in. A well-filtered aquarium with good water movement — reflecting its affinity for flowing water in the wild — suits it better than still, heavily planted conditions.
Water parameters for related Guiana Shield characids suggest soft to moderately hard water, mildly acidic to neutral pH, and tropical temperatures in the range of approximately 73–82 °F, though species-specific data for M. surinamensis in captivity are limited. The species is expected to be peaceful with tankmates of similar size. Its omnivorous diet and tolerance of standard flake foods make it straightforward to feed once acclimated.
Conservation
Moenkhausia surinamensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded by FishBase as dating from November 2020. The species occupies several river drainages across Suriname and French Guiana — a broad enough range that no immediate population-level threats have been identified. The Guiana Shield is one of the better-preserved tropical forest regions in South America, and its rivers remain largely intact compared to heavily deforested or dammed systems further south and west.
No specific conservation programmes target this species, and it is not listed on CITES appendices. The principal long-term risks to Guiana Shield fish communities are habitat degradation from artisanal and industrial gold mining (which causes severe mercury contamination and sedimentation of fast-water habitats), deforestation, and climate-driven changes to rainfall and flood regimes. For now, M. surinamensis benefits from the relative health of its range.
