Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus saramaccensis was formally described by Marinus Boeseman in 1968 in Zoologische Verhandelingen (Leiden), number 99, pages 58 and 78 (addendum), plate 2 (figures 1–4), based on specimens from the Saramacca River of Suriname. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts Hypostomus saramaccensis Boeseman, 1968 as the valid name with no synonyms on record. The FishBase identifier is 48177; PlanetCatfish lists the species under ID 3946.
Boeseman was one of the foremost authorities on Suriname loricariids during the mid-twentieth century, and H. saramaccensis is one of several Hypostomus he described from Guianan coastal rivers in that period. The genus Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803 is the largest in family Loricariidae and one of the most taxonomically complex, with new species still being added and the internal phylogeny unresolved for many regional clades.
Placement within the subfamily Hypostominae is consistent across current references. No synonyms have been recovered, and the species should not be confused with Hypostomus surinamensis — a name historically entangled with H. gymnorhynchus in the older literature but representing a different taxon.
Morphology
The published maximum size is 4.5 in standard length (SL), making H. saramaccensis a small member of its genus. The single photographic record on PlanetCatfish, taken from the Saramacca River, shows the typical Hypostomus body plan: a dorso-ventrally flattened, heavily armoured fish with overlapping bony scutes covering the flanks and back, a broad flattened head, and a ventral sucker-mouth.
Detailed meristic data — scale-row counts, fin-ray formulae, or a formal pigment description — have not been retrieved for this account from the available sources. The original description in Zoologische Verhandelingen (Leiden) No. 99 contains the morphological diagnosis, but that text was not accessed during research.
As in other Hypostomus, males are expected to develop evertible interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) that can be spread during agonistic or courtship encounters, but this has not been specifically documented for H. saramaccensis in the retrieved literature. The species is listed as a facultative air-breather on FishBase, a physiological adaptation widespread across the genus.
Habitat
The type locality is Feddiprati rapids on the middle Saramacca River, Suriname; precise coordinates were not retrieved. The Saramacca is a Guianan coastal river draining northward through Suriname to the Atlantic, rising in the Guiana Shield highlands. The rapids habitat at Feddiprati suggests the species is associated with higher-energy, well-oxygenated lotic environments — stony or rocky substrate with current, a microhabitat typical of many Hypostomus in South American river systems.
No field-measured temperature, pH, conductivity, or dissolved oxygen data have been retrieved for this species. The broader Guianan coastal drainage region encompasses both blackwater and clearwater rivers; without site-specific measurements the water chemistry experienced by H. saramaccensis at the type locality cannot be confirmed.

Feeding

Hypostomus species in general are suction-grazing aufwuchs feeders, using the ventral disc-mouth and fine multi-rowed teeth to rasp algae, diatoms, and biofilm from rock and woody substrates, with incidental ingestion of fine detritus and associated microinvertebrates.
The rapids habitat implied by the type locality (Feddiprati rapids) is consistent with the ecology of rock-grazing Hypostomus elsewhere in South America, where current-swept stone surfaces support dense epilithic algal mats. Specific gut-content or stable-isotope data for H. saramaccensis are lacking.
Mating

Water conditions approximating clean, well-oxygenated tropical freshwater would be a reasonable baseline.
Its Near Threatened status and single-river endemic range are relevant considerations for any hobbyist who encounters this species in trade.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus saramaccensis as Near Threatened (NT) on 14 January 2021. The Near Threatened designation signals that while the species does not currently meet thresholds for a threatened category, its situation warrants ongoing attention. The primary concern is range restriction: available data confine the species to the Saramacca River basin within Suriname's Guianan coastal drainages — a single river system.
The Saramacca River and its tributaries are subject to pressures from small-scale and artisanal gold mining (notably in the interior of Suriname), forest clearance, and associated sedimentation and mercury contamination that are well documented as regional threats to Guianan riverine biodiversity. The rapids habitat at the type locality is particularly sensitive to changes in flow regime, bed sediment, and water clarity.
