Taxonomy & naming

Hemiancistrus meizospilos was described by Cardoso and da Silva in 2004, published in Neotropical Ichthyology. The type locality is the Chapecó River near Coronel Freitas, Santa Catarina, Brazil, within the upper Uruguay River basin (approximately 26°55'S, 52°45'W). Additional type material came from the Rio do Ouro, also in Santa Catarina. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hemiancistrus meizospilos Cardoso & da Silva, 2004 as the valid name; older literature may place the species in the subfamily Ancistrinae, but current treatment assigns Hemiancistrus to Hypostominae.

The genus Hemiancistrus contains a number of white- or pale-spotted loricariids from South American fast-water systems, and several species are restricted to the cool subtropical drainages of southern Brazil and Uruguay. The 2004 paper by Cardoso and da Silva diagnosed H. meizospilos alongside H. votouro, distinguishing both from the related H. chlorostictus, H. megacephalus, and H. macrops by meristic and morphometric characters as well as colour pattern. H. meizospilos is separated from H. votouro primarily by its markedly larger spots — the key character behind the specific epithet.

Morphology

The body is covered in the loricariid armour of overlapping bony scutes, with the typical depressed head and ventrally positioned oral disc of an algae-scraping, current-adapted catfish.

The defining colour feature is the pattern of conspicuously large white or pale spots distributed across the dark body and fins. These spots are larger than those of any other white-spotted Hemiancistrus in the upper Uruguay drainage — the character that prompted the species epithet. Rocky substrate with ample hiding places — flat stones, caves, slate stacks — should be provided both for shelter and for grazing surface.

Group keeping is recommended over single-specimen keeping. Males may show territorial behaviour but casualties are unlikely if sufficient cover and space are provided. The species is generally peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates. Compatible companions include other cool-water fish from the southern Brazilian or Uruguayan ichthyofauna; standard tropical community fish that prefer warm water are not ideal tankmates for a species that thrives at subtropical temperatures.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hemiancistrus meizospilos as Least Concern (LC) in November 2018. The species' occurrence across the upper Uruguay basin in both Brazil and Uruguay provides a range broad enough that no immediate population-level threat was identified at the time of assessment.
