Named for the Votouro Indian Reserve in Rio Grande do Sul — where its type locality streams run — Hemiancistrus votouro is a spotted loricariid of the upper Uruguay River basin, a fastwater specialist clinging to rocky substrates in streams only two to five metres wide, and the southernmost member of a white-spotted Hemiancistrus assemblage that the 2004 revision of Cardoso and da Silva brought to light.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemiancistrus votouro was described by Cardoso and da Silva in 2004, in the same paper in Neotropical Ichthyology that established H. meizospilos. The type locality is the upper Uruguai basin in the vicinity of the Votouro Indian Reserve, Benjamin Constant do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (approximately 27°40'S, 52°50'W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Hemiancistrus votouro Cardoso & da Silva, 2004 as the valid name; older references may assign the species to subfamily Ancistrinae, but current treatment places Hemiancistrus within Hypostominae.

The species was described in a revision that also covered H. meizospilos and distinguished both from related white- or light-spotted loricariids including H. chlorostictus, H. megacephalus, and H. macrops. Hemiancistrus votouro is separated from H. meizospilos primarily by smaller spot size and by meristic and morphometric characters. The specific epithet is a noun in apposition: votouro is not a Latin or Greek word but rather the name of the Votouro people and their reserve, honouring the place of collection of the type series.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 5.5 in SL (FishBase), making H. votouro a medium-sized loricariid of similar build to its congener H. meizospilos. The body is covered in overlapping bony scutes, the head is depressed and broadly rounded, and the oral disc is ventrally positioned for scraping rock surfaces.

The colour pattern consists of pale or white spots on a dark body — shared with related Hemiancistrus species in the upper Uruguay basin, but with smaller spots than those of H. meizospilos. Sexual dimorphism is not specifically documented for H. votouro in available sources. Hemiancistrus votouro has no established presence in the aquarium trade and no common name. It is a scientific discovery fish — known primarily from museum specimens and the Uruguayan range-extension report — rather than a regularly encountered hobbyist species. Aquarists interested in the southern Brazilian Hemiancistrus complex may find H. meizospilos more readily sourced; H. votouro may occasionally appear through specialist collectors of South American catfishes.

Should specimens be obtained, requirements mirror those of related species from the same drainage: a spacious tank (minimum 47 in) with strong circulation and high dissolved oxygen, cool subtropical temperatures with seasonal fluctuation, rocky substrate providing both shelter and grazing surface, and a herbivore-focused diet. The documented habitat — streams two to five metres wide, alternating rapids and pools — suggests the species can adapt to moderate current rather than requiring the extreme turbulence of some torrent-dwelling loricariids.

Compatible tankmates should share the cool-water preference; standard tropical fish kept at 79–82 °F are unsuitable companions for a species from subtropical southern Brazil.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hemiancistrus votouro as Least Concern (LC) in November 2018. The documented range across the upper Uruguay basin in Brazil and into Uruguay provides a distribution broad enough that no immediate population-level threat was identified. The 2014 first record from Uruguay (Serra et al.) extended the known range southward, which in itself is a positive indicator of occurrence across multiple drainage systems.

The upper Uruguay basin faces the same suite of pressures as similar subtropical South American drainages: agricultural sedimentation, watershed conversion, and hydroelectric development altering flow regimes and fragmening river connectivity. A species occupying narrow, rocky hill streams is potentially sensitive to sedimentation that buries rock substrate and to flow alterations downstream of impoundments. Monitoring of this and related Hemiancistrus species in the upper Uruguay drainage would be valuable, but no targeted population studies are available in cached sources.
