Hemiancistrus punctulatus was described by Cardoso and Malabarba in 1999 in Comunicações do Museu de Ciências da PUCRS, Série Zoologia (volume 12, pp. 152, figures 7–8), from type specimens collected at Rio dos Sinos, João Fernandes beach, Caraá, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (approximately 29°45'S, 50°25'W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; species ID 65566) recognises Hemiancistrus punctulatus Cardoso & Malabarba, 1999 as the valid name.
The genus Hemiancistrus is a medium-sized Hypostominae group whose membership and boundaries have been revised repeatedly as molecular and morphological studies have redefined its limits. H. punctulatus belongs to a morphological group from southern Brazil and Uruguay that also includes H. megalopteryx and H. cerrado; these three species share external similarities but can be distinguished by meristic characters. Work by Armbruster and Werneke (2005) comparing H. cerrado with congeners noted that H. punctulatus has an internarial width of 11.2–13.9% of head length and an adipose-fin spine of 7.4–10.0% of SL, both characters smaller than in H. cerrado.
No L-number has been assigned to H. punctulatus. The common name Southern Blackspotted Pleco is used in English-language hobby literature.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum recorded length of 7.5 in standard length (SL) — a robust size for the genus, placing H. punctulatus at the larger end of medium-sized loricariids. Total length would add roughly 20–25% to this figure.
The body is covered in the overlapping bony scutes characteristic of Loricariidae. Ground colour is dark olive-brown to near-black, overlaid with a dense, fine pattern of pale whitish or cream spots (punctulations) that cover the body and unpaired fins. The ventral surface is paler and largely unspotted. Field images from Uruguay confirm this pattern in wild fish. The species epithet punctulatus (Latin: finely spotted, dotted) directly references this feature.
As a member of Hemiancistrus, males lack the elaborate branched rostral tentacles of Ancistrus; sexual dimorphism is present but subtle, primarily expressed in body shape (females broader-bodied when gravid) and differences in the genital papilla.
Habitat
Hemiancistrus punctulatus is native to the Laguna dos Patos drainage system of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, extending into Uruguay where it has been recorded in the Lagoa Mirim basin and the Yaguaron drainage (Cerro Largo Department, Arroyo Paso Sarandi; Cañada del Vigía). These are coastal-plain rivers and associated lagoons at the southern extreme of South America, well south of the tropics.
The Rio dos Sinos at the type locality is a moderately slow lowland river flowing through agricultural and mixed-forest landscape. The broad Laguna dos Patos basin spans a range of habitat types from swift rocky streams in the Serra Gaúcha foothills to slow, turbid lowland channels. Water temperatures in this region exhibit marked seasonality — summer highs may reach 79–82 °F while winter water temperatures can fall to 54–61 °F, making H. punctulatus considerably more cold-tolerant than most Amazonian loricariids.
Feeding
Hemiancistrus species are generally characterised as algae and aufwuchs grazers, supplementing this diet with invertebrates and organic detritus. The oral disc and fine teeth are suited for rasping biofilm, epilithic algae, and periphyton from hard substrates such as rock and submerged wood.
No published dietary study specifically addresses H. punctulatus. In the broader Hemiancistrus guild, feeding behaviour in captivity is consistent with a primarily plant-matter and aufwuchs diet: algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables are accepted, with small amounts of invertebrate food tolerated. Specific dietary data for H. punctulatus are not available from the literature.
Mating
No mating observations have been published for Hemiancistrus punctulatus, and PlanetCatfish records no aquarium breeding reports. The species is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. General Hemiancistrus reproductive biology, extrapolated from congeners, suggests cave-spawning behaviour with the male guarding the nest site, but this cannot be confirmed for H. punctulatus specifically.
Breeding
No breeding data are available for Hemiancistrus punctulatus. Neither scientific papers nor aquarium records document successful reproduction in captivity. At the genus level, Hemiancistrus species are expected to be cave-spawning loricariids with paternal egg guarding, following the widespread reproductive pattern in Hypostominae. Clutch size, incubation period, and fry development data are unavailable for this species.
In the aquarium
Hemiancistrus punctulatus is not established in the ornamental fish trade. PlanetCatfish records no registered keepers or spotters, and there are no known aquarium imports. The species' southerly distribution — outside the major collecting regions of the Amazon and Orinoco — likely accounts for its absence from the hobby.
Its tolerance of lower water temperatures (reflecting the cooler winters of Rio Grande do Sul) would in principle make it suitable for unheated or lightly heated aquaria in temperate climates, but this remains speculative. If the species were to become available, husbandry parameters drawn from its native habitat — moderate temperatures (61–79 °F seasonal range), neutral to slightly alkaline pH consistent with southern Brazilian waters, and hard substrates with driftwood and smooth rock — would be the most evidence-based starting point.
Conservation
Hemiancistrus punctulatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated on 7 November 2018. The assessment reflects a range that spans the Laguna dos Patos and Lagoa Mirim basins in Brazil and Uruguay, with no evidence of severe range restriction or population decline at the global scale.
The Laguna dos Patos system is the largest coastal lagoon in South America and supports extensive agricultural, urban, and fishery pressures. Water quality degradation and habitat modification in the Rio dos Sinos and associated rivers are documented concerns in the literature, but these have not yet translated into a threatened status for H. punctulatus. Ongoing monitoring of this system's fish communities would help confirm whether the LC designation remains appropriate as land-use pressures intensify.
