Taxonomy & naming

Hisonotus leucophrys was described by Carvalho and Reis in 2009, based on specimens collected from two right-bank tributaries of the upper Rio Uruguay in Santa Catarina state, Brazil: the Rio Ariranhas (the type locality proper, at the bridge of highway SC-466, 27°04'17"S, 52°20'34"W, municipality of Xavantina) and the Rio Rancho Grande. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Hisonotus leucophrys Carvalho & Reis, 2009, placed within the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae of the family Loricariidae.

The genus Hisonotus belongs to a lineage of small to miniature hypoptopomatine loricariids distributed primarily in the Atlantic coastal drainages and Rio de la Plata basin of eastern South America. It is distinguished from related genera (such as Otothyropsis and Microlepidogaster) by a suite of morphological characters including scale and scute counts, head proportions, and the arrangement of armour plates.

The specific epithet leucophrys is Greek: leukos (λευκός), meaning white, combined with ophrys (ὀφρύς), meaning eyebrow or brow ridge. The name directly references the white supraorbital stripe or marking that serves as the most immediately visible diagnostic feature of living specimens.

Morphology

Hisonotus leucophrys is a small species, reaching a maximum standard length of 1.5 in SL. The body follows the typical hypoptopomatine form: compact and strongly dorso-ventrally flattened, with a broad, depressed head, a ventrally positioned suckermouth furnished with fine, multicusped teeth suited to scraping biofilm and algae from hard surfaces, and a complete covering of bony scutes across the trunk and head.

The diagnostic colouration character from which the species takes its name is the white supraorbital marking — a pale stripe or spot above the eye that contrasts with the darker, cryptically mottled brownish ground colour of the dorsal surface. This mark is visible in fresh specimens and provides a reliable in-hand identifier. The flanks show variable darker mottling or banding that blends with the rock and stone substrates of the streams the species inhabits. The ventral surface is paler.

The dorsal fin is moderate in size relative to the body. Sexual dimorphism is not described in detail for this species in available sources; in related miniature loricariids, gravid females can appear broader-bodied when viewed from above.

Habitat

Hisonotus leucophrys has a restricted, precisely documented distribution: it is known only from two right-bank tributaries of the upper Rio Uruguay, both in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. The type locality — the Rio Ariranhas at the Xavantina highway bridge — and the secondary site on the Rio Rancho Grande represent the complete known range at the time of description.

FishBase records the biology as reflecting preference for median to fast-flowing clear-water streams, with stone and sand substrates, and notes the species has been found in aquatic and partially submerged grass or vegetation mats at stream margins. This habitat profile — clean, clear, well-oxygenated fast water over hard substrates — is characteristic of the Hypoptopomatinae as a whole, whose algae-scraping lifestyle requires illuminated, biofilm-supporting surfaces in moving water.

The upper Uruguay basin at this latitude in Santa Catarina experiences subtropical rather than tropical conditions — cooler than most Amazonian loricariid habitats, with potential seasonal temperature variation. Feeding

Hisonotus leucophrys is an aufwuchs grazer, feeding on the periphytic biofilm — a complex community of algae (especially diatoms), bacteria, fungi, and fine detrital particles — that develops on rocks, submerged stones, wood, and other hard surfaces in the well-illuminated fast-water streams it inhabits. The fine, multicusped teeth of the suckermouth are well adapted to closely cropping this thin but nutritious surface layer without damaging the substrate.

This feeding mode is shared across the Hypoptopomatinae and parallels that of Otocinclus, the most commonly kept member of the subfamily in aquaria. In an aquarium setting, Hisonotus leucophrys would be expected to graze actively on established algal growth on glass, décor, and plant leaves, supplemented by sinking algae wafers, spirulina discs, and blanched soft vegetables. No species-specific feeding observations are on record in the sources reviewed.

Mating

No mating behaviour specific to Hisonotus leucophrys has been published in available sources. The species is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby, and field observations of reproductive behaviour have not been recorded in the literature reviewed here.

At the subfamily level, hypoptopomatine loricariids typically engage in brief, active courtship in which males pursue ripe females near spawning substrates. The pair then deposit small adhesive clutches of eggs on the underside of stones, leaves, or aquarium glass, after which no parental care is provided. Whether H. leucophrys follows this pattern exactly cannot be confirmed from available data.

Breeding

No breeding reports for Hisonotus leucophrys in captivity exist in the sources reviewed. The species is not represented in the hobby trade in any meaningful way, and captive reproduction has not been documented.

At the level of the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, the reproductive mode is typically that of a free-spawning adhesive egg depositor: eggs are laid in small clutches on cleaned hard surfaces and hatch without parental attendance, with fry immediately free-swimming and self-feeding on fine algal and biofilm resources. Replication of the species' clear, fast-flowing, cool subtropical stream habitat would be the logical starting point for any captive breeding attempt, including good flow, high oxygenation, hard substrate, and established biofilm cover.

In the aquarium

Hisonotus leucophrys is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby and is not available through normal ornamental trade channels. Its small size (1.5 in SL maximum) would make it appropriate for a nano or small species aquarium if it were to become available.

Its clear-water, fast-flowing stream origin in the upper Uruguay basin of Santa Catarina suggests husbandry requirements that differ from typical tropical loricariids: the subtropical latitude implies cooler water, and literature on related stream-dwelling hypoptopomatines points toward temperatures in the 64–75 °F range, soft to moderately hard clean water, high oxygenation, significant flow, and a hard substrate that supports algal biofilm growth. These requirements would make it more analogous to a cool-water stream species than a typical Amazon-basin pleco.

For any aquarist encountering this species, the key priorities would be clean, well-oxygenated water with good flow, established algal growth as a primary food source, and appropriately sized, peaceful companions. The species' restricted natural range and absence from the trade means all husbandry guidance is necessarily extrapolated from subfamily biology and habitat inference.

Conservation

Hisonotus leucophrys is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 18 May 2022. However, its very restricted natural range — documented only from two tributaries of the upper Rio Uruguay in a single Brazilian state — warrants attention beyond the summary status alone. Species with such narrow distributions are inherently more vulnerable to localised habitat degradation than range-wide assessments might suggest.

The upper Rio Uruguay basin in Santa Catarina is under pressure from agricultural intensification, small hydroelectric development, and water extraction; the clear-water, rocky-bottomed streams favoured by this species are sensitive to sedimentation from deforestation and land clearance in their catchments. While the species was assessed as Least Concern in 2022, its restricted range and specialist habitat requirements mean that any deterioration of its two known stream localities could have disproportionate conservation consequences.
