Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus taunayi was described by Miranda Ribeiro in 1918 in Revista do Museu Paulista (volume 10, p. 631), from specimens collected at Rio Lageado, Itaqui, Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the name as valid in the genus Ancistrus, and Ferraris (2007, Zootaxa 1418) includes it in his comprehensive loricariid checklist. Muller (1989) provided morphological data and a lectotype illustration that remain useful reference points.
Ancistrus is one of the largest genera in Loricariidae, with well over 60 described species. It sits within the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae. The genus is immediately distinguished from all other loricariids by the branched, fleshy interopercular odontodes — the so-called tentacles — that develop on the snouts of mature males. No other armoured catfish genus produces this structure in the same form.
No L-number has been assigned to A. taunayi in the DATZ or 'Das Aquarium' coding systems, reflecting its relatively modest presence in European ornamental trade compared with the Amazonian Ancistrus species that dominate the hobby.
Morphology
Ancistrus taunayi reaches approximately 5.5 in total length (TL), or roughly 4.5 in standard length (SL), placing it at the larger end of the genus. The body follows the Ancistrus plan: dorsoventrally flattened, covered in interlocking bony scutes, with a broad, sucker-like ventral mouth adapted for rasping surfaces. Published weights reach about 52 g for fully grown adults.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and makes Ancistrus one of the easiest pleco genera to sex visually. Mature males develop prominent, branched soft tentacles across the snout and along the upper lip margin — structures unique to this genus among Loricariidae. Females may develop much smaller, unbranched tentacles at the lip margin, but the large bushy snout crown of a breeding male is unmistakable. Both sexes bear the odontodes (spiny bristles) typical of loricariids on the interopercular plates, though these are more developed in males.
Coloration data for wild-caught A. taunayi is sparse in the available literature. The typical Ancistrus pattern of dark brown or grey-brown ground colour with pale spots is documented; precise pattern details await further study of fresh material.
Habitat
Ancistrus taunayi is native to the middle Uruguay River basin, with the type locality at Rio Lageado, Itaqui, Rio Grande do Sul, in the far south of Brazil. The Uruguay drainage spans southern Brazil, northeastern Argentina, and Uruguay, flowing through a temperate climate zone very different from the Amazonian drainages inhabited by most Ancistrus.
Water conditions in this region are notably cooler than those of tropical South American rivers. ScotCat records temperatures of 64–75 °F (64–75 °F) and pH 6.0–7.5 for the species — a significantly colder regime than the 77–82 °F typical of Amazonian bristlenoses. Loureiro et al. (2023, Freshwater Fishes of Uruguay, 2nd ed.) confirm the species' presence in Uruguayan river systems. The fish favours rocky substrates and riverine structures where algae and biofilm accumulate, consistent with the genus's preference for grazing surfaces in areas of moderate water movement.
A. taunayi is listed as a facultative or obligate air-breather (FishBase Ref. 126274), a trait shared by some other Ancistrus species and presumably adaptive in seasonally low-oxygen waters.
Feeding
Ancistrus taunayi is primarily a herbivore and aufwuchs grazer, scraping algae and biofilm from hard surfaces with its specialised mouthparts. PlanetCatfish and ScotCat both document an algae-dominated diet in the wild and in captivity.
In the aquarium, the species accepts algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking foods, and a range of blanched vegetables: courgette (zucchini), cucumber, raw potato, and similar soft plant material are all readily taken. ScotCat notes that proprietary loricariid tablets are also accepted. Occasional protein supplements — frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp — can be offered but should not dominate the diet. The temperate origin of this species is relevant here: cold-water river algae communities differ from tropical ones, but the basic scraping feeding mode is the same.
Mating
Courtship follows the general Ancistrus pattern. Males are territorial, particularly around caves or crevices that serve as spawning sites, and will defend these vigorously against rival males. The prominent snout tentacles of mature males are thought to be involved in conspecific signalling — males display them to rivals and potential mates, and they may play a role in female mate choice, though direct behavioural study of A. taunayi specifically is sparse.
Males may be intolerant of one another in confined spaces; a single male with one or more females is the standard arrangement in smaller aquaria. Females move between territories and select a preferred male and nest site.
Breeding
Ancistrus taunayi is a cave-spawner with paternal brood care, consistent with all described Ancistrus species. The male selects and cleans a cave or crevice — a hollow log, a ceramic tube, or a tight rock gap — before courtship. The female deposits adhesive eggs on the interior walls, and the male then takes sole responsibility for brood care, fanning the eggs with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygen flow and removing any infertile or fungused eggs.
ScotCat records an incubation period of approximately 4–7 days, after which fry cling to the cave walls absorbing their yolk sacs. Once free-swimming, the fry accept infusoria, fine vegetable matter, brine shrimp nauplii, and micro worms. The male typically continues guarding until the fry begin to disperse independently.
For conditioning, the species' temperate origin suggests that cooler water — in the 64–72 °F range — may be particularly effective as a spawning cue, mimicking seasonal temperature drops in the Uruguay basin. Regular water changes and varied diet are standard requirements.
In the aquarium
Ancistrus taunayi is well suited to keepers who maintain cooler-water community aquaria — tanks designed for southern South American or temperate species where the standard 77–82 °F of a tropical setup is inappropriate. The recommended temperature range of 64–75 °F (64–75 °F) makes it a compatible tankmate for species from similar latitudes: southern Corydoras, Buenos Aires tetras, or subtropical livebearers, for example.
At up to 5.5 in TL, adults need a reasonably sized tank — 25 US gal or more is appropriate for a single specimen or a pair. The species is generally peaceful toward other fish; male-to-male territorial behaviour is the main intraspecific tension, which is managed with adequate cave provision. Multiple caves or tubes should be provided even when only one male is present, as the fish rests and hides during the day.
Water chemistry should fall in the pH 6.0–7.5 range with clean, well-oxygenated water. The temperate origin means the species is unlikely to thrive long-term in a tank kept above 75–77 °F; chronic warmth can impair immune function and shorten lifespan. Driftwood, rocks, and algae-rich surfaces are appreciated both as food sources and as shelter. Avoid keeping with aggressive or very large cichlids that might target the fish's tentacles.
Conservation
Ancistrus taunayi is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, most recently evaluated by Salvador (2023). The species has a reasonably wide distribution across the middle Uruguay basin — spanning parts of southern Brazil, northeastern Argentina, and Uruguay — and no major threats that would qualify it for a category of concern were identified at the time of assessment.
Loureiro et al. (2023) document the species in Uruguayan freshwaters, confirming its continued presence across part of the range. The Uruguay River basin faces the pressures common to southern South American river systems: agricultural runoff, sedimentation, and the effects of hydroelectric infrastructure, but these have not yet translated into a documented population trend sufficient to change the species' Red List status.
