A temperate-zone Hypostomus native to the Uruguay River basin, roseopunctatus earns its name from the faint rose or pink tint to the pale spots that pattern its armoured flanks — a subtle but distinctive departure from the plain dark speckling of its southern-basin congeners.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus roseopunctatus was formally described by Reis, Weber, and Malabarba in 1990 from material collected in the Rio Pelotas drainage, a headwater tributary of the Uruguay River in southern Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the combination Hypostomus roseopunctatus as the valid name, with Reis, Weber & Malabarba (1990) as the authority. The species belongs to the large, taxonomically complex genus Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803 — one of the most species-rich genera in the family Loricariidae and the nominal genus of subfamily Hypostominae.

The epithet is descriptive: roseo- derives from the Latin roseus (rose-coloured, pink) and punctatus from punctum (spot, dot), together meaning 'rose-spotted' or 'pink-dotted', alluding to the characteristic pale rose-tinted markings against the darker ground colour. No L-number has been assigned to this species in the German aquarium trade literature.

Morphology

Hypostomus roseopunctatus is a moderately sized loricariid, reaching approximately 9 in standard length (SL) based on the IUCN assessment figure (Froese & Pauly 2019). FishBase records a total length (TL) of 17 in from a separate dataset; the relationship between these two figures has not been fully reconciled in the literature, and the SL figure is used here as the more directly reported measurement. The body carries the typical Hypostomus bauplan: a broad, flattened head tapering to a narrower, keeled caudal peduncle, the entire dorsal and lateral surface covered in overlapping bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows.

Ground colour is dark greyish-brown to olive, with pale spots distributed across the head and trunk that tend toward a pinkish or rose hue — the feature that distinguishes this species from similarly sized sympatric Hypostomus. The ventralsurface is notably paler and largely unplated posteriorly, as is typical of the genus. The dorsal fin is tall with a stiffened first ray. The oral disc is wide and ventrally positioned, with fine teeth adapted for grazing biofilm and algae from hard substrates. Hobbyist records suggest males develop more pronounced odontodes on the pectoral spines and flanks during the breeding season, consistent with the general Hypostomus pattern.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Uruguay River basin, distributed across rivers draining the highlands of southern Brazil and the adjacent territories of Uruguay and Argentina. Known localities include the Rio Pelotas (the type locality near Pinhal da Serra, approximately 27.8°S, 51.2°W), Rio Canoas, Rio Comandaí, Rio Ijuí-mirim, and the Río Negro and Río Uruguay themselves. The first confirmed Argentine record, from Corrientes and Misiones provinces, was not established until 2020 (Terán et al.), reflecting ongoing faunal surveys in this basin.

Unlike the predominantly tropical Hypostomus fauna further north, this species inhabits temperate highland streams and rivers that experience marked seasonal temperature fluctuations. Hobbyist sources record water temperatures of 64–77 °F and pH values of 5.5–7.0, consistent with the slightly acidic, tannin-influenced waters of the southern Brazilian plateau. The fish favours reaches with moderate to strong current, rocky substrates, and well-oxygenated conditions. The IUCN extent of occurrence (EOO) spans approximately 246,109 mi², and the population trend is listed as unknown, though no major threats have been identified.

Feeding

Like the majority of Hypostomus species, H. roseopunctatus is an omnivorous grazer that feeds primarily on periphyton — the biofilm of algae, bacteria, fungi, and fine organic detritus that colonises submerged rocks and wood. The oral disc and fine bicuspid teeth are well suited to scraping growth from hard substrates, and the fish will work methodically across rock faces, submerged roots, and any other firm surface in its territory.

In the aquarium, the diet should be anchored by algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking pellets. Blanched vegetables — courgette (zucchini), cucumber, spinach, and sweet potato — are readily accepted. Occasional protein supplements such as frozen bloodworm or earthworm are appropriate but need not dominate the menu. In a planted or mature tank, the fish will graze incidental algae, though it should not be relied upon as an algae-control measure in large aquaria.

Mating

No detailed field or aquarium observations of courtship behaviour in H. roseopunctatus have been published. Based on the consistent biology across the genus, males can be expected to become territorial around suitable spawning sites — crevices, undercut banks, or submerged cavities — during the reproductive season, using their more prominent pectoral and flank odontodes in male-to-male signalling and to court females. Females in breeding condition are typically wider-bodied than males when viewed from above, and the genital papilla of conditioned females is visibly larger and more rounded. Seasonal cues — temperature drops and rising water levels mimicking spring flood conditions in the southern hemisphere — likely influence readiness to spawn, as is documented in other temperate Hypostomus species.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for H. roseopunctatus have been located in the accessible hobby literature. The species is not commonly kept in the aquarium trade, and its temperate habitat requirements mean that breeding conditions may differ from those used for tropical plecos. Based on the genus-wide pattern, cave-spawning behaviour with paternal brood care is the most likely reproductive strategy: the male would guard a clutch of adhesive eggs deposited inside a cavity, fanning them to maintain oxygen flow and removing infertile eggs until hatching.

Attempts at breeding would logically be encouraged by seasonal temperature cycling — allowing the aquarium to cool toward 64 °F in winter before warming again in spring — combined with varied conditioning foods and high water quality. Given the absence of documented breeding, these remain inferences from related species.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus roseopunctatus is a temperate species, and its care requirements reflect that origin. A minimum temperature of 64 °F is tolerable, but the fish is unlikely to thrive in the warm tropical conditions (82 °F+) maintained for most aquarium inhabitants. This makes it a better fit for temperate or cool-water aquaria than for community tanks built around Amazonian or West African species. A tank of at least 59 in length is recommended given the fish's potential adult size.

Water chemistry should favour slightly acidic to neutral conditions (pH 5.5–7.0) with moderate to good water flow. The substrate should include rocky areas that the fish can brace against while grazing, and robust décor such as smooth river cobbles and driftwood is appropriate. Bogwood provides both shelter and supplemental grazing surface. Regular partial water changes are essential for maintaining the high oxygen levels this current-adapted species requires. Tankmates should be cold-tolerant species; subtropical or temperate community fish such as White Cloud Mountain Minnows or hillstream loaches from comparable altitudes make more ecologically coherent companions than tropical tetras.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus roseopunctatus as Least Concern (LC) in an assessment published in 2023 (assessed 12 November 2020; assessment by Salvador, G.N.; reviewed by Reis, R.; DOI: 10.2305/IUCN.UK.2023-1.RLTS.T187151A1823884.en). The justification cites a wide geographic range across the Uruguay basin of Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina, and the absence of any identified significant threats. The EOO of approximately 246,109 mi² is large, and there are no reports of targeted fishing pressure or collection for the ornamental trade at a scale that would affect the population.

The range of the species may in fact be larger than historical records suggested; the first Argentine record was confirmed only in 2020 (Terán et al.), indicating that distribution surveys in the Uruguay system remain incomplete. No specific conservation programmes are in place, and protected area coverage within the range has not been assessed. The population trend remains unknown.
