Originally described from the Uruguay River in 1942 and later lumped into broader synonymy before being revalidated by Montoya and Weber in 2001, this medium-to-large Hypostomus ranges across the La Plata basin from Uruguay into Argentina. Its distinctive light vermicular spots on the abdomen and a parieto-supraoccipital in contact with a single lateral plate — rather than three — set it apart from its closest relatives in a crowded subtropical catfish fauna.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus luteomaculatus was originally described by Garibaldi José Devincenzi in 1942 from the Uruguay River drainage. The species subsequently fell into synonymy under broader Hypostomus treatments and was not recognised as valid until its revalidation by Montoya and Weber (2001, cited in press on FishBase). The valid combination Hypostomus luteomaculatus (Devincenzi, 1942) is recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).

A key diagnostic character distinguishing H. luteomaculatus from the closely related H. luteus is the configuration of the parieto-supraoccipital: in H. luteomaculatus it contacts a single lateral plate, whereas in H. luteus it contacts three plates (Bogan et al. 2023). Molecular analysis of Argentine specimens by Cardoso (2014), including specimens collected close to the type locality, confirms that these fish match H. luteomaculatus sequences, lending additional weight to the revalidation. The species appears across regional ichthyological checklists for Uruguay, Argentina, and the lower Paraná system.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 11 in SL for H. luteomaculatus — one of the larger members of the La Plata Hypostomus fauna. Total length in a fully grown adult would likely approach or exceed 12.5–14 in TL. Body form follows the standard Hypostomus template: flattened venter, robust bony armour of interlocking scutes across the dorsal and lateral surfaces, and a ventral sucker mouth.

The most conspicuous distinguishing mark is on the abdomen: H. luteomaculatus bears pale, light vermicular (worm-like) spots across the belly surface. This character, combined with the parieto-supraoccipital plate contact with a single lateral plate (versus three in H. luteus), provides reliable external discrimination from the co-occurring H. luteus. The vernacular name 'cascudo amarelo' (yellow pleco) in Uruguay and Argentina likely alludes to the yellowish or pale ground tone of the underside and spots. Data on precise dorsal colouration and spotting patterns are sparse in the available literature.

Habitat

The type locality is the Uruguay River, and the species range documented by Bogan et al. (2023) and Cardoso et al. (2016) spans the Uruguay River basin and the middle to lower Paraná River in Argentina: confirmed localities include Candelaria and Ituzaingó (Misiones), Antequera (Chaco), and Puerto Gaboto (Santa Fe). These records place H. luteomaculatus in the mid to lower reaches of the Paraná-Uruguay river system within the La Plata basin.

The Paraná and Uruguay rivers in this region are large, warm-season subtropical rivers with water temperatures that rise to 81–86 °F in summer and can fall toward 54–61 °F in austral winter. Waters are generally of moderate hardness and neutral to slightly alkaline pH, characteristic of the Pampas and Mesopotamia zones of Argentina through which these rivers flow. Specific pH and temperature records for H. luteomaculatus are not available in the sources consulted. The species has not been recorded from the Paraguay River itself.

Feeding

No species-specific feeding data for H. luteomaculatus are available. It is a member of the broad genus Hypostomus in a region where congeners are predominantly periphyton scrapers and detritivores — grazing algal films and organic matter from submerged rock, wood, and other hard substrates. This generalised scraping diet is the default inference in the absence of stomach content or ecomorphological data specific to this species. Data are sparse.

Mating

No mating behaviour specific to H. luteomaculatus has been described in the sources available. General loricariid biology informs that territorial males guard nest sites, develop seasonal odontodes, and court females; sexual dimorphism allowing reliable external sexing has not been described for this species. Breeding

No captive breeding records for H. luteomaculatus are available. The subtropical origin implies a seasonal reproductive cycle linked to spring warming and flood-pulse cues, consistent with other La Plata basin Hypostomus. Cave-spawning with paternal egg-guarding is the expected reproductive mode within Hypostominae, but specifics for this species remain unconfirmed. Data are sparse.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus luteomaculatus is not a regular fixture in the ornamental fish trade and is primarily encountered as a scientific specimen rather than a hobby fish. Its maximum size of 11 in SL (likely 12.5–14 in TL) places it among the larger Hypostomus and necessitates a tank of at least 80–105 US gal with correspondingly powerful filtration.

The subtropical La Plata basin origin is relevant to aquarium husbandry: unlike strictly tropical Hypostomus, this species likely tolerates — and may benefit from — a seasonal temperature drop, with winter temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties or even high teens being natural. This makes it potentially manageable in temperate climates without continuous heating, or in outdoor ponds in mild climates during summer.

A diet of algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and sinking pellets, with occasional protein supplementation, should suit the inferred generalised scraping diet. Large flat stones and broad pipe or cave structures make appropriate décor. Without captive breeding data, this fish is best viewed as a display specimen for large specialist catfish set-ups rather than a breeding project.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus luteomaculatus as Least Concern, with the assessment dated 12 November 2020. The species occurs across the Uruguay River basin and portions of the lower Paraná River in Argentina, a distribution spanning two countries and several river sections, with no documented evidence of major population decline.

The Paraná-Uruguay river system faces ongoing pressure from hydroelectric dam construction — several large impoundments already affect habitat continuity across the lower Paraná — as well as agricultural runoff and urban water extraction. Large-bodied, long-lived Hypostomus can be locally vulnerable to targeted fishing pressure and habitat alteration, but at the species level H. luteomaculatus is currently not considered at risk.
