A single conspicuous white-to-yellow spot blazing against dark posterior flanks earned this Venezuelan riffle catfish its name: sidereus, Latin for 'starry'. Restricted to the upper Orinoco and Casiquiare drainages in southern Amazonas state, Pseudancistrus sidereus is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade and remains one of the lesser-known members of a group that systematic work suggests may eventually be reassigned to a new genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudancistrus sidereus was described by Jonathan Armbruster in 2004 in Zootaxa (volume 628, pages 1–15), in a paper that simultaneously provided a redescription of the genus Pseudancistrus. The holotype, MCNG 26125 (7 in SL), was collected on 20 April 1991 by Armbruster, Douglas and Morillo from the Río Siapa in Amazonas state, Venezuela, approximately 6–9 mi downstream of the junction with the Casiquiare, at approximately 01°30'N, 65°43'W.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) currently recognises Pseudancistrus sidereus as a valid species within subfamily Hypostominae. However, Armbruster's own subsequent work and related phylogenetic analyses have raised the possibility that P. sidereus and its apparent closest relative P. pectegenitor (also known from the upper Orinoco and Río Negro drainages) may not belong to the core Pseudancistrus barbatus species group. Their placement in Pseudancistrus sensu stricto is tentative pending formal genus-level revision of this part of Hypostominae; FishBase retains the current combination.

The species epithet sidereus is a Latin adjective meaning 'starry' or 'of the stars', derived from sidus (genitive sideris), meaning a star or constellation. It alludes to the single large, conspicuous white-to-yellow spot on the posterior lateral plates — a mark that stands out strikingly against the dark ground colour of the body.

Morphology

The holotype measures 7 in SL, and FishBase records a maximum size of 7 in SL for the species. The body conforms to the typical Pseudancistrus plan: robust, dorsoventrally compressed, covered in bony scutes, with a ventral sucker mouth equipped for attachment to hard substrates in current.

The most distinctive external feature is the single large white or pale yellow spot located on the posterior lateral plates — the character for which the species is named. This spot is apparently consistent across known specimens and provides a reliable field identification mark. The remainder of the body is dark, lacking the spotted or vermiculate patterns seen in some allied taxa.

Pseudancistrus species typically possess interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) in males, and these are likely present in P. sidereus, though the degree of development specifically in this species has not been documented in detail. Females are presumed to be broader-bodied when gravid, following the general Hypostominae pattern. The species is recorded as a facultative air-breather, consistent with other loricariids from variable-oxygen tropical streams.

Habitat

Pseudancistrus sidereus is known from the Río Siapa, a tributary within the Casiquiare–Río Negro drainage system in southern Amazonas state, Venezuela. The Casiquiare is the natural canal connecting the upper Orinoco and the Río Negro (Amazon drainage), making the type locality a biogeographically significant zone at the boundary of two of South America's largest river systems. Closest relative P. pectegenitor also occurs in the upper Orinoco, supporting a southern Venezuelan centre of distribution for this pair of species.

The waters of the Río Siapa and the broader Casiquiare drainage are characterised by soft, tea-coloured or clear water, typically acidic to near neutral (pH approximately 5.5–7.0), warm (approximately 79–86 °F), and low in dissolved minerals. These are blackwater or clearwater conditions typical of rivers draining the ancient, nutrient-poor Guiana Shield.

Microhabitat specifics for P. sidereus at the type locality have not been published in detail, but Pseudancistrus species are generally associated with rocky substrates in areas of moderate to swift current, where they graze biofilm and algae from rock surfaces.

Feeding

Pseudancistrus sidereus is presumed to be a biofilm grazer and aufwuchs scraper, consistent with the feeding guild occupied by most Hypostominae from rocky, fast-flowing rivers. The genus as a whole lacks the specialised, spatulate wood-eating teeth of xylophagous loricariids; instead, Pseudancistrus species have fine, multi-cusped teeth adapted for rasping algae and microbial mats from hard surfaces.

No dietary study exists specifically for this species. In the aquarium, related Pseudancistrus and allied genera accept algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables, and biofilm that develops on rocks and wood surfaces. The Casiquiare region's blackwater character suggests this species is adapted to low-nutrient conditions, and overfeeding with protein-rich foods is unlikely to suit it well.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour has not been described for Pseudancistrus sidereus in the wild or in captivity. As with other Hypostominae from rocky riffle and rapid habitats, males presumably defend crevice or cave sites, display interopercular odontodes during courtship, and compete for territory with rival males.

The strongly regional distribution of this species — restricted to the upper Orinoco / Casiquiare area — and its absence from the ornamental trade mean that essentially no first-hand hobbyist observations exist. Behavioural descriptions for this species would require field work or deliberate captive study.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Pseudancistrus sidereus has been documented in the available literature. Based on Hypostominae reproductive biology broadly, cave spawning with paternal guarding of eggs and early fry is the most probable mode.

Clutch size, incubation period, fry development, and specific triggers for spawning are all undescribed for this species. The species is not known in the ornamental trade and has not been the subject of directed aquaculture or captive-breeding programmes. Detailed breeding information awaits either importation into hobby collections or dedicated field research.

In the aquarium

Pseudancistrus sidereus is not established in the ornamental trade and is unlikely to be encountered by most aquarists. Its restricted range in southern Venezuelan Amazonas and its apparent absence from collection records in the hobby make it an essentially wild species from a hobbyist perspective.

Should specimens become available, the water chemistry of the type locality provides clear guidance: soft, acidic to near-neutral water (pH 5.5–7.0) with temperatures of 79–86 °F would be appropriate targets. A current-rich aquarium with smooth rocks for biofilm grazing and crevices for shelter is appropriate for the genus. Given a maximum size of approximately 7 in SL, a tank of at least 40–55 US gal would be needed for adult specimens.

Diet should be algae-centred: quality algae wafers, spirulina discs, and biofilm-colonised surfaces. Vegetables and occasional invertebrate supplements are appropriate additions. Tankmates should be peaceful, tolerant of soft acidic water, and not competing for the same bottom territory.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudancistrus sidereus as Least Concern in August 2020. The current assessment does not identify the species as meeting thresholds for threatened categories.

However, the species' known range is narrow: the upper Orinoco and Casiquiare drainages of southern Venezuela. The Casiquiare region and southern Venezuelan Amazonas are relatively remote and less heavily developed than many tropical river systems, which likely contributes to the Least Concern assessment. Nonetheless, large-scale extractive industries, mining, and potential future infrastructure development in the Venezuelan Amazon represent ongoing background threats to fish communities in this region.

Population data specific to P. sidereus are sparse. The species' restricted distribution and apparent rarity in collections mean that any significant habitat perturbation in the Río Siapa watershed or the broader Casiquiare drainage could affect it in ways that current data are insufficient to detect.
