Taxonomy & naming
Hypoptopoma guianense was described by Marinus Boeseman in 1974 in the Proceedings of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (Series C, Biological and Medical Sciences, volume 77, number 3, page 259, figure 1, plate 1). The type locality is a left tributary of the Nickerie River, a few kilometres upstream from Stonedansi Falls, Suriname. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypoptopoma guianense Boeseman, 1974 as the valid name; the form Hypoptopoma guianensis represents a minor orthographic variant of the same taxon recorded by some sources.
The genus Hypoptopoma belongs to subfamily Hypoptopomatinae within Loricariidae, the armoured suckermouth catfishes. Boeseman placed this species within the genus on the basis of the characteristic flat-headed body form, laterally positioned eyes, and the caudal-fin spot pattern that distinguishes Hypoptopoma species from one another.
The key taxonomic character separating H. guianense from H. thoracatum — the most frequently encountered congener — is the caudal spot: in H. guianense, the elongated dark spot along the median caudal-fin rays IS connected to the lanceolate plates at the base of the fin, and it extends over an equal number of rays in both the upper and lower lobes, covering more than two-thirds of the ray length. This is explicitly opposite to the condition in H. thoracatum, where the spot is not connected to the lanceolate plates and favours the lower lobe. This character is critical for correct field identification.
Morphology
Hypoptopoma guianense reaches approximately 2.5 in standard length (SL) as an adult — a compact size for the genus, somewhat smaller than the type species H. thoracatum. The body shares the broad, flat-headed, stocky profile characteristic of Hypoptopoma: markedly flattened ventrally, covered in overlapping bony scutes, with a concave dorsal head profile. The tail is not extremely thin, distinguishing Hypoptopoma from the loricariin substrate-huggers with their ribbon-thin caudal peduncles.
The most important diagnostic feature is the caudal-fin spot: an elongated patch of dark melanophores connecting directly to the lanceolate plates at the base of the caudal fin and extending over an equal number of upper- and lower-lobe rays for more than two-thirds of the ray length. This precise description, from the FishBase comparative notes derived from the genus revision, provides the reliable means of separating this species from H. thoracatum in the aquarium and in the field.
The eyes are positioned laterally on the sides of the head — a defining character of the genus, shared with H. thoracatum and contrasting with the more dorsally positioned eyes of many other loricariids. PlanetCatfish photographs include preserved specimens in lateral, dorsal, and ventral views, documenting the typical hypoptopoma body plan.
Sexual dimorphism is not documented in the available literature for this species.
Habitat
Hypoptopoma guianense is endemic to coastal river drainages of the Guianas: the Essequibo River basin in Guyana and the Nickerie River basin in Suriname. This distribution places it entirely outside the Amazon basin proper, in the independently draining coastal rivers of the Guiana Shield — a geologically ancient uplift whose river systems harbour a distinctive freshwater fauna with a high degree of endemism.
The type locality, a left tributary of the Nickerie River upstream from Stonedansi Falls, indicates association with clear, rocky, or forested-stream microhabitats typical of Guiana Shield drainages. These rivers are characterised by soft, acidic to near-neutral water with low conductivity, draining ancient crystalline basement rocks with minimal mineralisation.
FishBase records the species as tropical, freshwater, and demersal. The facultative air-breathing characteristic recorded at the genus level applies broadly to Hypoptopoma and likely extends to this species, enabling tolerance of warm, sluggish reaches with reduced dissolved oxygen.
Feeding
Hypoptopoma guianense is presumed to be an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer consistent with the feeding strategy of the genus. The suckermouth disc enables rasping of periphyton — algae, diatoms, bacteria, and fine detritus — from submerged surfaces including plant stems, wood, and rock. No species-specific feeding studies exist in the available literature.
In the aquarium, the diet should follow the approach recommended for Hypoptopoma generally: a base of algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking foods, supplemented with blanched soft vegetables (courgette/zucchini, cucumber), and natural aufwuchs growth on glass and décor encouraged as a continuous grazing resource. Protein-heavy foods are not required and should be offered only sparingly.
Mating
No courtship observations are documented for Hypoptopoma guianense. PlanetCatfish lists no registered keepers and no breeding reports for this species. Given its rarity in the hobby and the absence of captive experience, all reproductive behaviour for this species remains undescribed.
By analogy with the broader Hypoptopomatinae and small loricariids generally, a surface-spawning mode with eggs deposited on plant surfaces or flat substrate is plausible, and males may engage in close-following and surface-inspection behaviour during courtship. These are inferences from family-level biology, not documented observations.
Breeding
No captive breeding reports exist for Hypoptopoma guianense. The species has no registered keepers in the PlanetCatfish database and is not documented as having been bred in captivity. Reproductive biology at the species level is entirely unknown from the available sources.
Hobbyists keeping this species and wishing to attempt breeding would need to work without a reference protocol. Conditioning adults on a varied plant-based diet in soft, slightly acidic water with a temperature in the tropical range, providing densely planted or well-decorated tanks, and maintaining excellent water quality with regular partial changes would be the logical starting approach based on subfamily-level biology.
In the aquarium
Hypoptopoma guianense is a rare aquarium fish. PlanetCatfish holds four photographs on record (including preserved museum specimens), and no registered keepers are listed — indicating that the species reaches the trade only rarely, if at all, in contrast to its congener H. thoracatum. Hobbyists in Guyana or Suriname are the most likely source of specimens, as the species is not part of any established Brazilian export fishery.
Aquarium conditions should replicate the soft, slightly acidic, warm waters of the Guiana Shield coastal drainages: temperature in the tropical range (approximately 75–82 °F is appropriate given the tropical latitude), pH on the acidic side of neutral to moderately acidic, and soft water with low conductivity. Dense planting provides grazing surface and refuge.
At 2.5 in SL, H. guianense is a manageable size for a nano or species tank or a peaceful community of similarly sized fish. Its entirely peaceful, non-aggressive disposition means it will not bother tankmates, and it is vulnerable to predation or food competition from larger or more assertive species. Regular availability of algae and biofilm is the primary husbandry requirement.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypoptopoma guianense as Least Concern in 2020, concordant with FishBase and PlanetCatfish records. The assessment reflects the absence of identified threats sufficient to elevate the species above LC status, despite its relatively restricted distribution in the coastal drainages of Guyana and Suriname.
The Guiana Shield is one of the least-disturbed large freshwater landscapes in the world, and the Essequibo and Nickerie basins remain largely intact ecosystems with limited industrial development relative to larger Amazonian systems. However, gold mining — a significant and growing environmental pressure in both Guyana and Suriname — poses a threat to Guiana Shield river systems through mercury pollution, sedimentation, and riparian habitat destruction. These pressures are not currently considered to threaten H. guianense specifically, but continued monitoring of the health of the Essequibo and Nickerie drainages is warranted for the endemic fauna they support.
