Hypoptopoma inexspectatum is the sole member of its genus to venture beyond the Amazon and into the La Plata system — a flathead dwarf suckermouth that grazes macrophyte beds from the Pantanal to the Argentinian Paraná, tolerating cooler subtropical winters that would defeat most of its Amazonian relatives. Overlooked in the hobby because it lacks flashy colour or an L-number, it has nonetheless attracted academic attention for its well-studied reproductive biology and its peculiar arrangement of odontodes along the snout margin.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypoptopoma inexspectatum was originally described by Eduardo L. Holmberg in 1893 as Aristommata inexspectata in the Revista del Jardín Zoológico de Buenos Aires (volume 1, no. 3, p. 96), from a single holotype (MACN 5164) collected in the Río Paraguay near Formosa city, Formosa Province, Argentina. The specific epithet was coined as a Latin adjective, and the correct gender agreement in the combination Hypoptopoma inexspectatum (neuter) represents an emendation from the original feminine form. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Hypoptopoma inexspectatum (Holmberg 1893), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus.

Synonyms in the literature include Aristommata inexspectata Holmberg, Hypoptopoma guentheri (Boulenger, 1895), and Oxyropsis guentheri, among orthographic variants — reflecting a complex nomenclatural history that Schaefer (Reis et al. 2003) and Aquino & Schaefer (2002) helped resolve. The monographic revision of the genus by Aquino & Schaefer (2010), published in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History, provides the current definitive treatment of species limits and the diagnostic characters that distinguish H. inexspectatum from its congeners.

The genus Hypoptopoma Günther, 1868 belongs to subfamily Hypoptopomatinae within Loricariidae. Armbruster (2004) placed it in the 'hypoptopomatine + neoplecostomatine' clade. Molecular systematics by Cramer et al. (2008) confirmed the subfamily as broadly monophyletic.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 3 in standard length (SL) — at the larger end for the genus. The body plan is classic Hypoptopoma: a wide, strongly depressed head with eyes placed laterally on the sides (not the top) of the head, a concave snout profile, a stocky armoured trunk, and a relatively normal — not greatly elongated — tail. This last feature distinguishes Hypoptopoma from the stick catfishes (Acestridium) and Otocinclus in gestalt.

The diagnostic character used by Aquino & Schaefer (2010) to distinguish H. inexspectatum from all other congeners concerns the arrangement of odontodes on the snout margin, the rostral plate, and the first and second infraorbitals: in this species, the dorsal and ventral odontode series along the rostral margin are separated by an odontode-free gap approximately as wide as the base of an individual odontode, and both series are arranged in regular rows rather than irregularly scattered — a pattern unique within the genus. Vertebral count is 25.

Ground colour is typically brown to tan with a variable pattern of spots or reticulations on the flanks and dorsal surface. The ventral surface is pale. The pectoral girdle is robust, with well-developed pectoral spines. No adipose fin is present. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; breeding males may develop fine interopercular odontodes, and females preparing to spawn become noticeably distended in the abdomen. The species is faculative air-breathers — a trait of the genus, likely useful in the oxygen-variable floodplain and macrophyte-bed habitats it frequents.

Habitat

Hypoptopoma inexspectatum occupies the Paraná and Paraguay river drainages across Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil (including the southern Pantanal and Mato Grosso do Sul), and Paraguay. Notably, FishBase records no occurrences in the upper Paraná upstream of the former Salto das Sete Quedas (now the Itaipu reservoir), indicating the species did not naturally penetrate the upper Paraná headwaters. This is the only species in the genus distributed outside the Amazon basin.

In the Pantanal — where the most detailed field studies have been conducted — the species is consistently associated with beds of floating and submerged aquatic macrophytes in the margins of larger rivers and in shallow floodplain lakes. Individuals cling to plant stems and leaf undersides, grazing the periphytic biofilm. The species is also found in slow to moderately flowing main river channels. Temperature range in the Pantanal varies from approximately 64 °F in winter (June–August) to 86 °F in summer; water chemistry is generally circumneutral (pH 6.5–7.5) and moderately soft, reflecting the sedimentary geology of the La Plata lowlands — very different from the acidic blackwater habitats of most Amazonian Hypoptopomatinae.

In the southern Pantanal, the seasonal flood pulse drives the reproductive schedule of H. inexspectatum (see Breeding), linking the species tightly to the hydrological cycle of this vast floodplain.

Feeding

Hypoptopoma inexspectatum is an algivore and periphyton grazer. In the wild it rasps algae, diatoms, and associated biofilm from the surfaces of aquatic macrophyte stems and leaves using the ventral sucker mouth. Its preference for macrophyte-associated feeding surfaces — rather than rocky substrate or wood — reflects the ecology of its La Plata lowland habitat, where rocks are absent and floating vegetation is the dominant hard surface.

The species has been described as an 'epiphytic grazer', and stomach contents from field specimens likely include green algae (particularly filamentous forms attached to macrophytes), diatoms, detrital particles, and incidental microinvertebrates. In captivity the species accepts algae wafers, spirulina discs, and blanched vegetables (cucumber, courgette) readily, as well as naturally growing algae on tank glass and mature decorations. It does not require wood in the diet, unlike xylophagous plecos.

The association with macrophyte beds also exposes it to a different food resource than wood-associated species — aquatic plants support thick epiphytic communities, and the species exploits these effectively. Maintaining planted or heavily decorated tanks with good biofilm production is the key to long-term dietary success in captivity.

Mating

A study of reproductive biology conducted in the southern Pantanal (SciELO/Brazilian Journal of Biology, 2021) found no significant difference in sex ratio between male and female H. inexspectatum sampled across two years. Both sexes show positive allometric length–weight relationships. These findings suggest a broadly synchronised reproductive population structure consistent with seasonal, flood-pulse-driven breeding.

Courtship details for H. inexspectatum are not documented in the published literature, and captive breeding reports are absent from the PlanetCatfish database. By analogy with the better-studied Otocinclus (subfamily Hypoptopomatinae), courtship likely involves the male chasing and nudging the female, and spawning appears to be a scatter event without cave or concealed site requirements. The Pantanal study identified the main reproductive period as January to February — coinciding with the peak flood period — suggesting that rising water levels, expanding macrophyte beds, and changing temperature or photoperiod are the proximate cues.

First maturation was reached at 1.5 in SL in females and 2 in SL in males, indicating females mature somewhat earlier in life history terms, as is common in small loricariids.

Breeding

The reproductive biology of H. inexspectatum in the southern Pantanal was described in detail by a Brazilian research team working on the Upper Paraguay basin (Braz. J. Biol. 81(2), 2021). A total of 538 individuals were sampled and analysed over two years (February 2009 – January 2011). The reproductive season concentrates in January–February, tracking the Pantanal's summer flood peak. The spawning strategy is classified as 'total spawning' (a single seasonal spawning event per female per year, releasing all ripe oocytes at once) rather than fractional or multiple-batch spawning.

Absolute fecundity averages 177.4 oocytes (SD ±127.1) per female, with relative fecundity of approximately 3.1 oocytes per milligram of body mass. Fecundity is positively correlated with standard length (Spearman r = 0.43), meaning larger females produce more eggs. This moderate fecundity is typical for small armoured catfishes.

In captivity, no documented breeding records exist. Given the species' flood-pulse reproductive schedule and macrophyte-bed habitat, aquarists wishing to encourage spawning would likely need to simulate seasonal environmental cues: a cooling period (64–72 °F for several weeks), followed by warming and raising the water level, combined with an abundance of live or robust artificial plants to serve as spawning substrate. The adhesive eggs of related species are typically deposited on flat, smooth surfaces such as plant leaves or glass, with no parental care beyond fertilisation.

In the aquarium

Hypoptopoma inexspectatum is occasionally available through specialist importers and is more cold-tolerant than most loricariids, making it a practical choice for subtropical or unheated setups in mild-climate rooms. PlanetCatfish lists a temperature range of 64–79 °F, and the Pantanal data confirm seasonal tolerance down to around 64 °F, though sustained temperatures below 64 °F are inadvisable. The species is therefore unsuitable for tropical community tanks kept at 82–86 °F.

Water chemistry should reflect the circumneutral, moderately soft conditions of the La Plata lowlands: pH 6.5–7.5, general hardness under 15 °dH. Unlike Amazonian blackwater specialists, this species does not require acidic or ultra-soft conditions, which broadens its accessibility to hobbyists without specialist water-treatment setups.

A well-planted tank of at least 15 US gal is appropriate for a pair or small group. Dense vegetation — Java fern, Sagittaria, Vallisneria, floating plants — provides both grazing surface and cover. The species is peaceful toward other fish and typically cryptic, spending much of its time pressed against plant stems. Occasional incidental aggression between males in cramped conditions has been reported but is generally minor.

Diet in captivity presents few difficulties: the species readily accepts sinking algae wafers, spirulina flakes, and blanched vegetables. Good biological filtration and regular partial water changes (25% weekly) are standard requirements. At present no captive breeding has been documented, limiting availability to wild-caught imports.

Conservation

Hypoptopoma inexspectatum was assessed by the IUCN Red List in 2020 and classified as Least Concern. The species has a broad distribution across four countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay) within the Paraná–Paraguay system, and the Pantanal research confirms it is locally common and frequently sampled in suitable macrophyte-bed habitats.

The La Plata system is under significant and increasing pressure, however. The Pantanal — the world's largest tropical wetland — faces threats from agricultural expansion (particularly soybean cultivation in the surrounding uplands), water diversion for irrigation, and climate-driven changes in flood-pulse timing. Loss or degradation of macrophyte beds would directly reduce carrying capacity for a species so tightly associated with that microhabitat. In the Argentine and Brazilian Paraná, hydroelectric development has fragmented the river and altered flow regimes.

H. inexspectatum has no significant ornamental fishery. Its modest appearance — brown, unpatternned, without an L-number — means it generates little commercial demand. Any trade specimens are incidental to broader Loricariidae collections. The absence of captive breeding means hobbyists depend entirely on wild-caught specimens, but given low demand, collection pressure is negligible. The longer-term conservation outlook depends on the preservation of intact floodplain habitats across the La Plata basin.
