The largest member of its genus, Loricariichthys anus reaches nearly half a metre in standard length and commands the rivers and floodplain lakes of the La Plata system from Buenos Aires north into Uruguay and southern Brazil. Its reproductive strategy is as arresting as its size: at breeding time the male develops a massively swollen lower lip — a purpose-built brooding pad — onto which the entire egg clutch is fixed and carried through incubation.

Taxonomy & naming

Loricariichthys anus was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1835, published in the Reptiles section of Alcide d'Orbigny's Voyage dans l'Amérique méridionale — Plate 6, figure 1 illustrates the type specimen. The original combination was Loricaria anus; the species has also appeared in the literature as Loricarichthys anus (a misspelling treated as a synonym). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Loricariichthys anus as the valid name.

The type locality is the Río de la Plata near Buenos Aires, Argentina — an unusually well-documented provenance for a nineteenth-century description, reflecting d'Orbigny's careful fieldwork during his 1826–1833 South American expedition. This places the type squarely in the temperate southern end of the species' range.

The genus Loricariichthys Bleeker, 1862, combines the Latin lorica (breastplate or cuirass, referring to the bony scute armour) with the Greek ichthys (fish). The species epithet anus derives from the Latin anus, meaning 'ring' or 'circular opening'; the precise morphological feature to which Valenciennes applied it is not elaborated in the original description, but it is assumed to refer to an anatomical detail of the type specimen noted at the time of description.

Within Loricariidae, the genus belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptail catfishes — a diverse group of depressed-bodied loricariids united by their elongated body form, partially naked ventral surface, and, in Loricariichthys specifically, the unique labial brooding reproductive mode.

Morphology

Loricariichthys anus is the largest species in the genus, reaching a maximum standard length of 18 in SL — a scale that sets it apart from most other Loricariinae encountered in the hobby or in general surveys. Like all members of the subfamily, it is strongly dorsoventrally flattened, with a broad armoured head, a tapered body, and an elongated caudal peduncle. The dorsal surface is covered entirely in overlapping bony scutes; the abdomen is unplated and fleshy, as is characteristic of Loricariinae.

The mouth is ventral and surrounded by expanded, fleshy lips — prominent in all individuals but most dramatically developed in breeding males. The snout is moderately produced. Colouration in life includes pale brownish or greyish tones on the dorsal surface, often with irregular darker mottling or banding on the flanks and head. Published photographs from Laguna de Arnaud and related localities (PlanetCatfish; 19 images on file) show the live coloration and body proportions clearly, including close-up views of the distinctive mouth structure.

The most extreme dimorphic feature in this species is the lower lip of the breeding male. Outside the breeding season the lower lip is relatively normal in proportion; as the reproductive period approaches, the male's lower lip hypertrophies dramatically, becoming thick, spongy, warty in texture, and substantially enlarged — forming the specialised brooding pad that gives this genus its common name 'Long-lipped Whiptail'. Females retain a comparatively slender, unmodified lower lip throughout the year, making lip morphology the most reliable field character for sex determination.

Habitat

Loricariichthys anus is distributed across the La Plata basin — one of South America's great river systems — encompassing the lower Paraná River, the lower Uruguay River and its tributary Río Negro, and coastal drainages of Buenos Aires province including the Salado River and rivers entering Samborombon Bay. Southern Brazil and Uruguay are included within the confirmed range. The type locality at the Río de la Plata near Buenos Aires marks the southern margin of the distribution.

FishBase characterises the species as potamodromous — undertaking freshwater migrations — a life history trait with implications for populations in rivers intersected by dams and other barriers. The La Plata system's lower reaches are broad, slow-moving, and highly productive; associated floodplain lakes such as Laguna de Arnaud (where PlanetCatfish spotters have recorded the species) provide important habitat.

The La Plata system occupies a warm-temperate to subtropical climate zone. Water temperatures in the lower Paraná and Uruguay rivers and their floodplain lakes range from approximately 57 °F in winter (June–August in the Southern Hemisphere) to approximately 79–82 °F at summer peak (December–February). This thermal regime is substantially cooler than the Amazonian habitat of most loricariids and is a critical consideration in captivity. Water chemistry in La Plata tributaries, particularly toward the lower basin, tends toward moderate hardness and neutral to slightly alkaline pH (7.0–8.0), reflecting the geology of the surrounding plains and the contribution of Ca/Mg-rich runoff from agricultural land.

Microhabitat is likely soft-bottomed — sandy or muddy substrates of river margins, backwaters, and floodplain lakes — where the demersal, bottom-hugging body form is well suited. The species is associated with slow to still water rather than swift rocky runs.

Feeding

Loricariichthys anus is a detritivore and omnivore, as is general for the genus. The ventral mouth and broad, flexible lips are adapted for grazing soft substrates, drawing in a mixture of fine sediment, organic detritus, benthic algae, periphyton, and small invertebrates. Documented food categories for Loricariichthys species include detritus and sediments, microalgae and filamentous algae, microcrustaceans, fungal matter, plant fragments, and larval aquatic insects.

In the La Plata system, the lower river floodplain is highly productive, with abundant organic input from surrounding agricultural and riparian zones. The species is accordingly adapted to opportunistic exploitation of whatever organic material is available at the bottom — a strategy well suited to the variable, seasonally flooded river margins and lakes it inhabits.

At 18 in SL, a large adult L. anus represents a substantial biomass and would consume correspondingly large amounts of substrate material. In captivity, sinking foods appropriate to a large detritivorous loricariid — high-quality algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and supplementary invertebrate foods — would be the baseline diet.

Mating

The mating biology of Loricariichthys anus is centred on the male's extraordinary lower lip transformation. As the breeding season approaches — likely triggered by seasonal temperature rise in the La Plata system following winter — the male's lower lip undergoes pronounced hypertrophy. The tissue thickens, expands, and takes on a spongy, often warty surface texture. This labial pad becomes the brooding structure to which the spawned egg mass is attached.

Courtship has been observed and described in Argentine scientific literature for this species specifically. The male, with his enlarged lip conspicuous, establishes a position on the substrate and interacts with ripe females. After the female deposits her eggs, the male manoeuvres them onto the brooding lip surface, where they adhere and are secured for the duration of incubation. The male then carries the clutch while continuing normal bottom-foraging activity, holding his head in a slightly raised posture that keeps the egg mass clear of the substrate and in contact with oxygenated water.

This labial brooding mode is unique among loricariids to the genus Loricariichthys and is considered one of the most morphologically specialised parental care strategies in the family. Outside the breeding period, the male's lip reduces in hypertrophy, though sexually mature males typically retain some residual lip enlargement relative to females.

Breeding

Once the egg mass is secured to the male's lower lip, incubation proceeds entirely under paternal care. The male carries the clutch continuously, and the rhythmic passage of water across the lip surface — enhanced by the male's periodic movement — provides the oxygenation the eggs require. Infertile or dead eggs are removed by the male.

No captive breeding report for L. anus is documented on PlanetCatfish. The species has not entered the hobby in any volume, and records of maintained specimens are limited to scientific collections and field spotters (4 PlanetCatfish spotters, primarily from Laguna de Arnaud and related sites in the La Plata zone).

The potamodromous life history raises the possibility that successful reproduction in natural populations may depend on seasonal movements — perhaps to spawning grounds reached by migration — which would complicate any captive breeding programme for this species. Water temperature seasonality in the La Plata system (with a genuine winter cold period) is likely a relevant cue for reproductive cycling.

Clutch size and precise incubation period are not documented for this species in available sources. Given the large body size relative to other Loricariichthys, clutches might be expected to be larger than those of smaller congeners, but this remains speculative without specific data.

In the aquarium

Loricariichthys anus is not a species in the hobby trade. No keeper records exist on PlanetCatfish, and the species is known to aquarists primarily through scientific literature and field photography rather than through maintained specimens. Its large maximum size (18 in SL), temperate thermal requirements, and potamodromous life history all present significant practical challenges.

For a specialist institution or very advanced keeper, the thermal requirements are the first constraint: unlike the vast majority of loricariids, which are tropical, L. anus requires a pronounced seasonal temperature cycle — coolish winters (57–64 °F) and warm summers (75–82 °F) — to mirror the La Plata climate and maintain the fish in good physiological condition. A chiller or unheated room-temperature system with seasonal adjustment would be necessary in most localities.

The tank footprint for an adult approaching 18 in SL would need to be very large — a minimum 59–78.5 in tank length is a reasonable baseline. Water chemistry should be moderate-hard and near-neutral to slightly alkaline, consistent with the La Plata system chemistry: pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness. A soft sandy substrate with organic detritus accumulation is appropriate.

Given the potamodromous tendency, some debate exists in the loricariid literature about whether river-migratory loricariines can be maintained long-term in static aquarium conditions. At a minimum, strong current zones and substantial tank volume would help minimise migratory frustration.

Conservation

Loricariichthys anus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 21 November 2020. The listing reflects a wide distribution across the La Plata system and the absence of documented rapid population decline at the time of assessment.

The La Plata basin — particularly the Paraná and Uruguay rivers — is among the most heavily altered river systems in South America. Extensive damming (notably on the upper and middle Paraná), agricultural runoff and pesticide use across the watershed, channelisation, and urbanisation have collectively modified the lower basin habitat over the past century. The Itaipú and Yacyretá dams, while upstream of the core range of this species, have substantially altered flood-pulse dynamics and sediment delivery that structure floodplain lake habitats downstream.

The potamodromous life history of L. anus is a specific vulnerability: dam barriers may impede seasonal migrations that are part of the species' reproductive or foraging biology, potentially depressing recruitment over time. This concern is noted in the IUCN assessment context, but no population data indicating a declining trend were available to support uplisting.

Coastal drainages of Buenos Aires province where the species also occurs (Salado River, Samborombon Bay catchment) are heavily modified by agriculture and cattle ranching. Continued monitoring of populations in these peripheral systems would help clarify whether any localised declines are occurring beneath the broad LC assessment.
