Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus albopunctatus was described by Charles Tate Regan in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (1907, part 4, page 797, plate 49, figure 1; published 1908) under the original combination Plecostomus albopunctatus. The type locality is the Rio Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) confirms the valid current combination as Hypostomus albopunctatus (Regan, 1908); the original genus Plecostomus is now a synonym of Hypostomus.
The species accumulated a significant number of provisional names during the twentieth century. Hypostomus niger (Marini, Nichols & LaMonte, 1933), described from south-eastern Brazil (holotype AMNH 12245, reported not found in 2019), was treated as valid for decades before being reduced to a synonym of H. albopunctatus by Zawadzki et al. in 2019 (a paper cited in CoF ref. 37170). This synonymy substantially broadened the known distribution and morphological range attributed to the species.
Within Hypostominae, H. albopunctatus falls in the tribe Hypostomini as understood by Armbruster (2004). The Garavello, Britski and Zawadzki (2012) study of Hypostomus from the Rio Iguaçu (Neotropical Ichthyology 10(2): 263–283) provides the current morphological diagnosis: H. albopunctatus is distinguished from all congeners except H. heraldoi by the pelvic-fin unbranched ray being equal to or longer than the pectoral-fin unbranched ray, and further differs from H. heraldoi by bearing pale (not dark) dots on both body and fins. The name Hypostomus lexi is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Hypostomus albopunctatus is a medium-to-large pleco: FishBase records a maximum of 15.5 in SL (with a published weight of 991 g, both from reference 114987), placing it solidly in the mid-range of a genus where adults span from 10 to more than 23.5 in. PlanetCatfish reports the species at approximately 10.5 in SL, likely reflecting a typical adult size rather than the true maximum.
The body is elongated (PlanetCatfish body-shape classification), covered in the standard loricariid armour of bony scute rows. Ground colour is brown, overlaid with a scatter of pale, roughly circular to oval dots distributed across the body and fins — the albopunctatus ('white-spotted') pattern. The dots are visually most conspicuous on the dorsal surface, dorsal fin, and caudal fin. Overall the pattern produces a mid-brown fish with a constellation of cream to whitish spots, variable in density but consistent in form across the species' range.
Fin formula: dorsal II,7 (2 spines, 7 soft rays); anal 6 soft rays. The diagnostic pelvic-fin unbranched ray length — equal to or exceeding the pectoral-fin unbranched ray — is a meristic character best verified with a ruler in hand rather than by eye.
The ventral mouth is the typical Hypostomus sucker-disc. Sexual dimorphism is modest but present: breeding males in the genus develop arrays of interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles), and a well-conditioned female is noticeably broader across the mid-body when gravid. Genital papilla shape follows the standard loricariid pattern.
Habitat
Hypostomus albopunctatus occupies the Río Paraná–Paraguay drainage basin including the Rio Iguaçu — one of the most extensive river systems in South America, spanning parts of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. FishBase places it broadly in the 'Rio Paraná–Paraguay basin including rio Iguaçu'; PlanetCatfish's distribution data specify La Plata, Paraná (upper Paraná), Paranapanema, Tibagi, Pitangui, and Verde (Pitangui) sub-basins. Weber et al. (1992) identified specimens from the middle Paraguayan Paraná basin by morphology, extending the range to Paraguay.
This is a temperate-subtropical to tropical system. The Paraná and its tributaries have a broad seasonal thermal range: summer temperatures (December–February) in the middle-lower Paraná reach 79–86 °F, while winter low-water periods can cool upper tributaries to 57–64 °F in extreme southern reaches. The species thus has a demonstrated tolerance for cooler conditions relative to most other loricariids, which are predominantly Amazonian. Water chemistry in the upper Paraná basin is typically moderate hardness (100–200 µS/cm) and near-neutral pH (6.8–7.5).
Rio Iguaçu specimens from the Iguazu Falls area — a biogeographically isolated tributary with pronounced endemic diversity — have been photographed (PlanetCatfish image ID 792), confirming the species' presence in this iconic but ecologically fragmented sub-basin. Microhabitat is rocky and cobbled riffle and pool habitat, with the fish foraging on algae and periphyton across a range of current velocities.
Feeding
Hypostomus albopunctatus is a periphyton grazer and opportunistic benthic omnivore — the generalised feeding strategy that characterises most Hypostomus species. The ventral oral disc and multicuspid teeth are well suited to scraping algae, diatoms, and attached organic matter from rocks, gravel, wood, and other hard substrates. Like other Hypostomus, the species also ingests detritus and fine organic particles as a by-product of benthic foraging.
The genus Hypostomus as a whole is a facultative air-breather, confirmed by FishBase reference 126274; H. albopunctatus is included in this genus-level characterisation. The ability to supplement aquatic respiration with atmospheric oxygen via a highly vascularised stomach wall confers resilience in warm, slow, or hypoxic waters — conditions periodically encountered in the middle-lower Paraná floodplain.
In captivity, H. albopunctatus accepts the standard large-pleco diet without difficulty: sinking algae and spirulina wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, broccoli, sweet potato), and occasional meaty supplement in the form of sinking carnivore pellets or frozen bloodworm. Driftwood as an enrichment substrate is appreciated; the species will rasp softened wood surfaces but is not a dedicated xylophage. It should be offered a varied diet with the majority of calories from plant-based foods.
Mating
Courtship and mating in H. albopunctatus have not been formally documented in the scientific literature, and PlanetCatfish records no captive breeding reports for the species. The following is extrapolated from the well-studied reproductive biology of Hypostomus plecostomus and related species in which burrow-spawning has been observed.
In Hypostomus species for which reproductive biology has been studied (notably in South American river-fisheries contexts), males select and guard nest burrows excavated in earthen banks during seasonal low-water periods. Males are territorial around these sites, using their robust pectoral spines in lateral displays and occasional direct contact with rival males. Females are attracted to the burrow, assessed, and if accepted, ushered into the nest cavity for spawning.
In captive settings, pair conditioning involves raising the temperature slightly (within the species' tolerance), increasing the protein fraction of the diet, and performing regular large water changes to simulate seasonal inflow. Whether the species will excavate burrows under captive conditions is unknown, though providing a large, packed-sand or clay-soil substrate section in a deep tank has induced spawning in some large Hypostomus in South American public aquarium collections.
Breeding
No captive breeding reports exist for H. albopunctatus in the accessible English-language or hobbyist literature. PlanetCatfish confirms this absence. In South American countries within its range — particularly Brazil and Argentina — there may be aquaculture interest in H. albopunctatus as a food fish (the large Hypostomus species of the Paraná basin are consumed locally under the name 'cascudo'), but published hatchery or ornamental breeding protocols are not available.
Based on studied Hypostomus reproductive biology, breeding follows the loricariid burrow pattern: the male excavates or occupies a tunnel in an earthen bank or equivalent substrate, spawning produces an adhesive clutch of orange to amber eggs, and the male provides exclusive parental care — fanning the eggs and guarding the nest against intrusion until the fry are free-swimming and have largely absorbed the yolk sac.
For the hobbyist setting, successful spawning would demand a very large tank (400+ litres), a suitable substrate for burrow construction or ready-made artificial burrows (PVC pipe embedded in a clay substrate), and properly conditioned adult fish. The temperate dimension of the species' range suggests it may be more tolerant of lower water temperatures than Amazonian plecos, which could be an advantage or complication depending on the keeper's setup.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus albopunctatus remains a rarity in the ornamental fish trade under its own name. It appears occasionally in batches of 'common pleco' shipped from Brazil or Paraguay, misidentified at export, but specific importation is not documented. PlanetCatfish lists six 'spotter' records (in-the-wild sightings by hobbyists) but no registered keepers, indicating that the species is encountered by aquarium-visiting ichthyologists but not widely maintained.
For aquarists who acquire correctly identified specimens, care parameters should reflect the Paraná basin origin: temperatures 68–81 °F (with a willingness to let the tank cool in winter to 64 °F for temperate-range individuals), pH 6.8–7.6, moderate hardness (GH 5–15°dH, conductivity 100–200 µS/cm). This broader thermal window is an advantage compared with strictly Amazonian plecos and makes H. albopunctatus potentially suitable for unheated setups in warm-temperate climates.
Adult size of up to 15.5 in SL demands substantial tank volume — a minimum of 105 US gal for a single adult, larger if multiple plecos are present. Robust external filtration is essential to manage the significant waste output of a large benthic catfish. Driftwood, smooth rounded rocks, and cave-like hiding spaces are valued by the fish and reduce stress. Tankmates should be of similar size and compatible temperament; the species is generally peaceful except in defence of a chosen cave site, where it can be surprisingly assertive toward intruders.
Diet is vegetable-biased: algae wafers, blanched courgette, cucumber, and leafy greens form the staple, supplemented with occasional protein. The species is not a wood-eater but will rasp decaying driftwood for the associated biofilm.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus albopunctatus as Least Concern on 26 October 2020, reflecting a wide distribution across the Paraná–Paraguay basin and the absence of evidence for significant range-wide population decline. The assessment is consistent with the species' demonstrated tolerance of a range of habitats and its occupancy of one of South America's most intensively studied and commercially fished river systems.
Despite the Least Concern status, individual populations within the range face the full suite of pressures typical of large South American rivers: river channelisation and navigation improvements that reduce natural habitat heterogeneity; pollution from agricultural run-off (nutrients, herbicides, pesticides) and urban effluent; water abstraction for irrigation; and reservoir construction, particularly on the Rio Iguaçu, where extensive damming has fragmented the historically isolated Iguaçu fish fauna. H. albopunctatus from the Iguaçu sub-basin — a biogeographically distinct population — may merit separate conservation attention given the high endemism of that system.
The species is taken as bycatch in artisanal fisheries and is occasionally consumed locally. It is not a target of significant ornamental collection. Populations appear naturally stable in undisturbed habitats, and the broad distribution across multiple countries and river systems provides resilience against localised events. Monitoring of Iguaçu populations in the context of ongoing hydroelectric development in that basin would be a prudent conservation measure.
