Hypostomus angipinnatus is one of the least-documented members of a genus containing well over 150 species. Described from a single collection over a century ago and never substantively revisited, it is known only from a brief original account and carries a Data Deficient assessment from the IUCN — a candid acknowledgement that nothing reliable can be said about its current status or population.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus angipinnatus was described by Leege in 1922 in Jenaische Zeitschrift für Naturwissenschaft (volume 58, pages 152; illustrated on plates 9 and 10). The type locality is given as Mato Grosso State, Brazil, though FishBase flags the assignment to the La Plata / Paraguay basin drainage with a question mark, suggesting some uncertainty about the provenance of the type material. The original combination was Plecostomus angipinnatus; the current valid placement in Hypostomus (Lacépède, 1803) follows standard loricariid revisionary work.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypostomus angipinnatus as a valid species (genus id 553, species id 55062). No synonyms beyond Plecostomus angipinnatus are recorded. No revisionary treatment or subsequent systematic work specifically addressing this taxon has been published in the intervening century, and FishBase explicitly notes 'No later work' in its species remarks — an unusually frank statement that underscores the depth of the data gap.

The genus Hypostomus is the largest in Loricariidae and one of the largest catfish genera overall, encompassing a vast range of body sizes, tooth morphologies, and river systems across South America. Placement of angipinnatus within any species group within the genus cannot be confirmed from the available record.

Morphology

Formal morphological data for H. angipinnatus is extremely limited. The maximum recorded length is 6 in standard length (SL), based on the axial length of the type material (FishBase reference 36817). FishBase explicitly notes that this figure is 'based on axial length' — a measurement convention sometimes used in early twentieth-century descriptions that may not correspond precisely to modern SL measurements — so the size should be regarded as approximate.

The original 1922 description in Jenaische Zeitschrift für Naturwissenschaft included illustrations across two plates, suggesting some morphological detail was documented, but that primary literature has not been independently summarised in accessible secondary sources. No coloration notes, meristic counts, or osteological data are available in secondary databases reviewed here. The species is placed in subfamily Hypostominae on the basis of its generic assignment; beyond that, detailed morphological characterisation cannot be reliably provided from cached sources.

Habitat

The type locality is listed as Mato Grosso State, Brazil, with a tentative association with the La Plata drainage (Paraguay basin), though this assignment is queried in FishBase. If correct, the Paraguay basin comprises a vast lowland river system draining parts of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina, characterised by warm, seasonally flooded habitats with highly variable water chemistry depending on sub-drainage and season.

No field observations, water parameter records, or microhabitat data specific to H. angipinnatus are available in any source reviewed here. General Hypostomus ecology — benthic, demersal, associated with substrates ranging from sand to rocky stream beds, often cryptic and nocturnal — applies at family and genus level but cannot be assigned specifically to this taxon without field data.

Feeding

No feeding data specific to H. angipinnatus has been published or recorded in secondary sources. Members of Hypostomus are broadly algivorous and detritivorous, using the ventral suckermouth to rasp algae, biofilm, and organic detritus from hard substrates. Some species in the genus are more herbivorous, others show a stronger detritivore tendency, and a few have dietary specialisations; without meristic or gut-content data for angipinnatus, no specific dietary characterisation is possible.

Data sparse.

Mating

No mating observations or courtship behaviour data for H. angipinnatus are recorded in any source reviewed here. PlanetCatfish, which aggregates hobbyist breeding reports for hundreds of loricariid species, carries no records for this taxon. The reproductive biology of the species remains entirely undocumented.

Data sparse.

Breeding

No breeding records — from the wild or from captivity — are available for H. angipinnatus. The species has apparently never been collected for or maintained in the ornamental trade at any documented scale, and no aquarium reports appear in the hobbyist literature.

Data sparse.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus angipinnatus has no recorded presence in the aquarium hobby. It carries no common name, no L-number or aquarium trade designation, and no husbandry notes appear in any accessible source. PlanetCatfish records a species entry last updated in 2010, with a placeholder creation date, reflecting the absence of any hobbyist encounter with this fish.

Given the uncertainty around even its type locality and the complete absence of collected specimens in contemporary surveys, practical aquarium guidance cannot be offered in good conscience. Any husbandry notes would be speculative extrapolation from other Hypostomus species and are not provided here.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus angipinnatus as Data Deficient (DD) on 7 November 2018, with the assessment conducted by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The DD status reflects a genuine absence of population data, range data, and ecological information — not a finding of low threat. It is formally distinct from Least Concern: the species may be rare, threatened, or extirpated for all that is currently known.

The species has not been collected or documented in the field in any survey accessible to review. Given that the sole record dates to 1922 with a queried type locality, the basic question of whether H. angipinnatus is a valid, distinct taxon or a misidentified specimen of another species remains open. Future revisionary work on the Hypostomus fauna of the Paraguay basin would be required to resolve its status.
