Taxonomy & naming
Lamontichthys parakana was described by de Carvalho Paixão and Toledo-Piza in 2009, in the paper 'Systematics of Lamontichthys' in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 7, number 4, pages 519–568). The authority is confirmed against the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). The species is known only from its type locality, the lower rio Tocantins below the Tucurui Dam, in Pará State, Brazil.
The genus Lamontichthys belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae, the whiptail catfishes — elongate, slender-bodied loricariids with a long, depressed caudal peduncle. Within the genus, L. parakana is distinguished by a combination of characters described by its authors: an anal-fin origin placed more anteriorly than in congeners (anterior to the vertical through the distal tip of the last dorsal-fin ray), a naked tip to the anterior snout (a feature it shares with L. avacanoeiro and L. stibaros), long-cusped teeth, and — in specimens larger than 4 in standard length — a broad head (101.3–106.1% of head length) and a large orbital diameter (16.6–17.3% of head length). The epithet 'parakana' refers to the Parakanã, an Indigenous people of the lower rio Tocantins region where the holotype was collected.
Morphology
Lamontichthys parakana reaches a maximum recorded length of 5 in standard length. The body is elongate, in keeping with the whiptail (Loricariinae) form. Diagnostic features set out in the original description include a more anteriorly positioned anal-fin origin, a naked anterior snout tip, long-cusped teeth, and — in larger individuals (over 4 in SL) — a notably broad head (about 101–106% of head length) and large orbital diameter (about 17% of head length). No published account of live coloration is available in the consulted sources.
Habitat
The species is a freshwater, demersal, tropical fish known only from the lower rio Tocantins, immediately downstream of the Tucurui Dam, in Pará State, Brazil. This stretch of the Tocantins is a large lowland river whose flow and sediment regime have been heavily modified by the upstream impoundment. Beyond this river context, no specific published physical and chemical water data (temperature, pH, hardness) are available in the consulted sources for this species.
Feeding
No feeding study has been published for Lamontichthys parakana. The long-cusped teeth noted in its description are consistent with the rasping, biofilm- and detritus-grazing habits typical of loricariid catfishes, but no documented diet is available, and specifics should not be assumed.

Lamontichthys parakana has no published aquarium husbandry data and is not established in the hobby. Whiptail catfishes of the subfamily Loricariinae are generally regarded as sensitive fishes requiring clean, well-oxygenated water, but no keeping experience specific to this species has been documented, and its restricted, dam-affected range makes it a poor candidate for collection.
Conservation
Lamontichthys parakana was assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, with the assessment dated 18 May 2022. Data Deficient means there is not enough information to evaluate its extinction risk directly. The concern, however, is plain from its distribution: the species is known from a single locality immediately downstream of the Tucurui Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric projects in Amazonia. Dams of this scale alter downstream flow, temperature, sediment transport, and connectivity, and a fish recorded from only one site in such a modified reach is inherently vulnerable to further habitat change. Clarifying its true range and population status through additional survey work is a prerequisite for any firmer conservation evaluation.
