Taxonomy & naming
Lamontichthys stibaros was described by Isbrücker and Nijssen in 1978 in Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde (volume 48, number 1, pages 57–80), the paper that simultaneously erected the genus Lamontichthys and transferred several species from earlier nominal genera. The type locality is Ecuador, Province of Pastaza, in the Rio Bobonaza at Chicherota, at approximately 2°25'S, 76°38'W, at an altitude of roughly 853–919 ft above sea level in the upper Amazon basin.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid name Lamontichthys stibaros Isbrücker & Nijssen, 1978, within the subfamily Loricariinae. A subsequent systematic revision of Lamontichthys by de Carvalho Paixão and Toledo-Piza confirmed the species' placement and clarified its distribution and morphological boundaries, documenting specimens from Ecuador and Peru and noting sympatry with the related L. filamentosus in several Peruvian drainages including the Rio Santiago, Rio Marañón, and Rio Ucayali systems.
The genus Lamontichthys was named in honour of Francesca Raimonde La Monte (1895–1982), an ichthyologist at the American Museum of Natural History who made substantial contributions to Neotropical fish systematics. The species epithet stibaros derives from the Greek word stibaros, meaning robust or sturdy, apparently alluding to the relatively stocky proportions of this species within the genus.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum of approximately 7 in (7 in) SL in the largest examined specimens, a size consistent with its role as a mid-sized to moderately large whiptail catfish. The body is strongly depressed — flattened dorsoventrally in the characteristic Loricariinae manner — and covered in keeled bony scutes. The lateral mid-ventral plate count of 19–20 falls within the range typical for the genus.
The feature most immediately striking in Lamontichthys is the pectoral-fin formula: unlike all other Loricariinae genera, Lamontichthys possesses seven branched pectoral-fin rays rather than the six found everywhere else in the subfamily. This, combined with the wide space between the parietosupraoccipital and the dorsal-fin origin and three pre-dorsal plates with polygonal (rather than stellate) shapes, defines the genus. The first branched dorsal-fin ray is elongated, measuring 29.7–36.8 % SL — a conspicuous filamentous extension lending the fish its sail-like dorsal profile.
The head is relatively narrow: anterior head width measures 89.1–101.4 % of head length in specimens larger than 3 in SL. The snout tip lacks the plating found on the anterior snout in some congeners, serving as an additional diagnostic character separating L. stibaros from related species. Teeth are slender with long cusps, contrasting with the shorter cusps of several congeners. Sexual dimorphism has not been formally documented for this species, though elongated fin filaments in male Lamontichthys — a pattern seen broadly in Loricariinae — are expected based on genus-level biology.
Habitat
Lamontichthys stibaros inhabits the upper Amazon basin of Ecuador and Peru, where it is known from the Rio Bobonaza drainage (Pastaza province, Ecuador) at foothills elevations of roughly 853–919 ft asl and from several Peruvian tributaries including the Rio Santiago, Rio Marañón, and Rio Ucayali systems. The Rio Bobonaza is an Andean piedmont river draining the eastern slope of the Ecuadorian Andes before joining the Rio Pastaza; at the type locality it flows through warm, low-gradient forested terrain.
FishBase categorises the species as a freshwater, demersal, high-altitude-affiliated species. No field measurements of water chemistry at the type locality are available in accessible sources, but Andean piedmont rivers in this region typically carry warm water (72–82 °F), moderate current, and substrates ranging from sand to cobble and boulder. Clear-water conditions with relatively low conductivity and mildly acidic to circumneutral pH are consistent with the known hydrology of Pastaza province streams. The species is also recorded in sympatry with L. filamentosus in several Peruvian drainages, indicating some tolerance for the range of conditions found across these Andean-foothill and lowland-Amazon habitats.
Feeding
No direct dietary data are available for L. stibaros. Across Loricariinae, the ventrally positioned suctorial mouth and fine, multi-cusped teeth of Lamontichthys point to grazing on biofilm, periphyton, algae, and fine detritus deposited on hard substrate surfaces — the standard foraging mode for the subfamily. A trophic level of approximately 2.5 (inferred from genus) places it firmly in the algivore-detritivore category. In clear, moderate-to-fast current Andean rivers, productive periphyton mats develop on boulders and cobble, providing the dietary base for these specialised grazers. No stomach content analyses for this species have been published.
Mating
No observational data on mating behaviour in L. stibaros have been published. Loricariinae as a group share a consistent reproductive strategy with clear sexual signalling: males develop odontodes — small, keratinised spines — on the snout, cheeks, and occasionally along fin rays during the breeding season, used in male competition and potentially in female assessment. The elongated fin rays documented in Lamontichthys more broadly may also function as sexual displays, and males are expected to be the actively territorial and parental sex as in other Loricariinae. No captive spawning accounts exist for this species.
Breeding
Breeding biology of L. stibaros is entirely undocumented both in the wild and in captivity. The species is essentially absent from the ornamental trade and has not been maintained in public or private aquarium collections in any documented capacity. Inference from the subfamily is the only available guide: Loricariinae consistently practise paternal brooding, in which the male guards an adhesive egg clutch deposited on a cleaned hard surface and fans the mass to prevent hypoxia and fungal colonisation until hatching. The elongated first dorsal-fin ray in Lamontichthys may play a role in courtship or territorial display, but this is speculative.
In the aquarium
Lamontichthys stibaros is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. No established trade population exists, and no documented captive maintenance accounts have been published. The species' native habitat — moderate-current, clear, well-oxygenated Andean foothill rivers — suggests it would require strong filtration with significant water movement, cool-to-warm conditions consistent with Andean piedmont temperatures, and a spacious tank appropriate for a fish reaching approximately 6.5 in SL. Hard substrates (smooth river cobble, flat slate) that replicate natural grazing surfaces would be appropriate, supplemented with the algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and periphyton biofilm typical of loricariid care. All care details here are inferred from subfamily biology and habitat data rather than captive experience.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Lamontichthys stibaros as Least Concern (LC) in 2014, based on a reasonably broad distribution across two countries and the absence of evidence for significant population decline. The species occurs across Ecuadorian and Peruvian upper Amazon drainages and, while never common in collections, is not known to be restricted to a single locality or drainage in the manner of some highly endemic Andean loricariids.
The broader upper Amazon and Andean foothill region faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and the expansion of road networks, which drive sedimentation of clear-water streams — a particular threat to periphyton-dependent grazers that require clean, hard substrates. Hydroelectric development in Ecuadorian and Peruvian Andean tributaries is also increasing. Neither L. stibaros specifically nor Lamontichthys more broadly has been assessed in the context of these regional threats beyond the genus-level Least Concern determination.
