Taxonomy & naming
Lasiancistrus guacharote was described by Valenciennes in 1840 in the monumental Histoire naturelle des poissons (volume 15, page 508), one of the earliest comprehensive treatments of South American catfishes. The original type locality is recorded as 'Puerto Rico', but this is a well-established error in the literature; the actual provenance is the Lake Maracaibo basin of Venezuela, as confirmed by subsequent workers. The new combination Lasiancistrus guacharote was established by Eigenmann in 1910 (page 409), and a syntype was described by Regan in 1904 (page 238).
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Lasiancistrus guacharote as the valid name. Several synonyms have accumulated over the long taxonomic history of this species: Ancistrus mystacinus, Hypostomus guacharote, Lasiancistrus maracaiboensis, and Lasiancistrus mystacinus all refer to this taxon. Of these, Lasiancistrus maracaiboensis is the name most frequently encountered in the recent aquarium literature and importation records; keepers searching under that name should note that it is a junior synonym redirecting to L. guacharote. The most recent comprehensive treatment of Lasiancistrus was provided by Armbruster in 2005 in Neotropical Ichthyology (3(4): 549–569).
Within Lasiancistrus, L. guacharote is distinguished from all congeners except L. schomburgkii by the presence of a single platelet or a small patch of platelets ventromedially from the insertion of the pectoral-fin spine and nowhere else on the ventral surface. It is further separated from L. schomburgkii by the presence of black spots in the dorsal fin (versus no spots or white spots in schomburgkii) and by the presence of black bands in the paired and caudal fins (versus absent bands in schomburgkii).
Morphology
Adults of Lasiancistrus guacharote reach approximately 4.5 in total length (TL). The body is elongated, as is characteristic of the genus, and covered in the bony scute armour shared by all loricariids. The colouration is distinctive: the dorsal fin carries black spots, and the paired fins and caudal fin show black banding — a pattern that, combined with the overall brownish to olive ground colour, provides useful identification cues distinguishing this species from its Lake Maracaibo congeners.
The genus Lasiancistrus is set apart from most other loricariids by a suite of shared characters: whisker-like odontodes on the cheeks (the 'lasios' feature referenced in the name), evertible cheek odontodes, three rows of plates on the caudal peduncle, a modified bar-shaped opercle, and a caudal fin that is slightly emarginate to weakly forked with the lower lobe longer than the upper. These features collectively give adult Lasiancistrus a slightly dishevelled, bristled appearance at the head.
Sexual dimorphism in L. guacharote follows the genus pattern: nuptial males develop a nearly square snout profile (versus the more rounded snout of females and juveniles) and grow whisker-like odontodes at the anterolateral corner of the snout. Additionally, breeding males develop longer tentacle-like extensions on the pectoral-fin spine that exceed the length of the associated odontodes, a feature not present in females. These dimorphic characters require mature, well-conditioned fish to be clearly expressed.
Habitat
Lasiancistrus guacharote is endemic to the Lake Maracaibo basin, which encompasses the lake itself and its tributary drainages — including the Catatumbo, Zulia, and surrounding river systems — straddling the Venezuela–Colombia border. Lake Maracaibo is one of South America's largest lakes and among the oldest, geologically isolated from the Orinoco system; this isolation has produced a characteristically endemic ichthyofauna.
Collection records from PlanetCatfish include specimens from the Río Peralonso near Cornejo, Colombia, within the Maracaibo catchment. The genus Lasiancistrus is known to be a facultative air-breather (Ref. FishBase 126274), an adaptation associated with seasonally hypoxic or shallow, warm conditions — conditions that can develop in lowland tropical rivers and lake margins during dry seasons. Microhabitat preferences for L. guacharote specifically have not been described in detail in published sources. Given the general loricariid pattern and the genus's modest size, rocky margins, root zones, and submerged debris in moderate current are plausible microhabitats within the basin.
Feeding
Lasiancistrus guacharote is an algivore and biofilm grazer in the tradition of most hypostomine loricariids. The ventral oral disc, with its rasping dentition, is adapted for scraping periphyton — the community of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and associated organic detritus that accumulates on hard substrates in tropical rivers. No gut-content studies specific to this species appear in the published literature.
In aquaria, L. guacharote should be maintained on a diet centred on high-quality sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and blanched vegetables such as courgette, cucumber, and sweet potato. Some biofilm grazing on rocks and wood surfaces will supplement the diet if these are available. As with most loricariids, moderate protein offerings (sinking carnivore wafers, bloodworm on occasion) can be included but should not dominate the diet. The aquarium should be maintained with sufficient surface area and biofilm growth to allow natural grazing behaviour.
Mating
Detailed accounts of courtship behaviour in Lasiancistrus guacharote have not been published. The documented sexual dimorphism — square versus rounded snout, elongated snout odontodes in males, and extended pectoral-fin spine tentacles in nuptial males — implies that mate assessment and male–male competition play meaningful roles in reproductive behaviour.
In related loricariids of comparable size, males typically establish and defend spawning territories around cavity sites, and courting behaviour involves lateral displays and physical positioning. The evertible cheek odontodes characteristic of Lasiancistrus males may also function in both rival deterrence and mate signalling. No aquarium breeding records for L. guacharote are on file in published hobbyist databases; the species is rarely kept in captivity.
Breeding
No confirmed aquarium breeding records exist for Lasiancistrus guacharote. PlanetCatfish records no registered keepers, spotters, or breeding reports for this species, indicating that captive maintenance is extremely uncommon.
By analogy with other loricariids of similar size and subfamily, cave-spawning with paternal brood care is the expected reproductive strategy. A male would defend a narrow cavity, with the female depositing adhesive eggs on interior walls and the male subsequently fanning and guarding the clutch. Any keeper successfully maintaining and breeding this species would be contributing genuinely novel information to what is known of its reproductive biology. Conditioning adults with varied diet, good water quality, and seasonal temperature variation mimicking Lake Maracaibo conditions would be a logical starting point.
In the aquarium
Lasiancistrus guacharote is a rarely encountered species in the hobby, with essentially no established tradition of captive maintenance to draw on for practical guidance. General principles for medium-sized loricariids apply: a tank of at least 25–30 US gal, good filtration, plenty of hiding places in the form of caves, flat stones, and driftwood, and water conditions reflecting the warm, tropical lowland environment of the Lake Maracaibo basin.
The genus Lasiancistrus includes facultative air-breathers, which may be relevant in aquaria with limited surface agitation or during unusually warm periods. Ensuring good surface gas exchange is prudent. Temperature should be maintained in the tropical range, broadly 75–82 °F; pH and hardness data specific to L. guacharote collection sites are not available, but the Maracaibo basin is a lowland tropical system and soft to moderately hard, neutral to slightly acidic water is a reasonable baseline.
The species lacks an L-number and does not appear in the mainstream aquarium trade. Specimens occasionally become available through specialist catfish importers as bycatch in Venezuelan shipments. Keeping it with peaceful community fish — tetras, livebearers, Corydoras — is appropriate. Direct competition with other bottom-dwelling loricariids in a small tank should be avoided.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Lasiancistrus guacharote as Least Concern in 2020. The species is distributed across the Lake Maracaibo basin, a moderately large watershed spanning Venezuela and Colombia, and no significant range contraction or population decline has been documented.
Nevertheless, the Lake Maracaibo basin faces considerable environmental pressure. The lake and its catchment are the centre of Venezuela's oil industry, and hydrocarbon extraction, industrial pollution, and associated habitat degradation represent ongoing concerns for the endemic ichthyofauna. Agricultural runoff, deforestation in tributary watersheds, and introduced species add further pressure. These threats are real but have not at present shifted the IUCN assessment for this species. The aquarium trade takes negligible numbers of L. guacharote given its scarcity in collections.
