Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus maracaiboensis was described by Leonard Peter Schultz in 1944, based on specimens from the Lake Maracaibo drainage, Venezuela. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid name Hypostomus maracaiboensis (Schultz, 1944), placing it within the large and speciose genus Hypostomus — the most diverse genus in the family Loricariidae.

Hypostomus is a sprawling assemblage of suckermouth armoured catfishes within the subfamily Hypostominae, the largest subfamily in Loricariidae. The genus contains well over 100 valid species and has historically been a taxonomic catch-all; ongoing phylogenetic work continues to refine species boundaries and relationships, though H. maracaiboensis has remained a recognised valid species throughout this period.

No L-number designation has been assigned to this species, reflecting its modest presence in the international ornamental trade.

Morphology

Hypostomus maracaiboensis reaches a maximum recorded total length of 11 in (FishBase), placing it in the mid-range of the genus — larger than many popular hobby species yet considerably smaller than the largest Hypostomus and Pterygoplichthys relatives.

The body follows the typical loricariid plan: strongly depressed, covered in interlocking bony scutes arranged in rows along the flanks and abdomen, with the underside partially keeled. Ground coloration is dark brown to olive-grey, overlaid with irregular lighter speckles or spots — a cryptic pattern well-suited to substrates of dark sediment, submerged wood, and algae-covered rock. The ventrally positioned suckermouth is muscular and adapted for rasping periphyton from hard surfaces. The dorsal fin is prominent and triangular, a common feature of Hypostomus.

The species has been noted as a facultative air-breather — a trait shared by several Hypostomus that inhabit seasonally variable environments where dissolved oxygen can drop during low-water periods. Sexual dimorphism is not well documented in the published literature for this species specifically.

Habitat

Hypostomus maracaiboensis is endemic to the Lake Maracaibo basin in northwestern Venezuela — one of the oldest and most geographically isolated lake systems in the Americas. Lake Maracaibo itself, along with inflowing rivers including tributaries connected to the Catatumbo River drainage and the Gulf of Venezuela channel, constitutes the known range of this species.

The lake basin's long isolation has produced a degree of endemic freshwater fauna, and H. maracaiboensis is among its suckermouth representatives. As a demersal species, it occupies the benthos — rocky margins, root tangles, hard substrates bearing algae and biofilm — in waters that are characteristically warm, tropical, and seasonally influenced by rainfall patterns in the surrounding Andean foothills and coastal ranges.

The facultative air-breathing capacity of this species suggests it is adapted to conditions where oxygen availability can be variable — consistent with the littoral and marginal habitats of a large, sometimes stratified tropical lake.

Feeding

Hypostomus maracaiboensis is an algae grazer and biofilm scraper — the feeding guild typical of most Hypostomus. Using its ventrally placed suckermouth, it rasps periphyton, filamentous algae, diatom mats, and associated organic detritus from hard surfaces. FishBase records its diet as algae and organic matter.

In the aquarium, this feeding ecology translates to a predominantly plant-based diet: algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables such as courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and sweet potato are all appropriate. Supplementary protein in small amounts — via sinking pellets, the occasional frozen bloodworm, or similar — can round out the diet, though the species is not a predator and heavy meat-based feeding is unnecessary and potentially harmful long-term.

Providing surfaces on which algae can develop naturally — smooth rocks, broad-leaved plants — also allows for natural grazing behaviour.

Mating

No specific mating observations for Hypostomus maracaiboensis have been formally documented in the scientific literature. Based on its membership in Hypostomus and the general biology of the genus, cave spawning with paternal brooding is the expected reproductive mode — the dominant strategy across Hypostominae.

Hobbyist sources suggest that breeding may be triggered by the onset of the rainy season, when rising water levels and changes in temperature and flow cue reproductive behaviour — a seasonal pattern consistent with other loricariids from rain-influenced South American drainages. These claims have not been independently verified for this species and should be treated as preliminary.

Breeding

Formal breeding records for Hypostomus maracaiboensis in captivity are not available in the published literature. Based on close relatives within Hypostomus, the reproductive mode is expected to be cave spawning, with the male selecting and defending a cavity — a hollow section of driftwood, a natural rock crevice, or a ceramic cave — where eggs are deposited and guarded.

In the genus generally, males fan the clutch with their pectoral and caudal fins to maintain oxygenation, and brood care is predominantly or entirely paternal. Egg and fry development times vary with temperature. The absence of documented captive breeding for this species most likely reflects its limited presence in the ornamental trade rather than any particular reproductive difficulty.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus maracaiboensis grows to approximately 11 in TL and requires a spacious aquarium — a minimum footprint of 120 × 17.5 in (approximately 55 US gal) is appropriate for a single adult, with more volume beneficial given the bioload that comes with a large suckermouth catfish.

Decor should reflect its natural environment: smooth rounded rocks, areas of open substrate for resting, and some driftwood or root tangles for shelter. The species is an algae grazer rather than a wood-eater, so large quantities of driftwood are not essential, though wood provides useful hiding and resting sites. Water should be clean, well-filtered, and moderately oxygenated, consistent with a tropical lake origin: temperature approximately 73–82 °F, pH broadly neutral to slightly acidic or alkaline. Strong filtration is important given the waste output of a large plecostomus.

This species does not carry an L-number and is not common in the hobby; specimens are more likely encountered in specialist collections or from importers dealing in Venezuelan freshwater fauna.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus maracaiboensis as Least Concern, with the assessment completed on 15 January 2021. This status reflects adequate population size and no evidence of severe range-wide decline at the time of assessment.

Nevertheless, the species' restriction to the Lake Maracaibo basin — a geographically closed system — makes it inherently more vulnerable to basin-level pressures than species with broad river drainage distributions. The Maracaibo basin faces significant anthropogenic stress: the lake and its margins are surrounded by one of Venezuela's most heavily developed regions, with petroleum extraction, agricultural runoff, untreated wastewater, and introduced species all documented as threats to the endemic freshwater fauna. Ongoing monitoring of the basin's ichthyofauna is warranted, and the Least Concern status should not be interpreted as absence of concern for the basin's ecological integrity.
