Taxonomy & naming
Lithoxus lithoides was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912 in Memoirs of the Carnegie Museum (volume 5, number 1, page 242, plate 29, figures 1–4), from specimens collected at Amatuk, Guyana. The holotype is FMNH 53557 (ex CM 1527), and a large type series of 181 paratypes is distributed across numerous institutions. The name appeared as a nomen nudum (name only, without description) in Eigenmann 1910 before being formally described. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the valid combination as Lithoxus lithoides Eigenmann 1912, with no synonyms.
The genus Lithoxus was erected to accommodate small, strongly flattened loricariids of the Guiana Shield. The name is from Greek lithos (stone) and oxys (sharp), and the Catalog of Fishes records the genus-level etymology as 'stone + sharp'. The species epithet lithoides is likewise from Greek, meaning 'stone-like' or 'resembling stone', a double reference to the fish's rock-clingling habit and its stone-grey, granular coloration. PlanetCatfish records the etymology as reflecting the armoured body (lorica).
Within Loricariidae, Lithoxus is placed in subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster, 2004; Fisch-Muller in Reis et al. 2003). Fisch-Muller (2003) placed it in the broader Ancistrini tribe alongside many L-number plecos. The genus is a member of the Guiana Shield endemic radiation and comprises several species in the L. boujardi, L. pallidimaculatus, L. planquettei, and L. surinamensis complex in addition to the type species.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 3.5 in standard length (SL) — a modest size that belies the specialisation of the body plan. The most immediately obvious feature is the extreme dorsoventral compression: the body is almost disc-like when viewed from the front, with a very flat ventral surface and a low dorsal profile. This allows the fish to minimise its hydraulic profile in fast current by lying essentially flush against the rock surface.
The oral disc is large, circular, and well-developed — comparatively broader relative to head width than in more generalised hypostomines — maximising suction-cup adhesion to smooth rock faces. PlanetCatfish records the genus as 'externally characterized by a strongly dorsoventrally depressed body, a large round oral disk, and small tooth cups with few teeth.' The teeth are small and bicuspidate, suited to scraping algal biofilm and periphyton from rock surfaces rather than gouging wood or sifting sediment.
Colouration is drab and cryptic: the dorsum is grey-brown to olive, often with small dark spots or a finely mottled pattern that blends with granite and schist boulders. The ventral surface is paler. The pectoral and pelvic fins are broad and laterally extended in classic rheophilic loricariid fashion, functioning as additional adhesion surfaces in combination with the oral disc. There is no recorded sexual dimorphism beyond minor differences in odontode development.
Habitat
The Catalog of Fishes (CoF) places Lithoxus lithoides in the Essequibo and upper Correntyne river basins of Guyana and Suriname — both river systems draining the ancient granite and metamorphic rocks of the Guiana Shield. FishBase lists the distribution as 'Essequibo and upper Correntyne River basins', and PlanetCatfish adds the broader Guyana coastal river complex and the Corentijn system. The type locality, Amatuk, is a site on the Essequibo where classic Guiana Shield granite outcrops meet fast-flowing water.
The species inhabits stony rivulets and rapids, as noted by both Burgess (1989) and FishBase (Lowe-McConnell 1964 field data referenced therein): 'clings to rocks in the rapids'. This is a true rheophilic microhabitat — high current velocity, excellent oxygenation, clean water with low turbidity, and hard submerged rock surfaces covered in algal biofilm. Water temperatures in these upland Guyanese streams are notably cool for a tropical fish: FishBase records the range as 64–72 °F, which is consistently cited by PlanetCatfish as well. This cool range reflects the high-altitude, shaded, forest-canopy-covered streams of the Guiana Shield rather than open lowland rivers.
The species is not known from slow-moving or lentic habitats and would be expected to do poorly in warm, oxygen-depleted water.
Feeding
Lithoxus lithoides is an aufwuchs grazer — it feeds primarily on the algal biofilm, periphyton, and associated diatoms, cyanobacteria, and invertebrate meiofauna that colonise rock surfaces in fast-flowing streams. The large oral disc is pressed directly against the rock surface and the small, bicuspidate teeth scrape material off the substrate. This is consistent with the feeding mode of most rheophilic loricariids occupying fast-water rock habitats.
In captivity, feeding can be challenging: the species requires a clean biofilm-covered surface to graze, and freshly established aquaria with minimal algae growth may not sustain it. Algae wafers and blanched vegetables are offered but may be insufficiently colonised with microorganisms to fully replace wild biofilm. Smooth rocks colonised by green algae are valuable; spirulina wafers placed against rock surfaces are more likely to be utilised than wafers dropped on open substrate. The genus is reported as having facultative air-breathing capability (FishBase, Ref. 126274), which aids survival in reduced-oxygen conditions but is not a feature of its natural rheophilic habitat.
There are no breeding reports on PlanetCatfish and no hobbyist accounts of successful long-term maintenance are widely documented, reflecting that this species is rarely available commercially and remains largely outside the mainstream hobby.
Mating
No detailed account of mating behaviour in Lithoxus lithoides has been published in either the scientific or aquarium literature. PlanetCatfish records no breeding reports and no registered keepers for this species, which indicates it is not yet established in the hobby. The mating system can be inferred with reasonable confidence from phylogenetic position and body form: Hypostominae species in fast-water rheophilic environments typically exhibit cave-spawning with paternal brood care, a pattern seen across many related genera in similar habitats.
In the absence of direct observation, stating more would risk fabrication. What is known is that the sexual dimorphism — if any — has not been described in available literature. The extreme environment this species inhabits (high-current rapids, cool water, rock surfaces) suggests that any breeding behaviour would require similar current and oxygenation conditions to those found in the wild, making aquarium breeding intrinsically challenging. Detailed observations of mating in Lithoxus species remain a gap in the scientific literature.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Lithoxus lithoides has not been documented in the hobby literature as of this writing. PlanetCatfish records no breeding reports, consistent with the species' rarity in the trade and the difficulty of replicating its cool, fast-water environment in captivity. The biological details of its reproductive biology — egg number, incubation period, larval development — remain unpublished.
By analogy with other small hypostomine species from rheophilic habitats, the reproductive strategy is likely to involve a small clutch of moderately large eggs deposited in a rock crevice or under a flat stone, with paternal guarding during incubation. The cool water temperature preferred by the species (64–72 °F) would slow development relative to tropical cave-spawning plecos typically maintained in warmer aquaria.
For aquarists who obtain this species, providing conditions as close as possible to the natural habitat — clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water at 64–72 °F over smooth granite or slate with established biofilm — would be the starting point for any breeding attempt. Until documented breeding is reported and peer-reviewed, all specific breeding parameters must be treated as inference.
In the aquarium
Lithoxus lithoides is a specialist species with highly specific requirements that place it firmly outside the realm of beginners' fish. Its cool preferred temperature range (64–72 °F) means standard tropical aquarium temperatures are too warm; a temperature controller or chiller is likely needed in most homes. This single factor eliminates compatibility with the vast majority of tropical community fish. Suitable tankmates at these temperatures include hillstream loaches (Homaloptera, Gastromyzon), temperate climate fish, and other cool-water rheophiles.
The setup should provide strong current, high surface agitation for oxygenation, and smooth rock surfaces (granite, slate, or similar) that will develop natural algal growth. The tank does not need to be large — a 15–20 US gal aquarium with an adequate powerhead providing 8–10× the tank volume per hour in current would be appropriate for one or two specimens. Substrate can be coarse gravel or smooth pebbles; fine sand is not appropriate for a rock-clinching species.
The fish is rarely available commercially and commands specialist-collector prices when it does appear. Its diet in captivity depends substantially on established biofilm; supplemental algae wafers are useful but should be offered on rock surfaces rather than the tank floor. Long-term maintenance requires patience in establishing a mature, algae-rich tank before the fish is introduced. There are no registered keepers in the PlanetCatfish database, underscoring how infrequently this species is maintained in hobbyist collections.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Lithoxus lithoides as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting a distribution across the Essequibo and Correntyne basins of Guyana and Suriname, with no documented evidence of significant population decline. The Guiana Shield rivers in which it lives remain among the least modified major river systems in South America; deforestation and mining are threats to parts of the region but the Essequibo headwaters retain largely intact forest cover.
Gold mining in Guyana and Suriname is a known threat to freshwater ecosystems in both countries, with mercury contamination and sedimentation from artisanal and small-scale operations affecting water quality and substrate integrity in some drainages. Whether current mining activity reaches the specific habitats occupied by L. lithoides is not precisely documented in available assessments. The species' dependence on clean, rock-surface habitats in fast-flowing streams means it would be particularly vulnerable to sedimentation events that smother biofilm-covered rocks.
Commercial ornamental trade in this species appears minimal to non-existent; it is not a species targeted by major exporters and its demanding care requirements would limit market viability. Conservation status is unlikely to be driven by collection pressure at current levels.
