Taxonomy & naming
Farlowella reticulata was described by Marinus Boeseman in 1971 in Zoologische Verhandelingen (Leiden), number 116, pages 37, plates 7–8. The type locality is Maka Creek, a tributary of the Lawa River, 6 mi south of Stoelmanseiland, within the Marowijne River basin of Suriname. No junior synonyms are currently recognised under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).
The species was reviewed and re-described within the context of a broader Farlowella revision by Retzer and Page (1997), and again treated in the regional inventory of Le Bail et al. (2000) for the freshwater fishes of French Guiana. The genus Farlowella sits within the subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptail and twig catfishes — a derived loricariid clade defined by extreme body elongation, reduced armour flexibility, and strong association with woody and leafy substrates.
The genus name honours Dr. William Gilson Farlow (1844–1919), described in FishBase as an American botanist and physician from Harvard who specialised in algae. The epithet reticulata derives from the Latin reticulatus ('net-like' or 'reticulated'), most likely referring to a pattern element on the body or head, though the species' most prominent markings are the lateral stripes rather than a reticulation.
Morphology
Farlowella reticulata reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 6 in SL (FishBase reference 36389; PlanetCatfish records 6 in SL). The body plan is the characteristic Farlowella architecture: extremely elongate and almost cylindrical, with a prominent rostrum (an extension of the snout well beyond the mouth), a narrow caudal peduncle, and overlapping bony scutes covering most of the body surface.
Ground colouration is brownish, overlaid with two dark lateral stripes running from the rostrum tip, through the eye, and extending toward the caudal base — a pattern that breaks the silhouette of the fish against woody substrate and gives it a strongly twig-like appearance when stationary. The dorsal fin is positioned near the midpoint of the body, typical for the genus. The ventral mouth is small and equipped with fine teeth suited to scraping thin biofilm from smooth surfaces.
Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: males develop small bristle-like odontodes on the sides of the rostrum, particularly prominent in breeding condition. Females tend to be broader-bodied when gravid. The species is described as mimetic — closely resembling brushwood in colour and form (FishBase) — and relies on this resemblance, combined with stillness and a branch-like resting posture, as its primary predator avoidance strategy.
Habitat
Farlowella reticulata is distributed across three adjacent Guiana Shield drainages: the Essequibo basin of Guyana, the Marowijne (Maroni) basin shared between Suriname and French Guiana, and the Oyapock basin on the French Guiana–Brazil border. All three are Guiana Shield rivers with soft, acidic, tea-coloured or clear water — conditions typical of laterite and granite catchments with minimal agricultural input.
FishBase records a pH range of 6.1–6.2 and a temperature range of 77–79 °F for the species, consistent with the warm, slightly acidic clear-water creeks of the coastal Guianas. The species shelters during the day in the anfractuosities (hollow spaces) of submerged logs, emerging more actively during diurnal periods according to field notes, and feeds primarily on periphyton growing on submerged wood and vegetation. FishBase notes inhabitation of shallow creeks with strong current and rocky substrate — swift-flowing, well-oxygenated environments where twig mimicry is most effective against predators in clear water.
Feeding
Farlowella reticulata feeds primarily on periphyton and associated microorganisms — the thin community of algae, bacteria, diatoms, and organic particles that colonises submerged hard surfaces in flowing, well-lit water. FishBase explicitly records this feeding mode, noting periphyton and associated organisms as the dietary base. The small ventral mouth and fine teeth are adapted to scraping these films from smooth bark, submerged wood, rocks, and broad leaves in areas of moderate to strong current.
In aquaria, the diet should replicate this grazing pattern as closely as possible. Established surfaces bearing green or brown algal films are valuable, supplemented with sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based tablets, and blanched vegetable slices (courgette, cucumber, spinach). Foods should be offered after lights-out when Farlowella tend to become more active. High-protein, meaty foods are generally not appropriate for the gut physiology of this predominantly herbivorous grazer.
Mating
No specific breeding reports for Farlowella reticulata appear in the available records. The courtship pattern inferred from the genus involves males developing more prominent rostral odontodes during the reproductive season, which likely function in male competition and in tactile contact with females during pair formation. Males in breeding condition are identifiable by these odontodes and by activity near flat, smooth surfaces — potential spawning sites.
FishBase records that spawning pairs clean the substratum before depositing eggs (reference 35381), suggesting a degree of pre-spawning site preparation. The scale of the egg count recorded — approximately 50,000 eggs (reference 35381) — is anomalously large for a small loricariid and may reflect a data quality issue or species-level misassignment in the original reference; this figure should be treated with caution unless corroborated by independent accounts.
Breeding
Farlowella reticulata is a substrate spawner with paternal egg guarding, following the pattern established across the genus. FishBase references record that spawning pairs clean a flat substratum before depositing adhesive eggs, with the male subsequently guarding the clutch (reference 35381). The male remains with and fans the eggs through incubation, removing infertile or fungused eggs as needed.
No independent aquarium breeding accounts for this species appear in the records consulted. Congeners in similar water conditions (soft, slightly acidic, temperature 75–79 °F) have been bred in aquaria, with broad leaves or smooth wood sections serving as preferred spawning surfaces. Farlowella fry are extremely small and delicate on hatching, requiring microalgae or infusoria as first food; mortality in the early weeks is high even under attentive care. The fish likely benefits from seasonal cues — temperature variation and conditioning on varied plant-based foods — to bring it into breeding condition.
In the aquarium
Farlowella reticulata's soft, slightly acidic water requirements and its native habitat of fast-flowing, clean Guiana Shield creeks translate to fairly exacting aquarium conditions. Water quality must be high: pH 6.1–6.5, temperature 75–79 °F, very soft water, low nitrate, and strong oxygenation. Regular partial water changes are essential. Stagnant or organically loaded water quickly stresses these fish.
The aquarium should offer abundant plant cover and smooth surfaces for grazing: tall background plants, broad-leafed Anubias and Echinodorus, and pieces of driftwood provide resting and feeding sites. The fish spends much of its time motionless, pressed against a surface at a branch-mimicking angle. Good water circulation — achieved with a spray bar or powerhead — is appreciated, since the species inhabits moderate-to-strong current zones in the wild.
Compatible tankmates are limited to small, peaceable species: small tetras, pencilfish, hatchetfish, and Corydoras are routinely recommended. Nippy or fast-moving species (danios, barbs) should be avoided, as should large catfishes and cichlids. No images of F. reticulata in aquaria appear in the PlanetCatfish database, reflecting the species' relative rarity in the trade; hobbyist experience with it is limited compared to more frequently kept congeners.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Farlowella reticulata as Least Concern (LC) in October 2020, the most recent assessment. The evaluation noted that the species' range — spanning the Essequibo, Marowijne/Maroni, and Oyapock basins — falls predominantly within the Guiana Shield, one of the least deforested and most hydrologically intact major freshwater regions in South America. No major threats were identified, and the species' range and population were considered stable at the time of assessment.
The species is not listed on CITES appendices. Although the Guiana Shield enjoys relatively good conservation status compared to Atlantic Forest or Andean drainages, localised threats from gold mining (with associated mercury contamination and sedimentation), small-scale logging, and infrastructure development exist in parts of Suriname and French Guiana. The species is occasionally captured for the ornamental trade, but collection pressure does not appear significant. Continued monitoring of the Guiana Shield drainages remains important for the group as a whole.
