Among the larger twig catfishes, Farlowella rugosa stands out for its distinctive roughened body texture and its distribution across the river networks of the Guiana Shield — Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana — where it inhabits clear, sandy-bottomed forest creeks that few hobbyists will ever encounter in the wild.

Taxonomy & naming

Farlowella rugosa was described by Boeseman in 1971, placing it among the earlier formally named members of a genus that spans much of tropical South America. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts Farlowella rugosa Boeseman, 1971 as a valid species; no synonyms are currently attributed, and GBIF occurrence records corroborate the identity of specimens from the Essequibo and Marowijne basins consistent with the original description.

The genus Farlowella falls within subfamily Loricariinae of the family Loricariidae, the armoured suckermouth catfishes. Loricariinae is a species-rich lineage characterised by extreme body elongation, a flattened ventral surface, and in many members a dramatic rostral extension — the twig catfish body plan. Within this subfamily, Farlowella is the flagship genus of the twig catfish form, distinguishable from the closely related whiptail loricariids (Rineloricaria, Sturisoma) by the pronounced rostrum and the very narrow, pencil-like body.

Boeseman described the species from material collected in Suriname, within the Marowijne (Maroni) drainage, which forms the border between Suriname and French Guiana. Distribution data subsequently confirmed the species also in the Essequibo (Guyana) and Corantijn (Courantyne) river systems.

Morphology

Farlowella rugosa is one of the larger species in its genus, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 8.5 in — making it substantially bigger than several commonly encountered Farlowella in the trade. The body follows the classic twig catfish blueprint: a greatly elongated, near-cylindrical trunk covered in bony scutes, a prominent rostrum extending well ahead of the ventral mouth, and a tail tapering to a slender point.

The species epithet rugosa (Latin: wrinkled or rough) refers to the texture of the scutes, which display a more pronounced roughness or rugosity compared with some congeners. This textural character distinguishes it to some degree in hand, though field identification among Farlowella species requires attention to scute counts, rostrum proportions, and distribution.

Sexual dimorphism in F. rugosa follows the general Farlowella pattern: males develop odontode bristles along the snout — short and restricted to parts of the rostrum during the reproductive season — while females are broader-bodied when gravid. The trophic level recorded on FishBase (2.4 ± 0.2) places the species firmly in the herbivore-detritivore category, consistent with its biofilm-grazing lifestyle.

Habitat

Farlowella rugosa is distributed across three major river basins draining the eastern Guiana Shield: the Essequibo in Guyana, the Marowijne (Maroni) on the Suriname–French Guiana border, and the Corantijn (Courantyne) between Guyana and Suriname. All three are classic Guiana Shield rivers — blackwater to clearwater systems flowing across ancient Precambrian rock, with tea-coloured or clear water, low pH, minimal dissolved minerals, and fine sandy or rocky bottoms.

FishBase records field observations of the species from forest creeks 13–26 ft wide and 1–7 ft deep, with flowing water and sandy substrate. This describes the small tributary habitat typical of Guiana Shield ichthyofaunas: shaded, clear, moderately to well-oxygenated streams running beneath closed canopy forest, with banks fringed by roots, fallen logs, and marginal vegetation that accumulate the biofilm the fish depend on.

The Guiana Shield rivers experience a pronounced seasonal cycle. In the dry season, forest creeks shrink dramatically, concentrating fish and potentially raising water temperature and reducing oxygen; in the wet season, water levels rise and fish can access flooded forest margins. Farlowella rugosa is presumably adapted to these fluctuations, as is characteristic of the regional fauna.

Feeding

Farlowella rugosa feeds as a periphyton and biofilm grazer, applying its ventral, subterminal mouth to submerged surfaces and rasping algae, bacteria, fungi, and fine organic detritus. The elongated rostrum positions the mouth to reach surfaces at narrow angles — along stems, roots, and fine woody debris — that are inaccessible to more conventionally shaped catfishes.

The trophic level of 2.4 reflects the low position in the food web of a primary consumer feeding primarily on plant-derived material and associated microorganisms. In Guiana Shield clear-water streams, periphyton (the community of microalgae, cyanobacteria, and associated heterotrophs that coat submerged surfaces) is often the dominant energy source for benthic consumers, and Farlowella appear well specialised to exploit it.

In captivity, the diet translates to algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables. Broad-leaved aquatic plants and driftwood surfaces that accumulate algae provide supplemental grazing. The fish feeds slowly and deliberately; competition at feeding time from faster species is a practical management concern in a community setting.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour in F. rugosa has not been specifically documented in the literature consulted here. The account below draws on the well-established general Farlowella pattern.

Males in breeding condition are identifiable by the development of short odontode bristles on the snout — Boeseman's original description notes that this character is restricted to parts of the rostrum, in contrast to some congeners where bristles are more extensive. Males become territorial around potential spawning surfaces and may engage in displays or brief contests with rival males. Females approaching spawning condition become visibly wider in body when viewed from above.

Seasonal cues appear important in triggering spawning in twig catfishes. A dry-season simulation — gradual temperature reduction and reduced water volume — followed by cool, soft water changes mimicking the onset of wet season rains has been used to stimulate spawning in related species. The calm, clear-water stream conditions of the Guiana Shield origin suggest the fish are intolerant of turbulence or impaired water clarity during reproduction.

Breeding

Farlowella are open spawners: eggs are deposited in an adhesive cluster on a flat, clean surface — aquarium glass, a broad plant leaf, a smooth flat stone — rather than inside a cave or burrow. The male assumes sole parental responsibility after spawning, positioning himself beside or over the clutch and fanning it continuously with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation and prevent fungal colonisation.

Incubation among Farlowella typically takes around a week at temperatures in the mid-twenties Celsius, with fry emerging as miniature, fully formed twig catfishes. Juveniles begin grazing biofilm almost immediately and accept the same fine vegetable and algae-based foods as adults. Early growth is slow.

Successful captive breeding of F. rugosa specifically has not been confirmed in the sources reviewed. Given its large adult size relative to most hobby Farlowella, a correspondingly larger, calm aquarium would be needed to condition and spawn this species.

In the aquarium

Farlowella rugosa is a large and demanding twig catfish that requires careful matching of conditions to its Guiana Shield origin. At 8.5 in SL — potentially approaching 10 in total length — it needs a spacious aquarium: a tank of at least 47 in in length is advisable for a single adult, more for a pair or group. Long, shallow setups suit the species better than tall tanks.

Water chemistry should reflect the clear, soft, acidic rivers of the Guiana Shield: temperature around 73–81 °F, pH 5.5–7.0, and low hardness. Guiana Shield blackwater and clearwater drainages are characterised by very low mineral content; hard, alkaline water is poorly tolerated. Pristine water quality is non-negotiable — Farlowella are sensitive to organic pollution and nitrate accumulation. Frequent partial water changes with dechlorinated, pH-adjusted water are essential.

Furnishings should include driftwood (both for resting and grazing), broad-leaved plants such as Amazon swords or large Anubias, and subdued lighting to reduce stress. Current should be gentle. The fish is slow, deliberate, and cryptic; tankmates must be peaceful and non-competitive. Small tetras and other calm Guiana Shield residents are appropriate companions. Fin-nipping species are incompatible.

Farlowella rugosa is an uncommon import. It appears occasionally in specialist Guiana Shield fish consignments and is rarely available as tank-raised stock.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Farlowella rugosa as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting a distribution across three river basins in Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana with no evidence of significant population decline. The Guiana Shield is one of the world's least disturbed major river systems; the rivers inhabited by F. rugosa retain substantial intact forest cover and relatively low levels of industrial or agricultural development compared with Amazonian systems to the south and west.

That said, the Guiana Shield is not without pressure. Artisanal and industrial gold mining has severely degraded sections of the Essequibo and Marowijne drainages in particular, with mercury contamination and sedimentation affecting stream communities. Deforestation along riparian corridors removes both the shade and the leaf and wood inputs that sustain the biofilm communities on which Farlowella depend.

The species' Least Concern status is currently well-supported, but the ongoing expansion of extractive industries in the Guiana Shield warrants continued monitoring. Clear-water tributary fish fauna is acutely sensitive to turbidity and chemical pollution.
