Hypostomus regani is a large, spotted armoured catfish from the river systems of southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina — a representative of the species-rich Hypostomus plecostomus group that forms the backbone of the genus across the La Plata drainage. Capable of reaching 16 in in standard length, it is built for strong-current environments: a broad, muscular body sheathed in heavy scutes, a powerful ventral disc, and the trademark pale-on-dark spot pattern that earns it the hobbyist name 'Giant White Spot Pleco'.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus regani was originally described as Plecostomus regani by Hermann von Ihering in 1905 in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (series 7, vol. 15, no. 90, p. 558), based on material from the Rio Piracicaba, São Paulo State, Brazil — a tributary of the upper Paraná system. The species was redescribed and a lectotype designated by Reis et al. (1990, p. 745), who stabilised the concept and provided updated morphometric data. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) currently recognises Hypostomus regani (Ihering, 1905) as a valid species; the combination Plecostomus regani Ihering, 1905, is treated as a synonym.

The species is honoured for the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan (1878–1943), an authority on South American fishes who worked at the Natural History Museum, London. Within the genus Hypostomus — the largest genus in Loricariidae with well over 100 valid species — H. regani belongs to the H. plecostomus species group of the subfamily Hypostominae, characterised by a robust body, moderately elevated dorsal fin, and the absence of the elaborate teeth modifications that distinguish the cochliodon group. Armbruster's (2004) phylogenetic analysis of Loricariidae placed Hypostomus in a paraphyletic grade relative to more derived hypostomines, confirming that the genus requires further revision.

A molecular phylogeographic study of H. regani across three populations in the upper Paraná basin (Alves et al. 2013, published in PubMed) examined karyotype variation, finding 2n = 54 or 66 chromosomes depending on population, suggesting cryptic diversity within the species concept — a pattern consistent with the genus-level taxonomic complexity of Hypostomus.

Morphology

Hypostomus regani is a large, robust loricariid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 16 in SL and maximum weight of 955 g; PlanetCatfish lists 12 in SL as a typical aquarium/museum record. The body is moderately depressed and heavily armoured with overlapping bony scutes in the typical Hypostomus arrangement. The dorsal fin is moderately elevated with the standard 7–8 rays of the genus (distinguishing it from the high-dorsal Pterygoplichthys, which has 10 or more rays).

The colour pattern is a pale cream to white ground overlaid with a dense covering of dark brown to black roundish spots of variable size — the pattern responsible for the 'white spot' trade name. In juveniles the spots are particularly crisp and contrast strongly; in large adults the pale background may darken or the spots may merge. The belly and ventral surfaces are pale.

The mouth is ventrally positioned, broadly semicircular, and armed with numerous thin, bifid teeth adapted for scraping algae and biofilm from hard surfaces. Unlike the Cochliodon group of Hypostomus, which have spoon-shaped teeth for wood-scraping, H. regani teeth are adapted for algae/detritus grazing.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle in this species: males may develop odontodes on the pectoral spines and around the snout margins, and the genital papilla differs between sexes, but the difference is far less marked than in Ancistrus. Females of reproductive condition are noticeably broader in the posterior body when gravid.

Habitat

Hypostomus regani is distributed through the Paraná, Paraguay, and Uruguay river basins in southern South America, with confirmed records from Brazil (São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Paraná states), Paraguay, and northern Argentina (Formosa, Misiones; IUCN 2020). The type locality, the Rio Piracicaba, is a tributary of the upper Paraná, draining the Brazilian Cerrado / Atlantic Forest transition zone.

Within this range, H. regani inhabits rivers and streams of varied size, generally preferring areas with firm substrate — rocky runs, gravel bars, and submerged boulders where current is moderate to strong. The Paraná system is characterised by seasonal variation in flow and water quality: during the southern summer (November–March) rainfall elevates water levels and dilutes conductivity; dry-season conditions (May–September) bring lower, clearer, warmer water. Field data indicate a preference for temperatures in the range 72–77 °F (FishBase), with pH values from 6.0 to 7.0 and soft to moderately hard water (up to 15 dH).

The species is benthic and demersal, clinging to hard surfaces with its ventral disc in fast-flowing sections. Like all Hypostomus, it is a facultative air-breather, capable of supplementing gill respiration by gulping air at the surface during periods of low dissolved oxygen — an adaptation of great value in seasonally warm, hypoxic floodplain waters.

Feeding

Hypostomus regani is primarily an algivore and detritivore. The IUCN assessment (Salvador 2023) cites Hahn et al. (2004) in noting that H. regani feeds on debris, sediments, and insect larvae in the Paraná floodplain system. This is consistent with the general feeding strategy of the Hypostomus plecostomus group: the scraping teeth rasp periphytic algae, biofilm, and fine detritus from hard substrate surfaces; insect larvae, particularly chironomid midge larvae, are ingested incidentally.

The species is not a true xylophage (wood-eater) in the manner of Panaque or Cochliodon-group Hypostomus; while it will rasp the surface of submerged wood for biofilm, it does not digest cellulose and should not be labelled a wood-feeding species.

In the aquarium, feeding is uncomplicated. A diet based on sinking algae wafers, spirulina discs, and a range of blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, sweet potato, leafy greens) meets the bulk of its nutritional requirements. Bottom-feeding pellets and sinking community foods are accepted. This species will forage across the substrate for organic particles throughout the night; during daylight it typically remains motionless under shelter, pressed against a flat surface with its disc.

Mating

Reproductive biology of Hypostomus regani in the wild has been studied to a limited extent. Nomura (1985) documented that females first reach maturation size at approximately 7.5 in and that a female of 16.5 in SL produced approximately 2,400 oocytes. This confirms that H. regani is a relatively late-maturing species with moderate fecundity relative to its large body size.

Like other large Hypostomus, the species is believed to excavate or occupy cavities in river banks and submerged substrates for spawning, consistent with the breeding strategy observed across the genus. Males of reproductively active Hypostomus develop odontodes on the rostrum and pectoral spines that are thought to play a role in male–male competition and possibly in mate assessment by females.

Field spawning in the Paraná basin is seasonal, likely timed to the warm-water, high-flow period of the southern summer, when food availability peaks and nesting sites in inundated river banks are accessible. No detailed field studies of spawning behaviour for H. regani specifically have been published.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Hypostomus regani has not been documented in the aquarium literature or on PlanetCatfish's breeding report database. This is typical of the larger, slower-maturing Hypostomus species: they require very large aquaria or pond conditions to reach sexual maturity (at 7.5 in or more, i.e., several years of growth), and the excavated bank burrows used for spawning in the wild are almost impossible to replicate in standard aquaria.

In nature, Hypostomus species that have been observed breeding are typically documented as excavating tunnels or appropriating crevices in firm substrate, with the male guarding the bright orange-coloured egg mass. FishBase notes for Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus (a close relative in the same subfamily) that males may exhibit parental care; a similar strategy is inferred for H. regani given the close phylogenetic relationship and the Nomura (1985) data on oocyte production suggesting batch rather than continuous spawning.

For aquarists interested in breeding large Hypostomus, the prerequisites are a very large system (minimum 130–210 US gal for a pair), a substrate area where burrowing or bank-excavation can be mimicked, seasonal temperature cycles, and patient conditioning over several years. Success has occasionally been achieved with Hypostomus species in large garden ponds in subtropical climates.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus regani is an impressive but demanding aquarium species. Its maximum size of 16 in SL — corresponding to a total length (with caudal fin) of roughly 19–19.5 in — means it belongs in only the largest home aquaria: a minimum of 120 US gal for a single specimen, and substantially larger if multiple adults are to be housed. Despite its size, the species is a common enough export from southern Brazil and Paraguay and is occasionally available from specialist loricariid importers.

Water parameters should reflect the subtropical Paraná basin conditions: temperature 72–79 °F (the species tolerates temperatures down to around 64 °F in winter in its range), pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. It is one of the more cold-tolerant large plecos available to hobbyists — an asset for temperate-country keepers. Robust filtration is essential; a fish of this size produces considerable biological waste.

The tank should provide multiple large flat rocks, slate caves, and large-bore ceramic tubes for shelter and resting sites. The species is nocturnal and spends daylight clamped against surfaces or wedged under cover. Driftwood is accepted but not essential. Robust, low-light plants can coexist with this species if anchored firmly.

Intraspecific aggression is low outside the breeding season; H. regani is not generally an aggressive fish toward other species unless space is very limited. Large, robust community fishes — large cichlids, other big catfishes — are appropriate tankmates, but the pleco should not be housed with species likely to nip its fins or compete for its caves. This species is not suitable for the typical hobbyist community tank; it is a specimen fish for large systems.

Conservation

Hypostomus regani was assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List in 2020 (Salvador 2023), based on a wide distribution across the Paraná and Paraguay river basins in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay and no identified population-level threats. The assessment notes that population trend is unknown and that information on ecology remains limited.

The Paraná–Paraguay river system, while one of the largest in South America, faces significant anthropogenic pressures. Hydroelectric development is particularly acute: the construction of Itaipu dam (completed 1982) drastically altered the upper Paraná, inundating rapids, permanently submerging rocky riffle habitats used by loricariids, and homogenising water temperatures. Further dams have been proposed or built on the upper Paraguay, threatening the Pantanal floodplain downstream. Deforestation throughout the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biomes has accelerated sedimentation in tributaries, degrading the clear-water rocky habitats where armoured catfishes concentrate.

At present H. regani is not considered at risk, but the loss of rocky rapids and riffle habitat — the microhabitat where large Hypostomus are most abundant — from dam construction and sediment loading is a long-term concern for the species group across the Paraná basin. The IUCN assessment explicitly calls for better population data as a research priority.
